Royal Mail jewellery insurance: cost price or selling price?

What a UK jewellery shop can claim: check Royal Mail service eligibility, cost evidence and loss deadlines before treating a cover limit as a refund.

In short

  • Send jewellery using a service that expressly accepts valuables and provides suitable compensation. Retail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm includes cover up to £750, but a shop’s loss claim is based on its evidenced acquisition or manufacturing cost, subject to the policy, rather than automatically on its selling price.
  • A higher compensation limit does not turn your expected profit into the physical value of a lost ring.
  • Retail and Business Parcels Account conditions are separate; identify how the actual label was purchased.
  • Keep the posting receipt, purchased cover level and item’s cost record together.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You refund a customer for a missing necklace, then discover that the refund and your carrier claim are different amounts. That gap matters to a jewellery shop: production work, a retail margin and delivery are separate parts of the transaction. A search for Royal Mail jewellery insurance should start with two questions. Is the jewellery eligible under the purchased service, and what financial loss does that service recognise? This guide addresses domestic UK dispatch, with retail policy clearly distinguished from account bookings.

Does Royal Mail cover jewellery with ordinary tracked postage?

Royal Mail’s retail loss and damage policies exclude valuables compensation unless an appropriate Special Delivery Guaranteed service is used. Tracking or a delivery signature does not remove that exclusion. For an account or intermediary booking, obtain the applicable product terms rather than assuming the retail policy governs your shipment. Your saved approval should identify the product and booking channel.

Describe what is actually being sent. A precious-metal pendant, a watch, a replacement strap and an empty gift pouch are different contents even if your webshop sells them in the same collection. Record material and purpose in dispatch instructions. If classification is unclear, ask for a written answer tied to that product. A shop category called accessories is too broad to settle a valuables exclusion.

Will compensation repay the necklace’s selling price?

The retail loss policy bases actual loss on acquisition, purchase or manufacturing cost, adjusted for condition, age and depreciation, and applies relevant market-value and cover limits. The customer’s sales invoice alone may therefore not establish your loss as seller. Royal Mail’s damage policy uses repair costs for repairable damage and does not add payment for the repaired item’s reduced value.

RecordWhat it establishesWhat still needs evidence

Supplier invoicePurchase cost for a matching pieceWhich parcel contained it
Production recordThe handmade item’s cost calculationAcceptance of disputed components
Posting receiptService, posting event and purchased coverContents of the sealed package

Read the relevant documents together. These evidence categories do not guarantee payment of an individual claim.

Take an explicitly hypothetical ring bought by your shop for £110 and sold for £320. The difference is £210. Refunding the buyer £320 does not make that sum your acquisition cost. Keep the purchase and sales records distinct, then apply the actual policy’s conditions. This calculation illustrates a possible margin gap; it is not a settlement prediction or a reason to declare an artificially low value.

For handmade jewellery, preserve a dated cost sheet linked to the finished piece. Show which invoices support the materials and explain your production calculation. Ask the claims team how disputed components should be evidenced rather than labelling every commercial expense manufacturing cost. Advertising, overhead and desired profit should not silently be bundled into a shipping form’s value field.

Which Special Delivery compensation level should you buy?

The direct retail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm page, checked on 10 October 2026, lists compensation levels of £750, £1,000 and £2,500. For up to 100 g its online prices are £9.85, £12.85 and £19.85 respectively. These are direct Royal Mail prices. Weigh the complete package: a presentation box can move a light piece into another weight band.

Compare the physical contents, relevant loss evidence and cover wording before choosing a level. For several pieces in one order, retain their allocation to the parcel. If the required value exceeds the suitable service’s limit, obtain a specialist arrangement accepting that jewellery. Buying two labels does not establish that a higher-value object has become acceptable or that its movement is fully covered.

Royal Mail also describes consequential-loss protection for indirect losses, such as penalties linked to important documents. That is a different question from the physical value of jewellery. Before buying any additional protection, identify its trigger and required evidence. Do not assume an option with a large headline number will compensate your retail margin.

What evidence should a jewellery shop save before dispatch?

  1. Identify the piece

Save the order, SKU, material description and identifying photographs. Include details that connect a unique piece with its invoice.

  2. Build the value file

Attach the supplier invoice or production record. Separate acquisition cost, customer price and selected cover, with an explanation for each number.

  3. Record the handover

Retain the actual posting confirmation and cover evidence. Save tracking with the order after acceptance, rather than only after printing a label.

  4. Prepare the customer instructions

Explain how to report a missing item or damaged clasp and request preservation of packaging for a damage investigation.

Photograph the chain secured inside its holder, the jewellery box and the final outer package. Capture the clasp and removable parts before closing it. Photographs support identification and the packing record; they do not certify insurer acceptance. Use a transport package suitable for the service. A decorative jewellery case needs an appropriate outer package rather than becoming the shipping container by default.

If another person packs orders, supply the approved service and item record before dispatch. Make changes visible: adding a necklace, substituting a label or changing an address alters the documented parcel. Use a short instruction for that order, followed by its accepted posting record. An unconnected folder of product photographs is much harder to use when identifying the missing contents.

When can you claim for a lost Royal Mail jewellery parcel?

For retail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm, the loss policy specifies five working days after the due delivery date before a loss claim is considered, subject to its qualifications. The loss claim deadline is 80 calendar days from posting. Later successful delivery changes the question to delay. Check the separate procedure for an account booking.

Open a case when the buyer reports the problem, even if the relevant waiting period has not elapsed. Save posting date, expected delivery date, latest tracking event and correspondence separately. Ask the booking party which claim route applies. Respond clearly about the customer’s order while the transport investigation continues, with a named next step rather than an unexplained request to keep waiting.

For a damaged necklace, ask for photographs showing both the clasp or stone setting and the package. Avoid telling the buyer to discard the damaged holder after taking one picture. Your evidence file should connect the observed damage to the condition before dispatch. A jeweller’s assessment can explain whether repair is possible and identify the affected components without making unsupported assumptions about when the damage happened.

Does a cheaper AirPost Royal Mail label include the same cover?

The AirPost GB → GB options page retrieved on 10 October 2026 showed Royal Mail 48 Tracked Medium at approximately £8.27 for the small-parcel category. This is a different product from direct Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm. Its tracking and displayed cover figure do not establish jewellery acceptance. Obtain the actual intermediary service conditions before using it for valuable contents.

For a transport-budget illustration, two compatible ordinary accessory parcels at the displayed approximate £8.27 cost approximately £16.54 in labels. This is a reference for suitable non-valuable stock such as empty fabric pouches, not a quotation for insured gold rings. Pounds are a displayed conversion and AirPost settles in euros. Recheck the offer when booking instead of treating this observation as a fixed pound tariff.

The label includes AirPost’s €0.85 platform fee. The sender’s agreed preparation charge is separate; the recommended small-parcel amount is €2.25, before materials and separately confirmed protection. With AirPost for online shops, arrange preparation of suitable accessory orders while retaining another approved process for jewellery that the listed service does not accept.

How do you separate valuable pieces from ordinary shop orders?

Assign a shipping rule to the product and its current value. Keep valuable pieces out of the ordinary-accessories queue until the service is approved. Save that approval with the SKU and review it when materials, value or booking terms change. The existing small-parcel carrier guide addresses the broader transport-cost comparison.

Offsite stock is a separate part of the journey. AirPost’s copy states that it does not insure stock at a sender’s home. Before handing over jewellery, arrange any required protection for that location and custody. A postal policy cannot be assumed to cover a necklace waiting on a shelf. The first-stock-batch guide helps you document this separate decision.

Keep your stock record at piece level where items are unique. Record who holds each necklace and when it moves from storage to dispatch. For a return, check the piece and its accessories against that record before putting it back on sale. These controls improve the explanation of an incident; they are working practices rather than substitutes for a policy that accepts the goods and their real location.

Frequently asked questions

Does Royal Mail insure jewellery sent by ordinary post?

The retail policies exclude valuables compensation unless an appropriate Special Delivery Guaranteed service is used. Check separate terms for account and intermediary bookings.

Does Royal Mail compensation include my jewellery shop’s profit?

Retail actual loss is based on acquisition, purchase or manufacturing cost with relevant adjustments and limits. The customer refund does not establish the shop’s claim amount.

Can I send expensive jewellery with Special Delivery?

Check eligibility and sufficient cover for the particular parcel. Direct by-1pm additional cover goes up to £2,500; a larger required value needs another confirmed arrangement.

What if a necklace is damaged but repairable?

Keep the item and packaging and obtain an assessment. The retail damage policy refers to repair cost; the full-loss calculation concerns a different situation.

Is AirPost Royal Mail 48 the same as Special Delivery?

No. It has its own product and booking conditions. Its displayed price and tracking do not establish Special Delivery jewellery protection.
