In short
- For 2 different merch items available from the same origin, Bandcamp uses the highest base shipping charge and adds the other item’s additional-unit charge. Test that basket against the packed order; items from different origins are grouped into separate orders before combined shipping is calculated.
- For repeated units of the same item, the calculation is one base charge plus an additional-unit charge for each extra unit.
- A shirt, record and signed insert may need a different parcel from a shirt alone. Additional-item shipping must reflect the actual change in cost.
- Bandcamp does not let you block particular destination countries, so describe shipping limits and deal with unsupported orders explicitly.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A fan adds your record and a tour shirt to the same Bandcamp basket. You intended to send them together, but the charge looks like two complete shipments. Or the opposite happens: the checkout adds almost nothing for the shirt, while the packed bundle no longer qualifies for the service behind your first-item price. Both errors begin with settings that were checked one product at a time. Approve representative baskets before making the drop public.
What exactly does Bandcamp add for a second merch item?
Bandcamp’s combined-shipping instructions distinguish repeated units from mixed products. With repeated units at one origin, checkout starts with the base and adds the incremental charge for each extra unit. With different products at one origin, it chooses the highest base and adds the incremental charges for the other items. Those settings are your charges to the fan; they are not automatically calculated carrier costs.
Build your rates from a finished package, then use the documented formula to test the basket. The first-item base should cover the costs you intend that shipment to recover. The additional-item field should represent the extra cost when that item joins a compatible order. A second shirt does not automatically need a second platform fee, but it can change the parcel category, the transport service or the amount of protective material.
Keep the base and incremental amounts with the relevant destination region and origin. A domestic UK basket and an international basket can have different cost changes even when they contain the same merch. Copying one increment across all regions makes that difference invisible. Treat the rate as a rule for a tested combination, and revisit it when you replace packaging or add a substantially different product.
Which combinations should a band test before releasing a drop?
| Basket to test | Physical question | Setting or decision to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 shirt | Does the folded shirt fit the intended finished parcel? | The shirt base covers that shipment |
| 2 shirts of different sizes | Does the extra garment change weight or parcel format? | The additional shirt charge covers the real increase |
| Record plus shirt | Does the garment press against the sleeve or require a different box? | The highest base and added increment recover the packed cost |
| Record plus signed card | Is the card protected inside the same package? | Avoid pricing a second parcel if you agreed one protected bundle |
| 3 different products | Can all advertised contents travel together? | Test the actual formula and all additional-item fields |
| Products stocked at separate origins | Will two people dispatch separately? | Check the separate origin groups and customer explanation |
Start with the combinations promoted in your release video or email. If you encourage fans to add a shirt to a record, that basket deserves a physical packing trial before you recommend it. Use the actual record mailer, the largest relevant garment and any signed extras. Record the closed dimensions and weight, plus the service you checked. A product photograph tells you little about the final shipping package.
Check the checkout output separately from the packing result. A parcel may be sensible while the Bandcamp fields still charge the wrong total. Record the observed basket charge, its origin and the rate version used. Then compare it with your cost model. If a product changes which base is highest, run the mixed basket again rather than assuming the old record-based calculation remains the one checkout will use.
What happens when a record and shirt ship from different places?
The combined-shipping rules group products into separate orders when their origins differ. Bandcamp’s multiple-location help also says it chooses the origin offering the buyer the cheapest rate, based on the buyer’s location and available stock. Each origin can have its own stock, fulfillment partner and rates. Therefore the basket you tested while both items were in stock can change after one origin sells out.
Run an origin test as well as a product test. Check a mixed basket with both products available at the preferred origin, then with one product unavailable there. Do not assume that an apparently single fan checkout means the goods will be packed by one person. Read the resulting orders and shipping amounts. Your dispatch instructions should identify which items belong to each origin’s parcel, with no invitation to pick an item from stock that is elsewhere.
When using an external sender, describe the actual origin in the platform and agree who keeps its quantity current. AirPost’s seller page explains holding shop stock with people who pack orders locally. That arrangement does not establish a Bandcamp inventory connection by itself. For a Bandcamp order, agree the manual handoff and reporting procedure instead of assuming stock and tracking will appear automatically in both systems.
How do AirPost handling fees affect an additional-item charge?
The AirPost constants checked on 14 October 2026 give a platform fee of €0.85 and a recommended small-parcel preparation fee of €2.25. Together those components are €3.10 for one qualifying shipment. They are quoted in euros here; this is a handling calculation for a UK seller, not a sterling transport quote or a complete amount to enter as Bandcamp shipping.
If adding a second shirt leaves the order in the same accepted small-parcel category, the model adds 0 extra platform fees and 0 extra standard preparation fees. You still check extra materials, the sender’s actual agreement and the carrier cost. If the bundle moves to the standard parcel category, the recommended preparation becomes €3.00, giving €3.85 with the platform fee. The handling increase is then €0.75.
Two separate qualifying small parcels instead incur €6.20 for those handling components. Compared with one small parcel, that adds €3.10 before extra transport and material costs. The sender sets the actual preparation fee. You can use the calculation to explain why an agreed combined order and a two-origin order need different budgets, without presenting the recommended fee as a guaranteed bespoke packing quote.
Write your base as carrier charge plus materials plus agreed handling, with any other charges you actually intend to recover. Write your increment as the difference between a tested combined shipment and that base shipment. This approach also reveals when an increment cannot reliably cover your catalogue: a rolled poster may require an entirely different parcel rather than a small addition to a record box. Decide that product’s dispatch arrangement before choosing a convenient-looking number.
Can you stop unsupported countries from ordering the drop?
Bandcamp’s destination-country help says sellers cannot block individual countries from ordering merch. It recommends stating shipping limits in item descriptions and policies, then cancelling and refunding unsupported orders through the Merch Orders page. A description therefore communicates a limit but is not a checkout barrier. Assign someone to check destination exceptions before a packing partner dispatches them.
Be specific about which orders need review. A supported destination with an untested record-and-poster combination is a different issue from a destination you cannot serve at all. Keep the customer informed while you check the former; follow the platform’s refund process for the latter. Do not solve an unsupported order by picking a cheap domestic label that does not match the destination or the actual parcel.
What should the final rate check leave you with?
Keep a short approval record for each promoted basket: contents, origin, packed measurements, checked service, complete cost and observed Bandcamp charge. Add the owner who updates it when stock or packaging changes. This is more useful than a universal “shipping from” sentence because it shows which combinations you can actually dispatch at the advertised charge. It also gives the packer an agreed reason to hold an unfamiliar combination.
If you need the wider cost framework, read how to calculate average shipping cost per order. Apply that framework to these tested baskets, then keep the Bandcamp checkout formula as its own check. A rate is ready when both the fan’s total and your parcel cost have been checked; neither one can substitute for the other.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bandcamp combine shipping for two albums?
For items available from the same origin, it applies the combined-shipping formula using your base and incremental settings. Check the actual basket and package before assuming the second album has no extra cost.
Why are my Bandcamp shipping costs high for mixed merch?
Check the highest base, the other items’ incremental charges and whether the items are split across origins. Any of those can change the total even if a fan regards the purchase as one basket.
Can I set additional-item shipping to zero?
Only use a zero increment when your tested cost model supports it. The carrier charge, materials or agreed preparation may rise even if the combined order still looks like one parcel.
Can Bandcamp choose a different shipping origin?
Its help says it chooses the cheapest available origin using buyer location and stock. Test what happens when a product is unavailable at your usual origin.
Can I block countries I do not ship merch to?
Bandcamp says that country blocking is unavailable. State your limits clearly and review unsupported orders for cancellation and refund before dispatch.
