Amazon FBM calculator UK: which costs should you enter?

Build a UK FBM calculation with the correct Amazon category, selling plan, packaging, labour and tax treatment before comparing your own fulfilment with FBA.

In short

  • An Amazon FBM calculator for the UK needs at least 6 cost inputs: product purchasing, category fees, selling plan, transport, packing and returns. Enter the costs of your actual operation in Amazon’s own-fulfilment comparison, and check VAT separately before treating the result as profit.
  • Use the UK marketplace and the actual fee category. A generic 15% assumption can miss reduced rates or category minimums.
  • Amazon’s Revenue Calculator compares FBA with your own fulfilment, but its estimates exclude taxes and VAT unless stated otherwise.
  • Keep a dated evidence note for each input so you can explain why an apparent margin changed after the first shipment.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

The difficult part of an FBM calculation is usually the information you put into it. A calculator can subtract accurately while leaving out the time spent picking a variant, the carton used for a bundle or the cost of handling a returned product. Start with a real SKU and its normal packed form. Work through the costs you can evidence, then mark the items still unknown. A result with unresolved inputs is a provisional estimate, even if the tool displays a precise profit percentage.

Can Amazon’s own calculator compare FBM with FBA?

Yes. Amazon’s UK fee-estimation guide explains how to compare FBA with your own fulfilment in the Revenue Calculator. You can use a current or future product. The same guide describes an Estimated fee per unit sold column in Manage All Inventory for existing products. These are useful ways to inspect Amazon’s estimate. They do not remove the need to enter the costs of the operation you intend to run outside an Amazon warehouse.

Select the product carefully when several listings look similar. Check the identifier, pack quantity and category against the offer you will sell. A single accessory and a multipack can have different packed dimensions and purchasing costs. A comparison based on the wrong listing may look plausible because both products have the same name. Save the relevant identifier beside the calculation so that a later change in packaging, quantity or offer can be traced to the exact product you evaluated.

Keep both alternatives at the same level of detail. If your FBM column includes storage and return handling, investigate those cost layers for the FBA alternative too. If you include only a carrier label under FBM, the comparison describes postage rather than the full operation. The calculator’s role is to make your assumptions visible. Decide what work each fulfilment route performs before treating a difference in the displayed total as a saving available to your business.

Should you allocate plan fees by units or parcels?

The UK pricing page, checked on 14 October 2026, distinguishes the Individual per-unit plan from the Professional monthly plan. Copy the current amount applicable to your account into your calculation, with its tax treatment. For a monthly fee, use your actual sold units for that period when reviewing cost per unit. For a forecast, label the sales assumption separately. A plan cost spread over an optimistic forecast is not the cost already achieved by your business.

Cost componentRelevant denominatorRecord to use
Individual selling-plan feeSold unitsApplicable current plan and unit count
Professional selling-plan feeMonthly sold units for a unit-cost reviewInvoice and the corresponding sales period
Packing and transportActual parcels and the work per orderShipment record and fulfilment agreement
Use matching records before comparing cost per unit with cost per parcel.

The financial crossover is narrower than the choice of account features. Check whether the tools needed for your operation are available under the plan you select. Also distinguish units from orders: a customer buying multiple units can create one parcel while the Individual fee applies per unit. Do not divide the monthly plan cost by parcels merely because your dispatch report counts packages. Choose a consistent denominator for the product margin, then maintain a separate measure for the cost of handling an order.

Why can the fee category change your result?

Category names matter more than a familiar headline percentage. Amazon’s 2026 UK update lists an 8% rate for the qualifying lower price band in Home Products and 5% for the qualifying lower band in Pet Clothing and Food. Read the full price condition in the current schedule before applying either rate. A kitchen product is not automatically in Home Products, and a pet accessory is not automatically in Pet Clothing and Food. Verify the classification and qualifying price of your actual ASIN before changing a spreadsheet.

Amazon calculates the referral fee using the total sales price, including buyer-paid shipping and gift wrapping, or the applicable minimum where that is greater. Moving part of the customer’s payment into a delivery charge therefore does not automatically remove it from the fee base. Use the total that belongs to the actual transaction. If a calculator asks for item price and shipping separately, check how it combines those fields before interpreting the result. A low-looking item price can otherwise hide a higher fee-bearing total.

Keep the category rate, price condition and date in your working note. If a discount changes the customer payment, refresh the estimate instead of carrying forward an old absolute referral fee. If the product’s classification is uncertain, show that uncertainty explicitly and resolve it before relying on the margin. You do not need a complicated model for this: the product identifier, confirmed category and applicable fee rule are enough to explain which assumption should change when the offer changes.

What belongs in your own fulfilment-cost input?

InputEvidence to useMistake to avoid
Outbound transportQuote for the closed package and destinationUsing an untracked or unsuitable service as a substitute
Packing workYour own recorded work or agreed provider feeTreating your time as free because you pack at home
PackagingSupplier cost for the materials actually consumedUsing the unit’s bare dimensions
Stock movementActual inbound transport and storage agreementIgnoring the first shipment to an external packer
ReturnsThe return route and inspection arrangementAssuming a delivered parcel cannot come back
A checklist for your own inputs, rather than additional fees charged by Amazon.

Measure the finished parcel, including protective material. Then check the quote for the intended delivery destination and service. A neatly packed single item can become a different parcel when the buyer orders a bundle. Keep that bundle as a separate scenario. Do the same when a product needs a box rather than its original sleeve. The extra material can affect both the packing cost and the carrier service that is available, so changing only one input may understate the effect.

Use the work you actually intend to delegate. Picking a sealed product, checking several variants and assembling a kit are different jobs. An external provider’s basic fee may cover one of them while charging separately for another. Ask what the agreed work includes, then put that scope beside the amount. For your own labour, record the task before assigning a cost. An unsupported hourly estimate can make the model look complete while leaving you unable to explain what happens on a busy dispatch day.

How does an AirPost example reveal a missing input?

For a euro-denominated AirPost comparison, the constants checked on 14 October 2026 give €0.85 for the platform component and €2.25 as the recommended small-parcel packing payment. Together that is €3.10 before transport and materials. For a regular parcel the recommended packing payment is €3.00, bringing those components to €3.85. The difference is €0.75. These are recommendations and separate cost components, not a complete delivered-order quote.

The useful lesson is the missing work, rather than a claimed UK saving. If you enter only the carrier label into your own-fulfilment column, you leave out the packing payment and platform component shown in this example. AirPost’s amounts above are in euros. Keep them in a separate comparison until you have a dated currency conversion and the actual quote for your route. Do not add a euro amount directly to a sterling plan fee or display the resulting number as a UK profit.

AirPost describes stock held by local senders who pack and hand over webshop orders. Its copy also describes Shopify order import. That does not establish an Amazon order connection or Prime eligibility. If you are evaluating delegated work for Amazon, verify how the order, label and tracking would move through your actual process. You can still use the documented price components to ask a better cost question without assuming an integration that has not been confirmed for your business.

Does the calculator already account for VAT and returns?

The Revenue Calculator help says its estimates do not include taxes or VAT unless stated. Check the treatment of each field in the tool you use and compare it with your actual invoices and accounting position. Do not infer a tax-inclusive profit from a number simply labelled net proceeds. Keep sales taxes, taxes on costs and Amazon charges identifiable so that your accountant can examine the calculation without reconstructing your assumptions from a final percentage.

Returns need their own scenario rather than an invented universal return rate. First map what happens to one returned order: return transport, receipt, inspection, refund processing and the product’s remaining value. Use your actual costs where known and leave unknown items marked. Then compare a delivered sale with that returned-sale scenario. Once you have your own evidence about return frequency, you can estimate a period’s cost. Before then, showing the financial effect of a return is more honest than assuming a neat percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Amazon FBM calculator for UK sellers?

Amazon’s Revenue Calculator can compare FBA with your own fulfilment. Select the UK product and supply the costs of the operation you intend to run yourself or through a provider.

Does FBM mean there are no Amazon selling fees?

No. Your plan and referral fees still apply. FBM changes who performs fulfilment; it does not turn the marketplace transaction into a fee-free sale.

Should I use 15% for every UK referral fee?

Use the confirmed category and price condition for your product. The current schedule has reduced rates and minimums, so a generic percentage can misstate the estimate.

Does the Revenue Calculator include VAT?

Its help says taxes and VAT are excluded unless stated. Check each input and your accounting treatment before treating the displayed estimate as final profit.

Can I compare a single unit with a multipack?

Calculate each packed form separately. Unit purchasing costs, per-unit fees, packing work and the final parcel can change in different ways when several items share one order.

To inspect the physical workflow, use your first order without a warehouse. You can evaluate ordinary outsourced packing through local fulfilment in Europe once you know which cost inputs your comparison needs.
