In short

  • For United States orders, Canada Post Tracked Packet–USA has a 2 kg maximum, while Chit Chats US Select allows up to 15 lb with different size limits. Neither brand is universally cheaper; compare the same packed order after duty handling, access to the handoff point and service eligibility are included.
  • The former US$800 duty-free assumption is unsuitable for this comparison. Canada Post and Chit Chats publish current prepaid-duty workflows that your shipment must follow.
  • Chit Chats’ CUSMA approval and eligible postage must match. Approval for a product does not make every Chit Chats service duty-free.
  • Record label creation, consolidator receipt and carrier acceptance separately when setting the customer’s dispatch expectation.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A Canadian shop sending orders to the United States is comparing two routes through a network. With Canada Post, you buy a postal service and hand over through its deposit network. With Chit Chats, your parcel enters a consolidator’s process and then the selected delivery service. The choice starts with your finished package and product data, not the logo on the label. The official service and customs pages below were checked on 14 October 2026.

Which U.S. service can actually carry my packed product?

Canada Post’s U.S. size and weight rules set Tracked Packet–USA at a maximum 2 kg, 600 mm for an individual dimension and 900 mm for length plus width plus height. Those are package limits. Add the carton, protective material and any inserts before deciding the product is eligible.

The Chit Chats U.S. Select service page publishes a 15 lb maximum, a longest side no greater than 21 inches and other sides no greater than 17 inches. It excludes tubes. The separate Canada Post Tracked Packet product page gives a projected 4–7 business days between most major urban centres; U.S. Select publishes 4–9 business days. These ranges are not guaranteed arrival appointments.

If either service rejects the package, move to another eligible product before comparing cost. Trying to force a larger box into a packet service can turn a cheap quote into an adjustment or a parcel that cannot enter the network. Keep the eligibility result beside the quote so your packing team cannot reuse the rate for a different carton.

Will the U.S. customer pay duties when the parcel arrives?

Start with the purchase workflow, because an old comparison may assume the recipient settles everything later. Canada Post’s Zonos instructions explain automatic billing through a Verified Account and a manual app route. They describe a 13-character Declaration ID used to connect the shipment to the required declaration and duty process. For the manual route, finish that process before trying to generate the label.

Chit Chats’ DDP and DDU guidance says U.S.-bound shipments must use Delivered Duties Paid postage. The U.S. Select instructions require the product’s 10-digit HTS code, country of origin and manufacturer information. The origin is about the goods, rather than the location of your Canadian shop. An item held in Canadian inventory does not acquire Canadian manufacturing origin merely because you dispatch it from Canada.

Do not publish a blanket tariff percentage from this article. Your product classification, origin, service and current rules determine the result shown by the provider. Collect the actual duty and clearance result for the order before promising an all-inclusive checkout amount. Preserve the declaration data so you can explain a charge without trying to reconstruct the product description after delivery.

Does CUSMA approval make Chit Chats the better route?

It can change the comparison for an eligible product, but it is conditional. The Chit Chats certification instructions, updated in October 2026, distinguish eligible USPS-based DDP options from International Tracked to the U.S. The latter does not provide the described CUSMA treatment. Check the exact postage name, product approval and matching declaration data before treating a duty benefit as available.

Those instructions describe approval by country of origin and 10-digit HTS code, rather than by shipment or SKU, with validity for one year. They also say duty and reciprocal-tariff refunds or credits are not issued when postage was bought before approval. Wait for confirmation before purchasing a label on the assumption that a pending application will reduce its customs cost later.

Maintain the approval beside the relevant product information in your store records. A color variation with unchanged origin and classification raises a different question from a bundle containing another product. Check what each line actually contains. This reduces the chance that a packing preset quietly applies one item’s approval to unrelated merchandise. Even preferential treatment does not establish that every processing charge disappears.

When should my customer expect tracking to start moving?

A purchased label establishes a shipment reference, not physical possession by the network. Separate the work your store controls from the events the carrier records. Your own sequence is pick, pack, label and hand over. The recorded sequence may then show consolidator processing and onward carrier events. A customer seeing a label-created status needs a truthful description of the parcel’s stage, not an assurance that it has already left Canada.

Check the handoff location you can actually reach before its collection cutoff. If you must send a consolidated carton to Chit Chats, include that first leg in the operating decision and ask when the individual parcels enter processing. For Canada Post, confirm the deposit arrangement for the selected postal service. Neither an opening-hours listing nor a successfully printed label proves that the day’s transport has departed.

  1. Fix the package and declaration

Measure the finished parcel, verify its contents and record origin and classification information before comparing eligible services.

  2. Keep both provider results

Save matching quotes and their duty treatment. Record when they were obtained and which charges are included or billed separately.

  3. Plan the physical handoff

Choose the location and collection opportunity your dispatch team can meet. Include any preliminary transport to the consolidator.

  4. Reconcile the shipment afterward

Match order, label, acceptance events and final charges. Investigate missing events without buying a second label for the same order.

How do I compare an immediate postage charge with a later duty invoice?

Canada Post’s Zonos support page says Verified Account invoices follow customs clearance and the saved payment method is charged within 24 hours after invoice generation. Its reconciliation instructions use the tracking number to match the duty invoice with the Canada Post shipping invoice. Record both against the same store order. The number charged when you bought postage is therefore not automatically the finished cost of that U.S. shipment.

Create columns for transport, duty and clearance, optional coverage, packaging and handoff expense. Mark an unknown amount as pending. A pending duty invoice is different from zero duty. Use the same categories for Chit Chats even if more charges appear together at postage purchase. This gives you a comparison that survives different billing schedules. The shipping-cost worksheet explains the category separation; use Canadian figures here.

Where does AirPost fit if my real problem is packing orders?

AirPost’s Canadian domestic page showed a small-format starting transport amount of approximately C$13.70 and a medium-format amount of C$15.85 on 14 October 2026. Subtracting the displayed amounts gives C$2.15, before either sender’s negotiated fee. That is a box-format budgeting example for Canada-to-Canada dispatch, not evidence that AirPost beats either provider on a U.S. route.

The attempted AirPost Canada-to-U.S. options link displayed Canada-to-Canada during this check, so it supplied no usable cross-border price. AirPost’s seller model lets a sender hold inventory, pack and drop off orders; the Canadian transport display includes the platform fee and excludes the agreed sender fee. Its CAD figures are approximate, with euro settlement. Confirm an available route and a real quote before comparing cross-border fulfillment; a domestic starting rate cannot fill a missing international quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chit Chats cheaper than Canada Post for U.S. orders?

There is no universal result from the published service descriptions. Quote the same package and include duty processing, handoff expense and any later invoices before comparing totals.

Can I send a parcel heavier than 2 kg with Tracked Packet–USA?

No. The published maximum is 2 kg. Investigate another Canada Post product or an eligible alternative rather than changing the declared weight.

Does Chit Chats U.S. Select accept tubes?

Its current service instructions say tubes are not permitted. Weight eligibility alone is insufficient; package shape and dimensions also matter.

Can I buy postage while waiting for Chit Chats CUSMA approval?

Do not assume approval will produce a later refund. Chit Chats says applicable duty and reciprocal-tariff credits are not issued for postage bought before approval.

Can I compare AirPost’s Canadian starting rate with a U.S. label?

No. The rate observed here was domestic. The attempted U.S. link returned a domestic page, so this article has no validated AirPost Canada-to-U.S. quote.
