In short

  • Sending animal-derived dog treats from Great Britain to EU customers requires checking the veterinary export route before buying postage. Official certificate categories include 8305 for processed pet food other than canned food and 8325 for dog chews; your product classification determines which requirements apply.
  • A sealed retail bag or a low-value customer order does not itself establish that the consignment can enter the EU.
  • GOV.UK requires EU listing for exporters of pet food containing animal by-products; confirm the relevant establishments as well as the paperwork.
  • Local fulfilment can change the final delivery leg after a lawful stock movement. It does not remove the initial import or product requirements.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A British pet shop can sell a rope toy, a bag of baked treats and a rawhide chew in the same basket. Their similar checkout appearance hides different questions at the border. The toy is an accessory; the other items may fall within animal-product controls. This guide concerns commercial sales from England, Scotland or Wales to EU customers. It gives you a way to prepare a product-specific export enquiry. Northern Ireland and destinations outside the EU need their own applicable route rather than an assumed copy of this one.

What exactly is inside the dog treat you want to send?

Build a short record for each SKU before considering the destination. Include the manufacturer, ingredient list, animal species where relevant, production process, shelf-life information and how the product must be stored. Ask your supplier for information missing from the retail label. A description such as natural dog snack is useful to a shopper but too vague for deciding the veterinary category. The classification needs the actual product and its production details.

Keep different products separate in that record. Do not label every edible item as a chew simply because dogs chew it, and do not treat dried and raw as interchangeable. Share the record with the official vet or the relevant authority when checking the certificate. Their confirmation should refer to the SKU you will export. If the supplier changes an ingredient or treatment process, reopen the question instead of assuming the previous answer still covers the revised stock.

Which export certificates should your shop distinguish?

The official UK certificate finder has separate pages for processed pet food other than canned food, certificate 8305, dog chews, certificate 8325, and raw pet food for direct sale, certificate 8306. These are distinct categories, not three optional versions of the same postal form. Read the current guidance notes with your certifier.

Official categoryCertificate pageQuestion for the certifier
Processed pet food other than canned pet food8305Does the manufacturing process and composition put this SKU in this category?
Dog chews8325Is this product a dog chew for the relevant animal-product rules?
Raw pet food for direct sale8306Is this a raw product, and which handling and export conditions must be met?
GOV.UK categories checked on 10 October 2026. This table prepares an enquiry; it does not classify every product sold as a dog treat.

Save the certificate number against the confirmed category in your export record. Also record who confirmed the route and which document version they reviewed. A product catalogue can contain items falling into different categories, even when all are marketed under the same brand. Confirm whether a mixed basket can travel in your proposed arrangement before you let customers combine those SKUs. A single shopping-cart total does not resolve the certification scope.

Does the manufacturer’s approval also settle your shop’s position?

GOV.UK’s guidance on exporting animal feed or pet food says businesses exporting pet food containing animal by-products need to be listed as approved with the EU. The government also publishes lists of businesses approved to export. Check the relevant establishment and activity for your proposed movement. A supplier saying its products are export quality is not the same evidence as the applicable listing and certification.

Map the physical route: who makes the treats, who stores the batch, who prepares the consignment and who dispatches it. Send that route with your product details when asking about requirements. If your shop only resells products, describe that role accurately rather than presenting yourself as their manufacturer. Keep unresolved establishment questions open. Do not fill them with an approval number belonging to a different site simply because it appears on a supplier invoice.

Can you send a small bag as an ordinary customer parcel?

A parcel carrier accepting the weight and dimensions answers a transport question. Veterinary eligibility is a separate question. Ask about the exact commercial consignment, not what a traveller can carry for personal use. This article does not apply a personal luggage allowance to webshop orders. Likewise, sending a retail sale as a gift does not turn your export enquiry into the correct route. Describe the commercial contents and transaction consistently.

Before offering EU checkout, obtain confirmation of the required import arrangements, responsible parties and any controls for your actual destination. Agree how the certificate and related information travel with the consignment. Then ask the transport provider whether its booked service supports that arrangement. Keep the answers together. A cheap label should be the result of an eligible route, rather than the first decision to which all the paperwork is later forced to fit.

What should you give your vet before requesting certification?

  1. Identify the exact batch and product

Provide SKU, formulation, supplier, production details and batch identifiers. Separate products with different processing or ingredients.

  2. Describe the origin and destination

State the dispatch establishment, recipient, destination country and whether goods will be stored before customer delivery.

  3. Confirm the category and eligibility

Ask which certificate and establishment conditions apply. Resolve missing supplier evidence before arranging the movement.

  4. Coordinate certification and transport

Agree the supported shipping arrangement and responsibility for each document before promising dispatch to the buyer.

This is a proposed preparation sequence, not a complete official export checklist. GOV.UK’s certificate pages provide the application route and current supporting guidance. Use those documents for the required evidence and timing. Keep the certifier informed if your quantities, packing location or destination change after the initial enquiry. An answer to an earlier scenario should not silently become authorisation for a different consignment.

Would storing compliant stock inside the EU reduce delivery costs?

It may change the cost of the final customer parcel. First the stock must reach the EU through the correct import arrangement, and its storage and distribution must be suitable for the product. On the AirPost local fulfilment page, shops place their products and packing materials with a sender. That ordinary description is not a claim of veterinary certification or specialised feed storage. Confirm those requirements for the proposed stock location independently.

Consider a UK shop with a lawfully imported, appropriately stored batch already in France. A qualifying customer parcel then travels France to France rather than starting in Britain each time. The cost model still includes the original batch movement, any required certification, import administration and stock handling. Allocate the actual batch costs across the saleable units. A domestic label price alone cannot prove that moving the batch was financially worthwhile.

What does an AirPost local delivery example actually include?

The AirPost European rate index, retrieved on 10 October 2026, showed French domestic transport up to 2 kg from €4.55. This index excludes the platform fee and sender’s packing fee. For a suitably packed, eligible small order from the already compliant French stock, the calculation below uses AirPost’s recommended small-parcel fee. The French delivery leg is expressed in euros.

Illustrative FR → FR orderAmount
Transport up to 2 kg€4.55
Platform fee€0.85
Recommended small-parcel packing fee€2.25
Total of these three components€7.65
Retrieved 10 October 2026; actual sender fee is agreed individually. Excludes materials, the initial stock import and veterinary or import administration.

If your own scenario has ten such customer orders, these three delivery components total €76.50. Ten orders is an illustration, not a measured sales volume. Add the separately documented batch and packing-material costs before comparing with an eligible direct-export alternative. If you do not have the certification or import price, leave that item unpriced. Do not insert zero simply because the cost is absent from a postage page.

How do you prevent unsuitable EU orders entering checkout?

Maintain availability by product and destination while requirements remain unresolved. A customer may still be able to buy an accessory even when an animal-derived treat is unavailable on that route. Give customer support the same product distinctions used in your export file. Avoid a blanket overseas shipping claim that the fulfilment process cannot support. The existing guide to shipping from the UK to Ireland and customs documents covers the ordinary paperwork context; pet-product certification needs this additional product-specific work.

Run a small operational trial only after the route is confirmed. Review whether the correct batch, documents and service were used, and whether the recipient received the expected contents. Keep the evidence alongside the SKU record. This gives your team an actual dispatch procedure to repeat. It also makes future supplier changes visible: a revised ingredient list should prompt review before a previously eligible destination remains available by habit.

Frequently asked questions

Can you send dog treats in the mail to the EU?

For a commercial sale from Great Britain, check the product’s animal-product requirements and the carrier’s supported service. A sealed bag and an acceptable parcel weight do not establish veterinary eligibility.

Are all dog treats covered by certificate 8325?

No. GOV.UK lists dog chews separately from processed and raw pet food. Confirm the category for your formulation and manufacturing process with the certifier.

Do plant-only treats use the same certificate?

This guide does not classify a particular plant-only product. Give the exact composition and process to the appropriate authority and check the destination’s applicable requirements.

Can I use a personal pet-food allowance for an online order?

Do not assume a personal-use arrangement covers your commercial sales. Ask about the actual business consignment and declare the transaction accurately.

Does EU stock through AirPost remove import certification?

No. The initial stock movement and suitable storage still need to meet the product requirements. AirPost’s ordinary sender model is not a promise of specialised feed handling or veterinary approval.
