Domestic shipping terms: CPT and DAP put stock risk in different places

Buying stock from a domestic supplier? Compare CPT and DAP, separate freight payment from risk, and check what happens before a local sender receives inventory.

In short

  • Domestic shipping terms can use Incoterms 2020: 7 of the 11 rules cover any transport mode. Under CPT the seller pays carriage but risk passes at delivery to the carrier; under DAP risk remains with the seller until the goods reach the agreed destination ready for unloading.
  • The person paying the freight is not necessarily the person bearing the stock’s transit risk.
  • Use these terms for a relevant sale of goods; moving stock you already own needs a transport or storage agreement rather than an imaginary new sale.
  • Name the location precisely and document unloading, insurance and stock acceptance separately.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Your supplier offers delivery included to the address where you will hold inventory. The box is damaged in transit. You know who paid the carrier, but that alone does not answer who bore the risk between collection and arrival. For a webshop buying replenishment stock, that unanswered question can matter before the first customer order has even been packed.

CPT and DAP are useful to compare because both can involve seller-arranged transport to a named destination, yet their risk points differ. The discussion below concerns a business purchase of goods. Do not paste wholesale terms into a consumer checkout or treat them as a complete fulfilment contract. Start with the domestic shipping definition if you first need to distinguish a local customer parcel from an inbound stock movement.

Can Incoterms be used when no international border is crossed?

Yes. ICC describes Incoterms 2020 as rules for domestic and international trade terms. They allocate specified responsibilities in sales of goods, including transport, costs and delivery risk. They are not customs forms that become relevant only when a truck reaches a border. ICC’s own publication identifies that domestic and international scope.

The transport mode still matters. The US International Trade Administration lists seven rules for any mode and four for sea and inland waterway transport. CPT and DAP sit in the any-mode group, making them relevant to a road-carried stock purchase. A familiar maritime abbreviation should not be selected for a parcel merely because someone has used it on old supplier invoices.

Specify the edition when incorporating a rule into your contract. The authority’s guidance says parties can agree an older version but must identify it clearly. That gives your purchasing team a practical check: the abbreviation, named place and version should agree across the quote, order acceptance and invoice. Trade.gov lists the rules and version guidance.

Why does CPT separate the freight bill from the risk?

Under CPT, the seller arranges and pays transport to the named destination, while delivery and risk transfer occur when goods are handed to the carrier at the agreed delivery point. Where the journey uses successive carriers, the first-carrier handover matters unless the parties have specified the relevant point appropriately. Do not read the destination written after CPT as the automatic risk-transfer location.

ICC Academy specifically advises agreeing the delivery point as well as the destination for this reason. Its CPT explanation separates the two places. For your purchase order, put both questions to the supplier: where does your delivery obligation occur, and how far have you paid to transport the stock? An answer to only the second question leaves the first unresolved.

Imagine a supplier in Manchester selling stock to your shop for delivery at its agreed Birmingham stock location. Under the CPT structure, a damaged journey can be the buyer’s risk after the relevant carrier handover even though the supplier bought the transport. That is a contract illustration, not a claim about a particular supplier. Before accepting it, identify who will pursue a carrier claim and what evidence the other party must provide.

What changes if the same purchase uses DAP?

DAP places delivery at the named destination, with the goods on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading. The buyer normally undertakes unloading at its own risk and cost. DPU differs because its delivery obligation includes unloading. Those distinctions should be checked against the actual receiving location rather than collapsed into a promise that everything is delivered to your door.

ICC Academy’s DAP guidance explains destination delivery and unloading. For a small stock location, the physical question is whether someone can receive the arriving consignment in the way the contract anticipates. A ground-floor parcel handover and a pallet requiring unloading equipment are different receiving arrangements, even when the address written on the order is identical.

Treat the table as a way to ask the right contract questions, not as replacement clauses. The agreed place, delivery point and any amendments matter. When terms are inconsistent across documents, resolve them before dispatch. A packing photograph after arrival will not repair a purchase order that never established which obligations the parties accepted.

Do these rules settle ownership, insurance and every claim?

No. Trade.gov identifies ownership, payment terms and remedies for breach among matters Incoterms do not determine. ICC Academy also separates the transfer of risk from ownership in its delivery guidance. Keep title to stock, payment dates and shortage or damage procedures in the purchase agreement. ICC Academy explains why delivery and risk points need careful treatment.

Neither CPT nor DAP automatically imposes the insurance-purchase obligation associated with the insurance-specific rules. Ask who has arranged cover, what journey it applies to and who can claim. The fact that a carrier offers some compensation does not answer whether your inventory’s value is adequately covered. Resolve the question against the actual policy and transport contract, rather than assuming the trade abbreviation is an insurance certificate.

Build an evidence request into your buying workflow: accepted order, packing list, transport reference, handover proof, arrival condition and the report of any discrepancy. Use the references consistently so the receiving person can identify which stock belongs to which purchase. Photographs are more useful when they can be linked to the consignment and time of receipt than when they sit unlabelled in a chat.

What if you are moving your own stock to an AirPost sender?

That is different from buying goods from the supplier. If the inventory already belongs to your shop, sending it to another holding location is not automatically another sale of goods. Agree the transport and receiving arrangements for that stock movement. Do not assume that writing DAP beside a sender’s address determines storage responsibility, stock counting, order preparation or the handling of returns.

AirPost’s copy describes a shop sending products and packaging to a local sender, who packs customer orders and takes parcels to a parcel point. The customer shipment is a later movement. Explore that local fulfilment model after agreeing what stock the sender can receive and how discrepancies will be reported. Keep the supplier purchase, stock placement and customer dispatch as separate records.

For the customer-dispatch stage only, AirPost’s constants checked on 19 October 2026 show a recommended small-parcel sender fee of €2.25 and a platform fee of €0.85. Their sum is €3.10, before postage, materials and stock transport. This calculation does not price receipt of a wholesale consignment or buy stock insurance. Use the sender’s actual agreed fee for your decision.

Which questions belong in your next supplier order?

Ask for the rule and edition, the named destination, the delivery point where relevant, who unloads, and who supplies evidence if damage occurs. Confirm that the carrier and receiving arrangement fit the site. Then identify the separate ownership, insurance and payment provisions. You should be able to point to a document for each answer before the goods leave the supplier.

For a shop adding a dispatch location, this is more useful than arguing over the word domestic. Local distance does not settle commercial responsibility. A clearly documented stock purchase lets the receiving person concentrate on checking what arrived, while your shop knows which agreement governs any discrepancy.

Frequently asked questions

What are domestic shipping terms?

They are the agreed conditions governing a local shipment or related sale. For a business goods purchase, an incorporated Incoterms rule can allocate specified delivery, cost and risk responsibilities, but it is not the whole contract.

Can I use CPT for domestic road transport?

CPT belongs to the any-mode rules and can be used for an appropriate domestic goods sale. Specify the edition and relevant places so freight payment is not confused with the delivery obligation.

Does delivery included mean the supplier carries all transit risk?

No. Identify the agreed rule and risk point rather than inferring them from who paid the carrier. Resolve ambiguous supplier wording before accepting the order.

Does DAP include unloading?

DAP delivery is ready for unloading at the agreed destination. If unloading needs to be included in the seller’s delivery obligation, examine the appropriate alternative and the actual receiving arrangements.

Do Incoterms replace my fulfilment agreement?

No. Order packing, inventory records, storage arrangements and returns need their own terms. Moving stock you already own also needs a different analysis from purchasing goods from a supplier.
