In short
- FedEx UK dimensional-weight calculations need a separate 2026 surcharge check: from 12 January, volume above 169,901 cm³ is an additional AHS-Dimension trigger, and above 283,168 cm³ an additional Oversize trigger. A box can cross either threshold even when its actual weight is low.
- Calculate packed volume once, then use it both for the applicable DIM formula and for volume-triggered handling checks. These are different pricing decisions.
- The linked FedEx handling guide describes an 18 kg minimum billable weight for packages meeting AHS-Dimension criteria, subject to shipment eligibility.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
Your UK shop sells light items in protective cartons. A calculator gives you a dimensional weight, so you assume you have identified the main packaging cost. In 2026 that number can leave out another decision: whether the same box qualifies for additional handling because of its cubic volume. This article helps you separate those checks before you approve a repeatable packing method.
The official pages were checked on 13 October 2026. The scope is FedEx’s published UK updates and the handling guidance linked from them. Service eligibility and account terms still matter. The examples are invented measurement scenarios for arithmetic, not customer shipments or negotiated quotes. None of the sums below claims that FedEx is available for a particular AirPost route.
What changed in the UK handling rules during 2026?
The FedEx UK rates update adds cubic-volume criteria effective 12 January 2026. AHS-Dimension includes volume exceeding 169,901 cm³. Oversize includes volume exceeding 283,168 cm³ or actual weight above 50 kg. FedEx describes these as additional criteria alongside existing rules. Staying below a volume threshold therefore does not establish that a parcel avoids every handling charge.
That update also changes the interaction between specified package surcharges. When a package qualifies for multiple listed charges, only the highest applies after discounts. The list includes AHS-Dimension, AHS-Packaging, AHS-Weight, Oversize and Unauthorized Package. This is a rule about those charges; it does not remove transport, fuel, customs or other applicable lines from a complete quote.
Keep the effective date with your packing calculation. An old screenshot might correctly describe an earlier shipment and still be unsuitable for an October order. The handling PDF linked from the update contains both updated material and historical examples. Use the section applicable to your shipping date rather than adding together every fee shown throughout that document.
How do DIM weight and cubic volume differ?
Packed volume is length × width × height. With measurements in centimetres, the result is cubic centimetres. Dimensional weight then divides that volume by the factor specified for the service. The FedEx UK explanation of dimensional weight uses 5,000 as its common metric divisor example. Confirm the applicable factor and rounding in your actual service terms.
For an illustrative 60 × 40 × 35 cm box, volume is 84,000 cm³. At divisor 5,000, DIM weight is 16.8 kg before any applicable rounding. If actual packed weight is 4 kg, the volume-based result is larger. That comparison answers a weight question. The separate volume check asks whether 84,000 crosses a handling trigger; it does not, although another size or packaging criterion could still apply.
| Illustrative packed box | Volume | DIM at divisor 5,000 | Volume-only trigger check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 × 40 × 35 cm | 84,000 cm³ | 16.8 kg | Below both new volume thresholds |
| 90 × 50 × 37 cm | 166,500 cm³ | 33.3 kg | Below AHS volume threshold |
| 90 × 50 × 38 cm | 171,000 cm³ | 34.2 kg | Above AHS volume threshold |
| 100 × 70 × 41 cm | 287,000 cm³ | 57.4 kg | Above Oversize volume threshold |
Do not read the final row as a price band or permission to ship that box. It only shows which new volume criterion is crossed. A rate still depends on the booked product and destination. The existing DHL, UPS and DPD calculation guide addresses their measurement examples; applying one of those carriers’ rounding rules to FedEx would require separate confirmation.
Can a one-centimetre packaging change trigger extra handling?
Compare the middle two rows. Raising the height from 37 to 38 cm increases volume by 90 × 50 × 1 = 4,500 cm³. The first box is 3,401 cm³ below 169,901; the second is 1,099 cm³ above it. A seemingly small change in height crosses the volume criterion because the base is large. The two boxes have length plus girth of 264 and 266 cm respectively, so neither exceeds the guide’s existing 266 cm criterion. This isolates the new volume trigger, assuming suitable packaging and weight.
You can reverse the calculation when testing a proposed carton. At a 90 × 50 cm base, 169,901 ÷ 4,500 is approximately 37.756 cm. That is the mathematical height at the volume boundary, not a recommended production target. Real carton dimensions, protection and measurement can vary. Choose a validated protective layout with clear room below the boundary rather than trying to use every fraction of a centimetre.
A smaller box must still protect the product. Test placement, immobilisation and closure before approving it. If cushioning forces a higher lid, measure the closed result. If the item has fragile protrusions, the protection required around them belongs in the outer dimensions. A nominal carton specification describes a purchased container; it does not necessarily describe your finished shipment.
Why can minimum billable weight survive another surcharge?
The FedEx additional-handling guide states that packages meeting AHS-Dimension criteria are subject to an 18 kg minimum billable weight. It also explains that this minimum can remain when Oversize or AHS-Packaging is charged and the package also meets the dimensional criteria. Removing one surcharge line from a calculation does not necessarily remove the associated weight floor.
The same current section lists dimensional criteria including a longest side above 121 cm, a second-longest side above 76 cm and combined length plus girth above 266 cm. Volume is an additional route into that check. A long narrow parcel can therefore qualify without reaching 169,901 cm³. Read the guide’s eligibility notes before using these figures as the rule for your shipment.
For an arithmetic illustration, take a 122 × 15 × 15 cm carton weighing 3 kg. Its volume is 27,450 cm³; at divisor 5,000, DIM is 5.49 kg before rounding. Yet its longest side crosses the guide’s 121 cm criterion. Where the stated minimum applies, looking only at 5.49 kg would miss the 18 kg floor. This is a different failure from the wide box that crosses a cubic threshold.
Should you split an order into two smaller cartons?
Splitting can change both dimensional results and package charges. Consider the 90 × 50 × 38 cm example as one box, versus two 50 × 45 × 38 cm boxes. Each smaller box occupies 85,500 cm³ and has 17.1 kg DIM at the example divisor. Combined DIM remains 34.2 kg before rounding, while neither smaller box crosses the new AHS volume trigger.
That is not a demonstrated saving. You now need two real transport prices, two sets of materials and a check of every other handling criterion. Rounding per package can also change the total. The carrier may price the services differently from a single carton. Compare complete accepted quotes, then decide whether the extra packing and two-parcel customer experience are worthwhile for that product combination.
Record which products go in each carton and identify both packages in the order. Avoid attaching two boxes together and treating them as a tested substitute for one outer carton. The FedEx UK packaging guidance is the relevant starting point for a stable outer package. If protection or shape changes, revisit the measured design and the handling assessment.
What belongs in a local fulfilment packing agreement?
AirPost’s local fulfilment service lets a shop place stock with a sender who packs and hands over orders. Supply a tested packing specification for each relevant product combination. Include outer dimensions, actual weight, carton version and the point at which the sender must pause for a new quote. A general instruction to use the smallest box does not define acceptable protection.
For an AirPost preparation-only example, the constants checked on 13 October 2026 provide a platform fee of €0.85 and a recommended parcel preparation fee of €3.00. Together they are €3.85 for one agreed parcel, or €7.70 for two under that assumption. These are euro-denominated AirPost components, not a sterling FedEx quote; no currency conversion is assumed. Labels, materials and stock delivery are additional, and the sender fee is agreed.
Keep the quote associated with the measured design. When a mixed basket requires a different carton, recalculate before buying its label. For a broader cost comparison after measurements are settled, use the European parcel-cost guide. The useful output of this check is a packaging decision and a complete quote, rather than one apparently precise weight number.
Frequently asked questions
What is the FedEx UK dimensional-weight divisor?
FedEx’s UK explainer uses 5,000 as the common metric example. Verify the factor and rounding applicable to your service rather than treating an example as every contract’s rule.
What volume triggers FedEx additional handling in 2026?
The UK update effective 12 January adds volume above 169,901 cm³ for AHS-Dimension. Existing dimensional and packaging checks still matter.
What is the FedEx 2026 Oversize volume threshold?
The UK update adds volume above 283,168 cm³, and actual weight above 50 kg, to Oversize criteria.
Can a parcel below the volume threshold still have an 18 kg minimum?
Yes, where it meets another AHS-Dimension criterion and the guide’s minimum applies. The 122 cm long arithmetic example shows this distinction.
Does splitting a large box always save money?
No. Compare complete quotes for both arrangements, including separate packages, rounding, preparation and materials.
