ISPM 15 pallet stamp: what should a UK shop check?

Check ISPM 15 marks on wholesale stock packaging, distinguish plywood exemptions and review the 2026 French notification rules before booking freight.

In short

  • An ISPM 15 pallet stamp contains the IPPC symbol and 3 codes: country, producer and treatment. For a UK wholesale stock movement, check the actual solid-wood packaging and route requirements before dispatch; a supplier’s paperwork does not make an unmarked pallet visibly compliant.
  • Check crates, collars and loose wood used to protect the load as well as the pallet underneath it.
  • Packaging made wholly from processed wood can fall within exemptions, but a plywood top does not establish that every component is processed wood.
  • AirPost handles local parcel preparation. It does not supply treated pallets, inspect wood for border compliance or arrange freight.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Your online shop is sending a wholesale batch to a retailer or receiving stock from a supplier abroad. The goods may fit neatly in ordinary cartons, yet the wood beneath and around them introduces a separate check. Inspect the packaging before the supplier wraps the load beyond recognition. A product invoice describes the commercial goods; it does not tell you whether each piece of solid-wood packaging has the required treatment and marking.

Which parts of a wholesale shipment count as wood packaging?

GOV.UK’s wood-packaging guidance includes pallets, packing cases, crates, pallet collars and dunnage: loose wood used to protect goods and packaging. It says solid-wood packaging used to import goods into Great Britain must meet ISPM 15. For exports, check the destination’s requirements. Great Britain here means England, Wales and Scotland; do not apply that route description automatically to a Northern Ireland shipment.

Ask your supplier for a packing description that covers the complete load. Someone may have sourced a suitable pallet and then added a timber brace from a different stockpile. Your check should include the brace rather than stopping at the pallet’s corner block. If the supplier substitutes packaging after approval, review the new arrangement. The material that leaves the loading point is the material the receiving side and border authorities will see.

How do you read an ISPM 15 pallet stamp?

The UK Plant Health Information Portal identifies the required IPPC symbol and the country, producer and treatment codes. Its example combines a two-letter country code, a producer number and a treatment designation. Use those parts to inspect an existing authorised mark. Do not turn an online illustration into a stamp that your shop prints onto untreated wood.

Keep the distinction between the goods and their packaging in your records. A batch manufactured in Britain can sit on packaging produced elsewhere. Copying the product’s origin into a field about the wood would therefore be an assumption. Ask the supplier to identify the packaging actually used. Where a freight agent needs the mark details, provide a readable photograph and the identifiers from that load rather than a general supplier brochure.

Does an ISPM 15 certificate replace the mark on the pallet?

The UK portal requires official marking on the wood packaging. A document can help you check what a supplier claims to have supplied, but it does not let you inspect a missing or obscured mark. Match supporting paperwork to the physical packaging. If the supplier sends a treatment statement for a different batch, ask for clarification before collection. The purpose is to establish what is being dispatched, not simply to collect a document with the right acronym.

Keep commercial invoice, freight instructions and packaging evidence as separate records linked to the shipment. A carrier’s acceptance of a booking is not your proof that the supplier has used suitable wood. Make the purchase instructions explicit about the packaging required for your route. GOV.UK recommends specifying those requirements in the contract with the exporter. That gives the discussion a clear starting point if the supplied packaging differs.

Is plywood packaging exempt from ISPM 15?

The UK guidance lists processed wood such as plywood among exemptions and also identifies raw wood 6 mm thick or less. Check the entire construction: a case with plywood panels can still contain solid-wood runners or braces. Obtain the materials specification rather than classifying it from one visible surface. If you are relying on an exemption for a particular destination, confirm that it applies to the complete packaging used on that movement.

Use a practical supplier question: “What are the panels, base, runners and internal braces made from?” Record the answer against the purchase. That is more useful than asking only whether the case is wooden. Request another review when the supplier changes its design. A familiar product code does not guarantee identical packaging if the supplier has changed the base or strengthened the case for a heavier batch.

Can you reuse a marked pallet after repairing it?

GOV.UK permits reuse of undamaged, uninfested packaging where ISPM 15 is accepted. Its guidance says repaired, remanufactured or changed compliant packaging needs treatment and marking arrangements to maintain the standard. Refer a repair question to an authorised provider. Do not assume that the old mark proves the status of replacement timber fitted later.

For your shop, keep damaged export packaging out of the pool of loads ready for collection until its suitability has been resolved. Tell the supplier or packing service which route the repaired unit will serve. Photograph the final packaging after any authorised work and before obscuring its identification. A repair decision made for an unrelated domestic movement should not silently become the approval for your next overseas wholesale shipment.

Does every pallet sent to France need another notification?

Do not confuse the general mark requirement with a consignment notification. The UK portal, updated on 16 September 2026, reports additional French requirements from 1 September for wood packaging accompanying goods subject to SIVEP sanitary and phytosanitary controls. It describes a CHED-PP notification alongside the existing marking requirements. Check whether your goods and packaging fall within that scope; the page does not establish that every ordinary non-SPS retail shipment needs the same notification.

Give the agent responsible for the load the commodity description and packaging details before booking. Ask which pre-notifications apply and who submits them. Where the wood information is needed, the portal distinguishes the packaging’s country of origin from the goods’ origin. A stamped pallet and a correctly submitted consignment notification solve different requirements. Confirm both where relevant rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.

What should your supplier confirm before collection?

  1. Identify the actual export or import route, including whether the receiving territory is Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
  2. List every wood-packaging component that accompanies the goods.
  3. Provide the materials specification when an exemption is being relied on.
  4. Show readable authorised marks on the packaging that will actually leave.
  5. Disclose repairs or substitutions and resolve their status with a suitable provider.
  6. Agree who handles applicable commodity and packaging notifications before the load departs.

Put that confirmation next to the final packing list. If the order consists of several loads, do not file one photograph as though it covers every unit. Give your dispatch team an instruction for a mismatch: hold the affected load and ask the named contact to resolve it. That is a more useful process than expecting the driver to decide whether an unfamiliar wooden brace is acceptable during collection.

How do you budget the UK parcels after the wholesale stock arrives?

Separate the incoming stock movement from later small deliveries to retailers. Suppose eight launch packs are already in Great Britain, each qualifying as a small domestic 2 kg parcel. The AirPost carrier-only European index, retrieved on 10 October 2026, records GB → GB from €2.96. The source quotes EUR, so this comparison stays in EUR rather than inventing a pound conversion. Eight labels at that reference amount would total €23.68.

Add €6.80 in platform fees and €18.00 at the recommended small-parcel preparation fee. The model reaches €48.48, excluding packaging and the original stock movement. The sender sets the actual preparation fee. Check the booked delivery method against each retailer’s requirement: the index minimum does not establish a particular delivery service. None of these amounts prices an international pallet, wood treatment or border notification.

Through AirPost’s local fulfilment model, a suitable local sender can prepare those individual parcel orders from an agreed stock batch. Arrange the incoming load separately and check what cartons the person can receive. The first stock-batch guide covers that quantity decision. The first-order walkthrough explains what happens to a parcel once usable stock is available.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ISPM 15 pallet stamp?

It is the official marking used to identify compliant treatment of regulated wood packaging. Inspect its components on the packaging used for your shipment.

Is there an ISPM 15 plywood exemption?

Processed-wood packaging can qualify for an exemption. Check the complete construction, including runners and braces, and the requirements of the route.

Can I print my own ISPM 15 pallet certificate?

A shop-created document does not establish authorised treatment or marking of the actual wood. Source suitable packaging and use an authorised provider when treatment work is needed.

Does an old stamp cover new repair timber?

Do not assume it does. Resolve repaired packaging through an authorised provider and retain evidence for the unit you actually dispatch.

Does AirPost book my pallet or certify its wood?

No. It provides local parcel preparation. Arrange freight, compliant bulk packaging and any relevant consignment notifications separately.
