In short
- Build your US Amazon FBM shipping template around the actual dispatch address, SKU handling and carrier service. Amazon requires at least 90% on-time delivery, and its February 28, 2026 enforcement change can deactivate the listings contributing most to a shortfall.
- A shipping charge and a delivery promise are separate decisions. Free shipping still needs a service that can meet the order deadline.
- Standard-shipping OTDR protection requires the specific Amazon automation and protected-label combination; a third-party ground label does not establish it.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A template can look sensible while describing a shipping operation you no longer run. You moved stock, changed the pickup time or started packing a second product in a larger box. The customer still sees the old promise. Before shortening transit times or offering free shipping, trace a representative SKU from its physical shelf to the carrier and compare that route with the settings attached to the offer. The useful outcome is a promise you can repeat, including on the days when packing takes longer.
Which settings belong together before you edit a template?
Amazon’s US FBM overview describes settings and templates for handling time, transit time and capacity. Start with a record of what applies to the individual offer. The inventory address answers where the parcel starts. Handling describes work before dispatch. The service determines what happens after handover. Capacity describes how much work the operation can accept. Changing one field does not resolve a mismatch in another.
| Audit question | Record to compare | Decision before editing |
|---|---|---|
| Where is this SKU actually stocked? | Physical stock address and offer assignment | Use the origin that will dispatch the order |
| What work happens after purchase? | Picking, inspection, customization and packing | Give preparation its own realistic handling allowance |
| When can the carrier accept it? | Pickup schedule or drop-off acceptance cutoff | Leave time for a real handover |
| What will this service deliver? | Destination-specific service estimate and order promise | Choose a route that fits the displayed deadline |
| What does the buyer pay? | Template charge and your full shipping cost | Fund any shipping subsidy from your own margin |
Keep variants distinguishable. A ready-to-ship item and a personalized version can share a product family while needing different preparation. If an offer inherits a default you intended for a different SKU, the error reaches customers before it reaches your packing bench. Record the offer identifier and the assigned template together. That makes a later complaint traceable to the promise that was actually active, rather than to a template you changed afterward.
How does the 2026 OTDR change affect your listings?
Amazon’s official US announcement retains the 90% OTDR minimum. From February 28, 2026, it targets listings with the greatest impact on the decline instead of automatically deactivating every seller-fulfilled listing. Significantly poor or repeated performance can still lead to all seller-fulfilled listings being deactivated. The announcement gives an Account Health appeal route for affected offers.
Use that distinction to investigate by SKU, origin and service. A shop-wide average may hide a particular package type that repeatedly travels more slowly. Look at the affected orders before rewriting every template. Ask whether the delay began before carrier acceptance, during transit or in the final delivery event. A longer transit setting cannot recover hours lost because an order stayed unseen until the next morning. A faster label cannot make unavailable stock appear.
Keep a copy of the notification and its affected offers. Reinstatement and operational repair are separate pieces of work: restoring an offer does not establish that its next parcel will meet the promise. Document the specific setting or physical step you corrected. Then watch new orders on that route. Use Amazon’s actual reporting cohort for the compliance calculation rather than treating a handpicked set of successful deliveries as evidence that the account has recovered.
Does Shipping Settings Automation protect every label?
The same US notice specifies three conditions for standard-shipping OTDR protection: Shipping Settings Automation, Automated Handling Time and an OTDR-protected label bought through Amazon Buy Shipping or Veeqo. For Prime and premium shipping, it instead specifies on-time shipping, Shipping Settings Automation and the protected label; Automated Handling Time is not required for that protection. Read the badge and conditions for the order you are buying.
Do not reduce this to a carrier-name check. Two labels can both say USPS while coming through different purchase workflows. Save the purchase record with the order so you can establish which route produced it. If software selects labels automatically, ask what happens when no protected service is returned. An exception queue is useful only when someone reviews it before the handover deadline. Silent substitution makes both the cost record and the protection record harder to interpret.
When inventory moves to another address, revisit the automation inputs and the actual pickup. A nearby packer might be quicker at preparation while having an earlier local carrier cutoff. The change could improve one part of the journey and weaken another. Test the full route from that address. Keep a separate note of the old origin so you can explain historical orders without applying the new location to parcels that left somewhere else.
Can USPS Ground Advantage support the promise you show?
USPS describes Ground Advantage as expected delivery in two to five days, with slower service possible for certain destinations and hazardous materials. Its national service description is not an order-specific arrival guarantee. Compare the actual destination and acceptance date with the Amazon deadline. Preparation time occurs before that carrier journey; it should not disappear when you enter a transit estimate.
An illustrative timing test makes the problem visible. If you need a full business day to prepare an order, a service whose own expected journey can take five days does not establish a two-day customer promise. This is a planning comparison, not Amazon’s exact promise-calculation formula. Check the live order dates and service recommendation. Also distinguish a carrier’s weekend delivery capability from your own ability to hand parcels over on a weekend.
Compare packaged measurements, not product measurements. Padding and the box travel too. A catalog weight that excludes packaging can produce a misleading rate or a service selection you cannot actually buy. Preserve the measurements of the parcel configuration used for each SKU. If you switch packaging, update that record before using the old calculation as a cost forecast. The delivery promise and the shipping bill both depend on the parcel that leaves.
What does a dated AirPost quote tell you about free shipping?
The AirPost US-to-US options page, retrieved October 14, 2026, displayed small-parcel USPS Ground Advantage from approximately $7.78 and FedEx Ground Economy from approximately $8.22. Both displayed amounts include the platform fee; the payment you agree with the sender is additional. These are indicative starting prices with converted USD display, not a quote for your exact ZIP codes, dimensions or Amazon label purchase.
Subtracting the displayed starting amounts gives $8.22 − $7.78 = $0.44 per parcel. For ten hypothetical parcels at those unchanged starting amounts, the displayed label totals would be $82.20 and $77.80, a $4.40 difference. This is arithmetic on the published prices, not observed shipping volume. Packaging, sender compensation and any address-specific price adjustment remain outside that calculation. Do not add the platform fee again.
If you set the customer’s shipping charge to zero, your product margin must absorb the actual total. Write the agreed sender payment as its own line before deciding whether free shipping works. The starting-price comparison helps identify a cost question; it does not choose a service for a deadline. Buying a label elsewhere also does not establish Amazon’s protected-label conditions. Compare the live eligible Amazon option when assessing an Amazon order.
What should you test when someone else packs your stock?
AirPost’s copy describes placing stock and packaging with a local sender who packs and hands orders to the carrier. Its documented automated shop connection is Shopify. For a proposed Amazon workflow, establish order intake, label purchase and shipment confirmation separately. Use AirPost’s seller information to discuss the physical work, then confirm who owns every marketplace action before assigning an order.
Rehearse a representative parcel and an exception such as a missing variant. The packer should know when to stop and contact you; you should know how to pause or adjust the offer. Keep the origin, package and handover reference together. Our domestic shipping explanation helps distinguish the company address from the shipping origin, while the first-order walkthrough helps structure a physical rehearsal.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I change an Amazon FBM shipping template?
Use the shipping settings and templates in Seller Central. Check the assigned offers as well as the template itself; a saved change is useful only if the intended SKU uses it.
Can I offer free shipping on Amazon FBM?
Check the rate options available for your account and template. A zero customer charge needs a margin calculation using the real label, packing payment and materials.
Does changing a template make older late orders compliant?
A new setting does not change the physical history of an earlier shipment. Retain the original order dates and use the applicable Account Health process for existing enforcement.
Should every SKU use the same shipping template?
Only when the preparation, origin and service assumptions genuinely match. Products needing different work deserve a separate review before they inherit the same promise.
Does an AirPost USPS label automatically carry Amazon OTDR protection?
The carrier name does not establish the purchase workflow or protection badge. Verify the qualifying Amazon tools and label for the specific order.
