In short

  • Mercari Best-rate shipping requires a package of 1 cubic foot or less with a longest side of 22 inches or less. On October 14, 2026, the published 5 lb UPS Ground Saver Best rate is $7.97 versus $10.99 Standard; Mercari has announced new prices effective October 19, so check which dated table you are using.
  • The size test applies to the finished package, including the box and protection.
  • Existing listings need the Best-rate size confirmation or qualifying dimensions; the lower rate does not automatically apply to every old listing.
  • Lower buyer-paid shipping can also reduce the seller fee attributable to shipping.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You can have an accurately weighed package and still select the more expensive shipping arrangement. Mercari’s Best-rate qualification depends on size as well as weight, while the fee page contains both current and upcoming tables. Start by identifying the finished parcel, its size eligibility and the rate’s effective date. This guide is for sellers using Mercari in the United States, with the published rules and prices checked on October 14, 2026.

What makes a package eligible for Mercari Best rate?

Mercari’s Best versus Standard guide sets two simultaneous limits: no more than 1 cubic foot and no side longer than 22 inches. You can confirm the smaller-than-a-shoebox prompt when that description is accurate, or enter dimensions for the size test. If dimensions exceed the limits, or the required size information is missing, Standard pricing applies. The lower rate is not limited to clothing.

One cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches. Multiply the outside length, width and height of your closed package, then check the longest side separately. A parcel can pass the volume test and fail the length test. Do not substitute the product dimensions for the package dimensions, or measure a flattened mailer before it contains the item. The carrier receives the filled shape, including any bulge caused by the protection you add.

Save the approved packaging with the listing record. A product that qualified in a close-fitting mailer may not qualify when someone substitutes a larger box. For fragile products, design the protection first and then see whether the resulting package meets the limits. Reducing essential protection to obtain a cheaper label turns a pricing decision into a damage risk. If the product needs the bigger parcel, budget that parcel honestly.

Which rates apply now, and what changes on October 19?

The Mercari fee page distinguishes “Current 2026 Shipping Rates” from “Shipping Prices Effective 10/19/2026.” Its current section says USPS prices were updated May 7. Read the section heading before copying a price into a listing worksheet. A search result can surface the upcoming table first, which does not mean those prices were already in effect on the date you researched them.

UPS economy, 5 lb, Standard rate$10.99$12.99+$2.00
Selected entries from Mercari’s dated US fee tables, checked October 14, 2026. The current table names UPS Ground Saver; the upcoming table uses SurePost. Confirm the service name and price offered on the actual listing.

Mercari’s September announcement says the October 19 changes apply to new and existing listings and to both buyer-paid and seller-paid Standard labels. Review open offers and your shipping budget near the change rather than assuming an old screenshot locks a future purchase price. Keep the effective date beside each stored rate. A useful price record explains both what was quoted and when that quote was applicable.

Do not carry an expired parcel promotion into your normal budget. The same announcement history describes a $4.99 UPS/FedEx parcel promotion that ended April 16, 2026. That is not the ordinary October parcel rate. Current envelope promotions have separate item and service conditions. A cheap trading-card envelope does not create an equivalent price for a boxed garment, so compare your actual shipping class before using a promotional amount.

Does a cheaper label help the seller when the buyer pays shipping?

Mercari’s fee page states a 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping under its current fee structure. Using the current 5 lb UPS example, switching an eligible parcel from $10.99 Standard to $7.97 Best reduces the buyer’s label amount by $3.02. The corresponding seller-fee portion falls by about $0.30. That is a different benefit from claiming the seller receives the entire $3.02 shipping saving as additional payout.

If you pay shipping yourself and keep the item price unchanged, a lower purchased label directly reduces that shipping expense. The comparison still needs the same package and service arrangement. Do not compare buyer-paid shipping on one listing with seller-paid shipping on another without including the rest of their pricing. A worksheet should show who pays the label, what the buyer sees and which amount the selling fee uses.

Check the buyer-facing total after editing a listing. Mercari separately lists a buyer protection fee, and buyers may see applicable tax at checkout. Your seller payout and the buyer’s checkout total answer different questions. Improving label eligibility can lower shipping without changing the sold item, but a parcel rate alone does not describe the entire transaction. Use the current checkout and earnings views when assessing an actual order.

How do you get the lower rate on an existing listing?

The Best-rate guide says old listings do not automatically qualify. Edit the listing and complete the size confirmation or enter qualifying package dimensions in the shipping section. Do this with the actual packaging beside you. If you relist a similar item, carry forward only a packing specification that still fits it. A different shoe size, accessory bundle or protective insert can change the completed package.

  1. Choose protection appropriate to the item and close the actual mailer or box.
  2. Weigh the whole package and measure its outside dimensions.
  3. Check volume and longest side, then open Edit on the matching listing.
  4. Confirm the size prompt truthfully or enter the measured dimensions; verify the selected weight and service.
  5. Review the shipping amount, payer and buyer-facing listing before saving.
  6. Keep the packaging specification so the eventual order is packed the same way.

If the order has already sold, use the order-specific correction process. Mercari’s label update instructions distinguish seller-paid from buyer-paid shipping. For seller-paid shipping, weight or dimensions can be edited on Order Status. For buyer-paid shipping, the stated options include covering the extra cost or canceling and editing the listing so the buyer can repurchase. Explain the issue before changing the transaction.

Can another label provider beat the marketplace rate?

Only an equivalent quote can answer that. On October 14, 2026, the AirPost US-to-US options page displayed USPS Ground Advantage from approximately $7.78, including the platform fee and excluding the agreed sender payment. That is only $0.19 below Mercari’s current $7.97 UPS Best-rate reference. They are different services and unmatched starting figures, so the subtraction does not establish a cheaper shipment.

A sender payment, materials or a different actual route quote could change the result. More fundamentally, compare protection and marketplace requirements as well as price. If your Mercari order uses a prepaid label, an independently purchased label does not inherit its shipping arrangement. AirPost’s seller page describes holding shop stock, packing and dropping off orders. Evaluate that workflow against your order requirements before treating a starting price as an alternative.

For a shop selling the same stock through multiple channels, keep shipping arrangements attached to individual orders. Do not let a global “cheapest carrier” rule replace the marketplace service without review. Use an inventory ledger to connect the sold item, packing specification and stock movement. Use average shipping cost per order when you want to compare recorded expenses across completed sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make Mercari shipping cheaper?

Check whether the finished parcel qualifies for Best rate, then update the listing with accurate size and weight information. Preserve the protection the item requires and compare currently available services.

Does Best rate apply automatically to old listings?

Mercari says existing listings need to be edited with the size confirmation or qualifying dimensions. An old listing does not become Best rate simply because the product looks small.

Why is my small package charged Standard rate?

Check the packed dimensions, longest side and missing size information. Also check weight and the selected service. A package may pass the volume test while failing the separate length test.

Are the October 19 rates already active on October 14?

No. The fee page labels them as effective October 19, 2026. Use its separately marked current section for an October 14 reference, then verify the amount when buying your label.

Can I change Mercari shipping after a sale?

The correction route depends on who pays shipping. Mercari allows seller-paid label edits on Order Status; buyer-paid corrections can require covering the difference or canceling and relisting for repurchase.
