In short

  • Etsy’s free shipping guarantee applies standard free shipping to eligible US purchases of $35 USD or more from your shop. You still pay dispatch costs, while a buyer choosing a shipping upgrade pays for that upgrade; check the margin on qualifying baskets before activating it.
  • The guarantee applies to individual qualifying items and qualifying orders; it is not a postage credit from Etsy.
  • Price changes made through the smart pricing tool remain if you later switch off the guarantee.
  • The guarantee and Etsy’s separate shipping-price search criteria have different rules and exceptions.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You can make the shipping line disappear from an Etsy checkout without making the carrier bill disappear from your shop. The guarantee changes the customer offer. Whether it works financially depends on the products in the qualifying basket, the destination and the way you pack the order. Test those costs before treating the badge as a shop-wide pricing decision.

For a US seller, the difficult basket may be an order that only just qualifies, especially when it combines low-margin products or needs separate packages. Start there. A comfortably profitable expensive item can hide the cost problem created by smaller items bought together. Use your actual costs rather than assuming every qualifying order has the same dispatch expense.

Which purchases get free standard shipping under the guarantee?

Etsy’s official free-shipping guidance lists an individual item priced at $35 USD or above and an order with a qualifying total of $35 USD or above. The guarantee applies to US buyers, including when the seller is outside the US. For this article, the packing and rate examples concern a shop dispatching domestically within the United States.

Once activated, the guarantee also applies to new qualifying listings regardless of the shop’s currency setting. Etsy says shipping prices for buyers in other countries remain as specified in your profiles and listings. Review the customer’s actual destination in your tests. A free US standard offer should not be described as free worldwide shipping.

Etsy explicitly says buyers choosing shipping upgrades are charged for them even when their order qualifies for the guarantee. Show the difference between the standard offer and the optional service clearly. Keep the buyer’s choice attached to the packing instructions, because using the standard service after collecting an upgrade payment creates a different problem from pricing the guarantee.

What does a $35 order leave after a real shipping reference?

AirPost’s US-to-US shipping-options page retrieved October 14, 2026, showed USPS Ground Advantage small-parcel shipping from approximately $7.78 and FedEx Ground Economy from $8.22. Its displayed prices include the AirPost platform fee and exclude the sender compensation you agree. They are dated starting references, not a quote for your Etsy order or a claim about Etsy’s own label prices.

Using the $35 guarantee threshold solely as an illustrative order value, $35 − $7.78 = $27.22 remains after the USPS shipping reference. Using the FedEx reference leaves $26.78. Neither remainder is profit: product cost, packaging, agreed sender compensation and applicable Etsy charges still need to come out. The shipping reference alone uses approximately 22.23% or 23.49% of that threshold amount.

A useful contribution calculation is item revenue minus product cost, marketplace charges, shipping, packaging and packing compensation. Enter your own costs in each remaining field. Do not subtract a second AirPost platform fee from a shipping quote that already includes it. If you pack yourself, evaluate the time the work takes instead of pretending that the task disappears from the order.

The AirPost page presents USD as an approximate converted display and states payment is in euros. Use the actual quote and payment amount for the order before making a final margin decision. For a sender arrangement, the AirPost seller page describes holding stock, preparing orders and carrier handoff. Agree compensation and the manual marketplace order process described in its copy.

Should you build shipping into each item or into the basket?

There is no single correct uplift for every product. An item that normally ships alone and an accessory normally added to another order create different costs. If you add a full standalone shipping allowance to every accessory, a combined basket can recover the same transport cost more than once. If you add nothing, a qualifying basket of accessories may leave the whole dispatch bill unfunded.

Test the product combinations you actually offer: a standalone item, an accessory-heavy basket and a fragile combination that cannot share packaging. Check whether your chosen prices leave enough after the relevant dispatch. The multi-item calculated-shipping guide explains why a customer’s single checkout can still result in multiple carrier packages.

Moving shipping into the item price is a presentation change, not an exemption from Etsy fees. Etsy’s Fees and Payments Policy applies its transaction fee to the listing price plus the shipping and gift-wrapping amounts you charge. Review the complete fee calculation for your account. Do not compare a shipping-inclusive price with a shipping-exclusive price while leaving one side’s marketplace expenses out.

Keep a baseline record before repricing: item price, standard shipping charge, profiles and eligible variations. That record lets you compare what the buyer pays and what you retain. Evaluate the total paid and contribution together, rather than celebrating a lower shipping line while the basket margin falls.

What will Etsy’s smart pricing tool change for a US shop?

Etsy says access to its smart pricing tool requires a US shop, an activated free shipping guarantee and items at the qualifying price level that do not already ship free. The tool can bulk-edit listing prices to help recover shipping. Review its proposed changes product by product; a tool suggestion is not evidence that every product now covers its real packing and destination costs.

For calculated shipping, Etsy describes closest-buyer, average-buyer-distance and farthest-buyer options. The average-distance option uses the median distance of your US orders over the previous year, or a median for similar items when your own data is insufficient. That is a distance-based pricing aid, not your complete average fulfillment expense. A heavier box or additional sender payment still belongs in your calculation.

The tool also affects profiles. Etsy says profiles combining items above and below the threshold can be separated, with qualifying items moved to a profile whose name ends in “Reduced shipping.” Variation prices move by the same amount as the base listing adjustment. After publishing, inspect which profile each listing now uses and test the least expensive variation as well as the most expensive one.

The new item prices apply to shoppers outside the US too. Review any international offers you retain so shipping already included in the item price is not accidentally recovered again. This article does not quote an international rate: use the actual applicable profile and route before deciding what to charge those buyers.

Does free shipping guarantee a better search position?

Treat older search promises cautiously. Etsy’s published US domestic shipping-price guidance, checked October 14, 2026, describes prioritizing eligible listings with shipping below $6, including free shipping. It also lists exceptions, including calculated-shipping listings. This is a specific shipping-price criterion, not a promise that the free shipping guarantee alone will make your listing outrank competitors.

The same guidance distinguishes qualifying higher-priced guarantee listings from items below $35 that still carry a shipping charge. Those lower-priced listings can be affected by the criterion if their shipping is otherwise $6 or above. Review the shop’s Search Visibility information for the actual listings rather than treating the guarantee as covering every search-related shipping issue.

Make the decision from the offer you can sustain. Compare your own order contributions and customer behavior after a change, with enough context to distinguish changes in products or seasonality. No growth percentage is assumed here. A shipping badge is useful only if the shop can deliver what it advertises at a price that pays for the order.

What should you review if you switch the guarantee off?

Etsy says smart-pricing changes remain after you turn off the guarantee. Disabling the feature is therefore not a complete restoration of your old pricing. Use the saved baseline to inspect listing prices, variation prices and the profiles created or altered by the tool. Decide what should remain based on the offer you now want to make.

Run the threshold tests again after your edits. Confirm standard and upgraded US orders, below-threshold baskets and any other destinations you support. Then tell the person packing your stock which shipping instructions apply. For the cost review, average shipping cost per order gives a way to reconcile the invoices with your completed dispatches.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays for Etsy free shipping?

You still pay the shipping provider and any packing costs. The guarantee changes what the buyer is charged for standard shipping; it is not a reimbursement of your postage.

Does Etsy free shipping over $35 include upgrades?

Etsy says optional shipping upgrades remain charged even when the purchase qualifies for the guarantee. Test the upgrade separately and dispatch using the service purchased.

Can several lower-priced items qualify together?

Etsy’s guidance covers qualifying orders reaching $35 USD as well as qualifying individual items. Check the actual US basket and budget its real packaging and parcel count.

Will turning off the guarantee restore my old prices?

No. Etsy says price changes from its smart pricing tool remain. Review listing prices, variations and affected profiles against your saved baseline.

Does the guarantee make all my listings exempt from shipping-price search criteria?

Etsy’s published guidance distinguishes qualifying higher-priced listings from lower-priced listings that still have a shipping charge, and separately excludes calculated shipping. Check each listing’s situation.
