In short

  • When shipping flat pack furniture, assess each finished carton and keep a complete kit manifest: Parcelforce express48large publishes limits of 30 kg per parcel, 2.5 m length and 4 m combined length and girth. Flat packing reduces assembly volume, but does not make a wide panel or a heavy carton an ordinary parcel.
  • Parcelforce lists furniture, including flat-packed furniture, among goods handled manually in its network.
  • Its packaging guidance says to send separate cartons separately or use a suitable single box; do not strap boxes together.
  • Give your customer a carton list, component list and assembly version so that one delivered box is not mistaken for the complete furniture order.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A flat pack furniture order can be physically compact and still fail at delivery. The long side panels arrive, the fixings remain in a different carton, and the customer cannot assemble anything. For a UK furniture shop, the shipping unit and the sellable unit are different things. Your customer bought one complete product; your carrier may be carrying several independent parcels. Design the packing record around that difference before choosing labels.

This guide uses the current Parcelforce product and packaging pages checked on 10 October 2026. It deals with domestic UK dispatch, rather than customs or international furniture removals. The AirPost example concerns a hypothetical compact furniture kit that fits two offered medium cartons. It does not price express48large through AirPost or suggest that a small-label price covers a wardrobe panel. Every finished carton still needs acceptance under its actual booked service.

What changes when you ship furniture flat packed?

Dismantling removes the empty space inside an assembled cabinet, but leaves the dimensions of its longest rigid component. Record the panels and rails before you group them into cartons. A tall side panel remains tall even when the drawer fronts can be nested beside it. Consider the weight distribution too: placing a bag of metal brackets at one end changes how a package behaves, although the furniture’s total product weight has not changed.

Create a component map for the exact model and finish. If two visually similar rails have different hole positions, assign distinct codes. Put those codes in the packing instructions and assembly list. The person closing a carton should be able to verify its contents without building the furniture. An order-level quantity such as “one desk” is insufficient when the same product consists of panels, feet, fittings and an instruction sheet spread across different boxes.

Does a flat furniture box go through ordinary sorting?

Not necessarily. Parcelforce explicitly lists all furniture, including flat-packed furniture, in its manually handled group. It also identifies parcels longer than 1.1 m or with a second-largest dimension above 0.7 m in that group. These are handling indicators, not the express48large acceptance maxima. A carton can fall within a published size limit and still need manual handling. Do not interpret “flat” as a promise that the normal automated process applies.

This distinction matters when you set an expectation with the customer and when you ask for a service quote. Describe the contents accurately as furniture components, rather than selecting a generic description to hide the handling requirement. Keep the packing design unchanged after the quote unless you check it again. A wider panel, an uneven load or a change in outer packaging can make your previously described carton a different transport unit.

Which cartons fit the published express48large dimensions?

For a rectangular carton, the combined measure is length plus twice width plus twice height. Check it alongside the separate length and packed-weight limits. The following examples are calculations for imaginary boxes, not carrier quotations. They show why a long, relatively thin panel and a broad cabinet pack need different decisions. A result within the dimensions still leaves contents, packing, postcode and actual booking to confirm.

Finished cartonLength plus girthResult against published large dimensions
200 × 45 × 15 cm200 + 90 + 30 = 320 cmWithin 250 cm length and 400 cm combined; weight still to check
230 × 70 × 20 cm230 + 140 + 40 = 410 cmCombined measure exceeds 400 cm despite acceptable length
260 × 30 × 15 cm260 + 60 + 30 = 350 cmLength exceeds 250 cm despite acceptable combined measure
140 × 80 × 25 cm140 + 160 + 50 = 350 cmWithin large dimensions; furniture remains a manual-handling item
Own carton examples checked against the express48large product page on 10 October 2026. A 31 kg carton would exceed its per-parcel weight limit regardless of these dimension results.

Measure the closed package, including reinforcement and any bulge. Do not use the bare panel dimensions as the booked outer dimensions. A long cardboard sleeve that leaves a rail protruding is not the same package as an enclosed carton. If none of your safe configurations qualifies, obtain a suitable furniture or freight proposal with its own conditions. Buying an ordinary label cannot enlarge that product’s permitted format.

Can you tape or strap the furniture cartons together?

Parcelforce’s guidance says never to strap parcels together: put the goods in a suitable common box or send separate parcels. For a furniture kit, use an order manifest to keep the commercial relationship between boxes. It is not a physical substitute for a proper outer package. If you create a single outer carton, weigh and measure that new carton and ensure the internal arrangement cannot shift.

The same guidance describes bubble wrap as cosmetic protection only for large items and calls for stronger internal protection appropriate to their size. In your own packing plan, distinguish protection of the surface finish from restraint of a heavy component. A wrapped steel bracket can still move into a panel if it has no fixed compartment. Specify where each item goes, what separates it from adjacent parts and how the outer box closes.

Keep a photo of the completed internal layout with the component codes visible. This gives your team a reference when an order is packed by someone else. A handwritten instruction such as “wrap well” does not establish whether the fixings belong beside the panel or in a separate compartment. When the manufacturer supplies an established transport pack, assess that exact pack and preserve the instructions rather than improvising a thinner version to reach a cheaper label.

How do you label a kit with several separate boxes?

Allocate your own carton identities such as K1 panels, K2 frame and K3 fittings. Associate each with the order, product version and its transport record. Put your additional information where it does not obscure the carrier barcode. The count on your customer packing list should match the number of separately dispatched boxes, including any compact fittings carton. A kit marked “three boxes” needs a clear explanation when only two have been handed over so far.

Give the customer a concise receipt checklist: carton identifiers, contents and the matching assembly guide. This helps distinguish an unopened fittings bag from a missing fittings carton. If a box is delayed, track that unit rather than replacing the entire product immediately. Before sending a replacement, confirm the component code and version. A replacement cam lock or rail that looks similar but does not match the drilled panel can prolong the problem.

What does a compact two-box kit cost through AirPost?

Consider a hypothetical small stool kit packed into two cartons, 40 × 30 × 20 cm and 42 × 30 × 20 cm, each weighing 6 kg including protection. Both fit the displayed medium format of 45 × 35 × 30 cm up to 10 kg, subject to the booked service’s acceptance. On the UK → UK AirPost page retrieved on 10 October 2026, FedEx Economy Drop Off was €7.80 per medium carton, displayed locally as ≈ £6.61.

Two labels therefore total €15.60. Add the recommended medium-carton preparation fee twice, €6.00, and the example becomes €21.60, approximately ≈ £18.31. Each label already includes the €0.85 platform fee. Packing materials and any separately agreed work remain additional; use your sender’s actual agreed fee in the final calculation.

The sterling figures use the exchange rate embedded in that checked route page and are approximate; AirPost charges the euro amount. This calculation describes two offered medium parcels, not a bundled carrier consignment or a quote for larger panels. In particular, the Parcelforce Express 48 Drop Off listing on the route page is not labelled express48large. Its presence does not establish that the larger direct carrier product can be booked through AirPost.

For a compatible compact kit, AirPost’s shop service lets you agree preparation with a sender who holds the supplied stock and packaging. Give them the complete-kit checklist before dispatching stock. If a carton’s size changes substantially, the guide to dimensional weight helps explain another pricing check; it does not replace the service’s actual dimensions or handling rules.

What should your delivery plan say before the kit leaves?

  1. Match the customer’s product to the component map

Confirm finish, model version and all necessary fittings. Count the completed set before allocating its carton identities.

  2. Approve each finished carton

Check its outside dimensions, packed weight and selected service. Treat a long panel separately from the smaller boxes that accompany it.

  3. Connect tracking to the carton list

Retain the carrier record for each box beside its contents. Tell the customer which boxes constitute the complete kit and where to find their dispatch information.

  4. Resolve incomplete delivery by component

Identify the delayed or missing box before arranging replacements. Send the correct version of the parts and update the assembly information when necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Does flat pack furniture delivery include assembly?

Describe assembly as a separately confirmed service. A parcel containing a dismantled kit does not itself establish that someone will build it at the delivery address. Give the buyer the included instructions and the actual delivery scope.

What should flat pack furniture packaging contain?

Include a restrained, protected layout and a complete component map. Separate fittings from finished surfaces, identify similar components and match the packing list to the model version. Follow the packing conditions of the service actually purchased.

Can flat pack furniture pieces travel in separate parcels?

They can be assessed as separate transport units when each qualifies. Keep them connected in your order records and tell the customer which cartons complete the kit. Do not assume separate parcels will arrive together.

Should flat pack furniture fixings go in a spare-parts envelope?

Choose packaging that protects and contains the actual fixings under the chosen service. Record their location in the kit manifest. Small loose hardware must not be left where it can move against a finished panel or become lost when a carton is opened.
