Shipping framed art with glass: compensation explained

UK shops shipping framed art with glass need to check damage exclusions, artwork valuation and the exact service before relying on a compensation limit.

In short

  • Before shipping framed art with glass in the UK, make 2 separate checks: whether the booked service accepts the goods and whether its compensation covers the relevant damage. Parcelforce’s current exclusions explicitly list glass-containing picture frames under damage exclusions, so a headline compensation limit does not establish cover for a broken frame.
  • The same exclusion also addresses damage that broken glass causes to other contents of the parcel.
  • A collectible valuation rule can cap an otherwise eligible claim below your advertised selling price.
  • Parcelforce globalexpress has an additional artwork exclusion for loss and damage, including limited edition prints.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A framed print is sold ready to hang. If glazing breaks, replacing the glass may not resolve the order: fragments can damage the image, and a collectible edition can be difficult to replace. Before dispatch, identify the glazing, artwork and actual service. A strong box and a compensation badge alone do not answer whether your goods have cover. The official information here was checked on 10 October 2026.

Does a compensation limit mean your glass frame is covered?

No. Read the exclusions alongside the limit. On its current compensation page, Parcelforce places glass and items containing glass, including picture frames, in the list of materials excluded from compensation for damage. It also says that damage to other items caused by broken glass is not covered. A sale invoice proves what you sold; it does not remove an excluded material from the parcel. Treat loss, glazing breakage and consequential damage to the print as separate questions when asking about the proposed service.

The page also has introductory wording about inclusive domestic compensation and enhanced cover. Do not use that introduction by itself to override the specific glass damage entry, which appears under the statement about damage exclusions on all services. If the terms for your account or a broker purchase differ, ask that booking partner for the applicable written conditions. Keep the answer with the service name and the exact contents description. That is more useful than retaining a screenshot of a general “covered up to” banner with no explanation of what is inside the frame.

What should a framed-art shop ask before buying a label?

Your parcelQuestion to resolveEvidence to keep
Decorative print behind glassAre these contents accepted, and is glass damage excluded?Exact service terms and contents description
Numbered or collectible printWhat valuation rule applies if a claim is eligible?Purchase record, sale invoice and edition identification
Artwork booked on globalexpressDoes the service-specific artwork exclusion apply?Confirmed service name and exclusion wording
A frame plus other goodsWhat happens if fragments damage the other contents?Packing plan and confirmation of relevant cover
Art behind a different glazing materialAre that material and the artwork covered on this product?Revised product specification and written confirmation
A decision checklist based on Parcelforce’s published exclusions; it does not establish cover through another carrier or booking platform.

Describe the parcel plainly when making the enquiry. “Framed print with glass glazing” is more informative than “home decor”. For a signed or numbered item, say that too. Give the complete packed dimensions, weight and destination. Ask about loss and damage separately, and ask whether any added compensation changes the relevant exclusion. Buying an additional limit is useful only if the goods and event are eligible in the first place. Do not assume that a checkout allowing you to enter a higher value has checked every material in the order.

How are limited editions and collectible artworks valued?

Parcelforce publishes a collectible-items condition that limits an eligible settlement to the lower of the seller’s actual cost price or the buyer’s purchase price, subject to the service’s compensation limits. Separately, its globalexpress wording excludes artwork from loss and damage compensation, expressly including limited edition prints. Those are different rules. The first determines valuation where an eligible claim exists; the second can exclude the artwork on that named service. A valuation document cannot restore cover where the service excludes the item.

Build an artwork record before dispatch. Put the order reference beside the edition number, signature, image title and any purchase documentation. Photograph condition in a way that shows the actual item rather than a catalogue image. For a reproduction, identify the paper, print size and framing specification so you can produce the same replacement if needed. For an original, do not treat a generic retail description as proof that another item would be equivalent. Keep documents accessible to the person responsible for the eventual enquiry or claim.

A shop may accept a documented exposure for a replaceable frame while seeking specialist transport and insurance for an original. Obtain a quotation covering the object, journey and commercial terms before making that decision. Keep it separate from an ordinary parcel label. The value and eligibility of your artwork need their own supporting record; the word collectible does not establish a settlement amount.

Can better packaging remove the glass exclusion?

Packaging and compensation address different problems. Better protection can reduce avoidable damage, but it does not rewrite the service’s contents exclusions. Parcelforce’s packaging guidance says that fragile objects should be individually protected and boxed, then placed in a larger box. It also warns that “fragile” labels are not a substitute for protection and that orientation is not guaranteed. Plan for a frame to be turned and stacked during ordinary handling. A package that works only when it stays upright depends on a condition that the stated guidance does not promise.

Work with your framer on a packing design suited to the particular glazing and artwork. Support the frame, protect its corners and prevent the enclosed package from moving within the outer box. Keep any protection from pressing on a delicate image surface. Try the opening procedure with a sample: the customer should not need to run a knife close to the print. Photograph the completed inner arrangement and the closed outer carton. These records explain how the goods travelled, but remain evidence of packing rather than a certificate of compensation cover.

What does the UK AirPost price reference actually include?

For a conditional cost example, assume your fully protected frame fits within the displayed small format of 35 × 25 × 15 cm and weighs no more than 5 kg. On AirPost’s UK → UK route page retrieved on 10 October 2026, Parcelforce Worldwide Express 48 Drop Off is displayed at approximately £11.54. That is a label reference for the stated format and route. It is usable for your proposed order only after confirming acceptance of the actual contents and the booking conditions; it does not establish damage cover for glass.

Ten qualifying labels at that displayed approximation give about £115.40. The route page says prices already include AirPost’s platform fee of €0.85; sterling is an indicative conversion and payment is in euros. Sender preparation is additional: the small-parcel recommendation is €2.25, while the actual fee is agreed. Keep that euro amount separate from the sterling display rather than adding two currencies as if they were one. Packaging and any specialist cover still need a separate budget.

Do not apply the small-format price to a large frame because the print itself is small or light. The protective carton is what must fit. Nor should you compare the reference with a specialist artwork quotation on label price alone: the quotation might include different handling and a different insurance arrangement. Write down the contents acceptance, covered events, valuation basis and handover method beside each quote. That makes a cost difference meaningful. An unsupported assumption about cover can be much more consequential than a modest label saving.

What records help if a framed print arrives broken?

  1. Keep the artwork identity

Store the item description, edition details, invoice and condition photographs against the order. Record the actual booked service and applicable terms before the parcel leaves.

  2. Capture the complete packing

Show the frame protection, inner box, outer box and closed parcel. Include the measurements and weight used in booking, so the record describes the shipment rather than just the item.

  3. Request evidence without discarding packaging

Parcelforce asks customers to retain the parcel and packaging until a claim is settled. Ask for photographs of the outside, label, inner protection and damage. Broken glass needs careful handling; do not ask the customer to remove fragments for a better picture.

  4. Separate the customer solution from the carrier enquiry

Decide how to address the customer’s order while checking claim eligibility with the booking partner. A customer-service replacement decision does not by itself prove the carrier owes the same amount.

The existing guide to a parcel lost or damaged as a shop explains the wider order workflow. For framed art, add the glazing and artwork details to that record. Be aware that Parcelforce’s general settlement wording excludes labour and other consequential loss and says postage is not refunded for damage claims. Do not promise that every cost of restoring the customer’s order will be recoverable. Resolve the relevant exclusion and the claim procedure for your service before treating a possible settlement as part of your budget.

Can a local sender handle framed art for your shop?

With AirPost for online shops, you can agree for a suitable sender to hold stock and prepare orders. For framed goods, confirm storage space, the packing design and the ability to handle the protected carton. Give the sender a contents-specific instruction and a rule for pausing damaged stock or a changed frame specification. Keep the service and cover decision with your shop. A local sender can follow a packing recipe; their involvement does not convert a glass exclusion into insurance for your artwork.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship framed art with glass through a parcel carrier?

Check acceptance with the actual booking partner using the complete contents description. Acceptance and compensation are separate. The Parcelforce damage exclusion quoted here means you should not rely on its headline limit for glass damage.

Does shipping insurance cover a broken picture frame?

Only if the applicable policy or service terms cover the goods and event. Read glass exclusions, related contents damage and any valuation conditions before purchasing additional cover.

How much does shipping framed art with glass cost?

Price the finished protective carton on the actual route. The article’s UK label example fits a stated small format and is conditional on contents acceptance. Add preparation, materials and any confirmed specialist cover separately.

Are limited edition prints covered on globalexpress?

Parcelforce explicitly includes limited edition prints in the globalexpress artwork exclusion for loss and damage. Review a different confirmed transport and cover arrangement when that exclusion makes the service unsuitable.

Can the recipient throw away the box after a damage report?

Parcelforce asks for the parcel and packaging to be kept until the claim is settled. Obtain the relevant evidence and tell the recipient when the booking partner confirms the packaging is no longer needed.
