In short
- Evri publishes no single return price for every retailer: establish the charge and who pays before offering the method. Its customer returns guidance allows 14 days before a missing-return investigation, but your consumer refund timetable must be checked separately and can depend on proof of return rather than warehouse receipt alone.
- A free return for the customer still needs a carrier and handling budget in your shop’s margin sheet.
- Keep cancellation, return handover, receipt and refund as separate events linked to the original sale.
- Confirm the receiving address and authorised person before sending a return to a local stock holder.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
An outbound order can be profitable while its return process is poorly defined. The customer sees a return label, but your shop needs to know who bought it, where the goods are going and when a refund becomes due. Evri’s customer pages answer parts of that journey. This guide turns those answers into a seller workflow, with official sources checked on 13 October 2026 and no invented retailer tariff.
What must be confirmed before you advertise Evri returns?
Evri’s returns service depends on the retailer using that arrangement. An outbound Evri parcel does not prove that your shop appears in the returns selector. Check the supported retail name, available methods and receiving destination under your actual agreement. If customers cannot find you, provide the authorised alternative rather than asking them to select a retailer with a similar name. The label must route to your intended receiving process.
Your public instructions should distinguish a change-of-mind return, faulty goods and an exchange request. They can need different decisions about costs and the customer remedy. Do not make the transport selection your only returns policy. Explain how customers contact the shop, which information identifies their order and how they receive the appropriate return instructions. Retain the version of those instructions that applied when the customer purchased.
Check that someone can actually receive the returned goods. A billing address, office mailbox and stock holder’s home are different destinations. Confirm any authorised receiving person and the parcel formats they can handle. If your outbound stock moves location, review return routing as part of that move. A label created from an old address setting can send usable stock away from the place where you plan to inspect it.
Who pays for a label described as a free return?
Evri’s official cost FAQ says charges vary by seller and retailer, with some offering free returns. The available booking gives a price after the parcel details are supplied. That is not a national business rate you can quote for every shop. Obtain the actual commercial arrangement or label total and record what is included. Free to the customer describes their payment, rather than an absence of carrier cost.
For applicable change-of-mind cancellations, Trading Standards guidance says consumers can bear direct return costs when properly informed, unless the trader agrees to pay. If the required information was not provided, the trader bears those costs. Keep faulty-goods remedies outside a blanket change-of-mind rule. A standard return deduction copied across every reason can produce the wrong customer outcome even when the carrier invoice itself is correct.
Your cost sheet should have distinct entries for return postage, agreed intake work, outbound delivery refunded where required, any replacement preparation and the condition of recovered stock. Enter actual amounts when known. Leave unresolved components marked for confirmation rather than filling gaps with a guessed Evri price. That makes the process review useful: you can see which commercial question still needs answering.
| Return situation | Cost question to resolve | Evidence the shop retains |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible change-of-mind cancellation | Was return-cost responsibility disclosed and what was promised? | Purchase terms and cancellation message |
| Faulty or incorrect item | Which remedy and reasonable return arrangements apply? | Reported fault, order contents and instructions |
| Shop-funded return label | What does the actual carrier arrangement charge? | Booking reference and invoice |
| Customer-funded supported return | Who purchased the label and opens a missing-parcel case? | Handover receipt and purchase confirmation |
| Return to a local stock holder | What receiving and inspection work was agreed? | Authorised address, intake report and agreed fee |
What should your customer know about courier collection?
Evri’s published return options include supported ParcelShop, Locker and courier methods, depending on the retailer and parcel. It allows collection bookings up to seven days ahead. The customer page lists collection hours of 8am–8pm Monday to Friday and 8am–6pm Saturday. Use the actual confirmation to give instructions; an offered method still needs suitable packaging and the correct booking.
Tell the customer which label or code to use and what handover evidence to keep. Avoid sending several alternative labels without explaining which remains valid. If you replace a failed booking, retain the relationship between the old reference and the new one. A later support enquiry should be able to identify the parcel that actually entered the network, rather than investigate an unused label.
Record a collection problem as a distinct event. A scheduled visit is different from physical handover, and neither should be silently treated as confirmed shop receipt. If the customer cannot use the selected method, follow the supported alternative agreed for the return. Do not instruct them to improvise another retailer’s barcode because the nearby point recognises it; that can break both routing and the evidence trail.
When does Evri tracking stop answering the shop’s questions?
Evri’s retailer-receipt FAQ identifies “On its way back to the retailer” as its final return tracking point and says it does not send a separate receipt confirmation. Your shop therefore needs its own intake event. Keep the customer’s tracking evidence alongside the receiving record, rather than assume that a final carrier update establishes which item was unpacked, inspected or approved for resale.
At intake, link the parcel reference to the sale before changing stock availability. Record what arrived and any discrepancy with the expected contents. Separate receipt of a sealed box from inspection of the item. If somebody else receives returns for you, agree how they report both events. A shelf count updated on parcel arrival can make a damaged or incomplete item look ready for the next sale.
If a return is missing after the period stated in Evri’s customer guidance, the funding route affects who starts the investigation. For free returns, the retailer initiates it; for paid return postage, the customer guidance provides a returns support route. Keep the handover date and purchaser relationship together. Opening the wrong type of case can waste time while your customer continues waiting for a shop response.
Can you wait for physical receipt before every cancellation refund?
No universal receipt-only rule works. For applicable consumer cancellations, Trading Standards explains reimbursement within fourteen days of getting goods back or, if earlier, receiving proof that they were sent back. It also states that no cancellation or restocking fee may be deducted when the statutory right is exercised. Apply the rules to the actual sale and return reason, including relevant exceptions.
Keep a refund review alongside the transport investigation. If the customer supplies return evidence, assess it promptly rather than automatically waiting for the carrier’s missing-parcel process to finish. The two processes answer different questions. Your internal receipt report helps with stock control; it should not be used to erase a legally relevant event already documented by the customer. Record the reason for the refund timing decision.
GOV.UK also explains that standard outbound delivery is refunded for relevant online cancellations, while an expressly selected more expensive method need only be refunded up to the standard amount. Keep the checkout delivery choice available when calculating the refund. A return label cost and the original delivery reimbursement are distinct entries. Combining them into an unexplained net deduction makes it harder for the customer and your bookkeeper to understand the result.
How do returns work when AirPost holds part of your stock?
AirPost’s shop fulfilment model uses local senders who hold stock and prepare orders. Its English returns copy describes senders who opt to accept returns and report receipt with photographs; the shop decides what happens next. Confirm that capability and the actual receiving address with the person involved. An outbound preparation agreement alone does not establish a return destination, inspection scope or price.
Budget a subsequent outgoing replacement separately from incoming handling. With repository constants retrieved on 13 October 2026, two suitable small-parcel replacements have €6.20 in illustrated sender and platform components: two times €2.25 plus two times €0.85. This excludes the carrier label, packaging, incoming return charge and other agreed work; use the sender’s accepted fee for the real order.
That example prices outgoing preparation only. Do not substitute the recommended outgoing fee for an unconfirmed incoming inspection rate. Agree how intact, damaged or incorrect items are reported and who authorises their next movement. For that initial stock relationship, see how much stock to send a sender first. Keep returned goods outside available stock until the relevant review is complete.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Evri business returns cost?
Evri’s official FAQ says costs vary by retailer. Obtain the actual agreement or booking price; a customer-facing free return does not establish that the shop pays nothing.
Can customers book Evri returns by courier?
Where supported by the retailer and parcel, the returns page offers collection up to seven days in advance. Follow the actual booking and label instructions.
Can I use Evri returns if my shop is absent from the list?
Do not assume an outbound label creates a retailer returns arrangement. Confirm the correct retail name and approved process or provide another authorised method.
Does final Evri tracking prove the item was inspected?
No. The retailer-receipt FAQ does not provide a separate intake confirmation. Your shop or authorised receiver records receipt and condition separately.
Must I wait for the return to arrive before refunding?
For applicable statutory cancellations, proof of sending can start the reimbursement timetable earlier than receipt. Check the sale, evidence and applicable exceptions.
