In short

  • US Etsy sellers can buy First-Class Letter labels for qualifying machinable mail up to 3.5 oz, or Flat labels up to 13 oz. Check the finished envelope’s dimensions, flexibility and thickness; a rigid item can require parcel postage even when its envelope is small.
  • Etsy lists letter maximums of 11.5 × 6.125 × 0.25 inches and flat maximums of 15 × 12 × 0.75 inches.
  • Tracking for this Etsy letter-and-flat service comes from Pitney Bowes, rather than USPS parcel tracking.
  • Use a separate packing instruction for bundles: extra cards, protective boards or rigid add-ons can change the mail category.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A sticker order and a metal keychain can fit in the same outer envelope, but that does not make their postage interchangeable. The mail category describes the complete piece moving through sorting equipment. When you decide what to charge on Etsy, test the product, protective materials and envelope together. Measuring an empty mailer can give you the wrong answer before the order even arrives.

This decision is especially useful for shops selling paper goods. You want to protect the item without paying parcel postage unnecessarily, yet adding a stiff board can remove the flexibility required by the cheaper service. Build a verified packing specification for each product family. Keep the postal requirement and the damage-prevention requirement together so someone helping with packing does not solve one by breaking the other.

Which Etsy envelope label can your finished order use?

Etsy’s First-Class flats-and-letters guidance tells US sellers to choose Letter or Flat as the package type when purchasing postage. Its published limits distinguish both weight and dimensions. All limits matter together: a letter that is light enough but too thick does not pass the letter test, and a flat within the dimensions still needs to be flexible and suitably uniform.

Etsy service limits and USPS physical criteria, checked October 14, 2026. These are ceilings, not a complete approval test.

USPS’s retail physical standards give the minimum letter dimensions as 5 inches long, 3.5 inches high and 0.007 inch thick. They also describe a higher minimum thickness for larger letters. Do not design a tiny decorative envelope around the maximums alone. If your product is very small, choose an appropriate outer mailpiece and check the full rule before making the postage profile available.

The flat category is not simply a heavier letter. USPS defines flat-size pieces through their dimensions and additional physical requirements. Check the applicable classification before selecting Flat for an overweight letter-shaped package. The booking screen can accept entered measurements without proving that your contents qualify for the selected mail category.

Why can a keychain or cardboard insert fail the test?

Etsy explicitly uses a metal keychain as an example of contents that may be too rigid or too uneven in thickness. The envelope could stay within the published outer dimensions and still fail. Etsy warns that nonqualifying letters and flats may face price adjustments, delivery problems or missing tracking. The product’s behavior inside the envelope is part of the decision.

USPS lists letter nonmachinable characteristics including an aspect ratio below 1.3 or above 2.5, clasps or similar closures, and items that make the piece uneven. Calculate length divided by height for the finished mailpiece. A square envelope has a ratio of 1, outside that machinable-letter interval. A pleasing presentation format can therefore change the shipping category you should budget for.

For flats, USPS requires flexibility and uniform thickness. Its rules say boxes are not flats, including boxes with hinges or gaps that allow bending. An envelope tightly filled with a box is also not a flat. Putting a jewelry box into a larger paper envelope does not turn that boxed order into eligible First-Class flat mail.

USPS’s uniform-thickness rule limits bumps or irregularities to a quarter-inch variance, with specified edge exclusions. Use the actual rule when assessing an unusual piece. A stack of cards with a bulky charm attached in one corner needs a different review from evenly stacked paper. Secure the contents so they do not collect at one end during handling and change the shape after packing.

How do you test a bundle without guessing at postage?

  1. Pack the smallest real order

Use the exact envelope, insert and product protection you intend to supply. Measure the sealed piece and weigh it; do not substitute the bare product’s measurements.

  2. Pack the largest combination you advertise

Include gift options and extra items that can be bought together. Check whether the thicker bundle remains flexible, uniform and within the intended service’s limits.

  3. Check any rigid option separately

Treat a keychain, frame, boxed accessory or protective backing as a possible category change. Confirm the postal classification rather than inheriting the paper-only instruction.

  4. Write the fallback instruction

State when the packer must stop using Letter or Flat and obtain a parcel quote. Keep that instruction beside the listing and order reference.

Retain a specimen or a clear description of the verified packing method. If you change envelope suppliers or replace a flexible insert with a rigid one, repeat the assessment. The SKU can stay the same while the finished mailpiece changes. Give someone packing for you an instruction that describes the materials, rather than the vague request to “ship this cheaply.”

Do not shave the stated thickness or weight to force a label purchase. A correct parcel quote is preferable to a cheaper label for a category the item does not meet. If your bundle needs another listing or shipping profile to cover its real cost, fix that offer before the next customer buys it. Keep production, packing and checkout information aligned.

Where will buyers see envelope tracking?

Etsy says this service’s tracking is provided through its Pitney Bowes partnership, not USPS. In Shop Manager, open Orders, find the order and select its tracking number. Buyers receive tracking emails and can view the information through their Etsy purchase record or app. Direct them to that order record rather than promising the same tracking experience as a USPS parcel.

Keep your customer message specific to the service purchased. Say that the order was sent with Etsy’s letter or flat service and that tracking is available on the Etsy purchase. Do not treat a printed label as evidence that the envelope has already left your packing bench. Record the actual mailing event, especially if another person prepares several orders together.

When a buyer cannot find tracking, first verify the order-to-label match and the service category. A parcel tracking number, an Etsy letter identifier and an internal packing reference are not interchangeable. Then inspect the visible events before choosing a customer-service response. The domestic shipping explanation helps separate the route from the way a shipment is actually booked.

What should you budget when the envelope needs a parcel label?

Use an actual parcel offer rather than inventing an Etsy envelope-to-parcel surcharge. On October 14, 2026, AirPost’s US-to-US route page displayed USPS Ground Advantage small-parcel shipping from approximately $7.78. That is a dated transport reference including AirPost’s platform fee, with agreed sender compensation added separately. It is not an Etsy letter price or a promise that every rigid envelope costs that amount.

If two separately dispatched parcels each qualified for that displayed starting reference, the arithmetic would be 2 × $7.78 = $15.56 before sender compensation. A single eligible combined parcel at that reference would be $7.78. This illustrates why the packing category matters; a combined order still needs its own measured quote and may no longer qualify for the same size or rate.

The AirPost page labels its USD values as converted estimates and says payment is in euros. Review the actual checkout amount before using it in your Etsy price. The AirPost seller page describes stock held by a sender who packs and drops off orders. Agree the packing specification and manually enter marketplace orders where required; do not assume an Etsy connection or this Pitney Bowes service is available there.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy an Etsy shipping label for an envelope?

US sellers can choose Letter or Flat for qualifying First-Class mail. Assess the sealed envelope’s weight, dimensions, flexibility and thickness before purchasing that category.

Can I send a keychain with an Etsy letter label?

Do not assume so. Etsy identifies metal keychains as potentially too rigid and uneven. Review the finished mailpiece and use an eligible parcel service when necessary.

Do Etsy envelope labels include tracking?

Etsy’s letter-and-flat service includes tracking information through Pitney Bowes. Buyers can view it in their Etsy purchase record; it is not the same service as USPS parcel tracking.

Can a bubble mailer qualify as an Etsy flat?

Its name is insufficient. The finished mailpiece must meet the applicable dimensions, flexibility, uniform-thickness and content requirements. A rigid boxed item inside remains a classification problem.

Should I use calculated shipping for letter mail?

Etsy’s shipping guidance directs letter-mail sellers to fixed-cost shipping where calculated parcel shipping does not fit the shipment. Base the fixed amount on a verified eligible service and packing method.
