In short

  • For shipping to Malta from Germany, DHL Paket gives a 5–7 working-day orientation and requires direct addressing to the recipient. Price each webshop order from its finished box and the actual service quote; add packing work and stock transport separately.
  • DHL Paket warns that using a DHL Service Point or locker as the recipient address can cause a paid return.
  • DHL Express dimensional weight is a different pricing check from the weight bands of a postal parcel.
  • A German forwarding address creates an additional transport leg; delivery there does not prove delivery to your Maltese customer.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A small market does not automatically need its own stock location. If your shop already holds inventory in Germany, the first question is whether a suitable cross-border parcel service can carry your real orders at a workable cost. Malta makes the answer depend on more than a country name: the package, the chosen transport product, the receiving address and the work before handover all matter. Build that calculation before adding a flat Malta charge to checkout.

Are you pricing a direct shipment or a forwarding journey?

For a direct shipment, your shipping label names the customer’s confirmed Maltese address. DHL’s Malta country page explicitly requires direct recipient addressing and excludes a DHL Service Point or locker address. Check that requirement at service selection. A locker available in another country, or a domestic option in your shop integration, does not make it an acceptable address for this product.

Forwarding is a separate journey. MaltaPost SendOn offers foreign receiving addresses, including Germany, for onward forwarding. If a customer supplies that address, identify the initial destination and the party buying the onward leg. Your German label and its delivered event describe the first shipment. Keep the customer’s original instruction with the order so your support team can explain which part of the journey it can investigate.

Do not compare a German domestic label with a complete Germany-to-Malta quote and call the difference a saving. The forwarding charge, handling and responsibility for the onward movement would still need to be included. Equally, do not treat a forwarding depot as your own fulfilment partner. A receiving service for customers’ purchases does not by itself agree to store your shop inventory, pick new orders or handle your product variants.

Why can a light Malta order have a much higher chargeable weight?

DHL Express uses the greater of physical and volumetric weight. Its 2026 Germany service guide gives the calculation in centimetres: length × width × height divided by 5,000 for each piece. This is an Express calculation. Do not import it into a DHL Paket quote unless that particular service has the same documented billing rule. Similar carrier names do not make their pricing methods interchangeable.

The following is a packaging calculation, not a shipment forecast or a carrier offer. It compares two possible outer boxes for the same 2 kg packed weight. Only use the smaller box if the product remains properly protected. Compressing fragile goods to hit a price band is not a sound packaging decision. Your final quoted weight can also be rounded under the carrier’s billing rules, so the calculated result still needs an actual service quotation.

Computed examples using the formula in DHL Express Germany’s 2026 guide. No transport price or availability is inferred from the calculation.

Measure across the closed box, including a bulging side or outer protective layer. Record the packaging version against the product so a remote packer can repeat it. A product photo does not show the finished shipping dimensions. If customers can combine items, make a separate packing instruction for those combinations. The box chosen for a single item should not silently remain the default for a larger order that needs more protection or space.

Express may make sense for a customer who needs a service with a different delivery commitment, but that decision requires a postcode-specific offer. The DHL Express sizes and weights page describes product limits and possible surcharges; it does not prove every timed product is available to every Maltese address. Quote the finished shipment, read the service description and keep the purchased conditions with the order.

Which costs stay outside the transport quote?

If you arrange packing through AirPost, the platform charge is €0.85 per shipment. Adding the recommended small-parcel packing fee of €2.25 gives €3.10 before the label, packaging materials and stock transport. These AirPost constants were checked on 14 October 2026. The packing fee is recommended; use the fee actually agreed with the person handling your orders.

Keep those amounts attached to the work they pay for. The label buys a transport service. The packing fee pays the agreed preparation and handover task. Sending inventory to the packer is another movement, with its own packaging and transport costs. Special inserts, product assembly or an unusual handling requirement need an explicit agreement. If you compare this setup with doing everything yourself, include the actual tasks you would otherwise perform.

Your order worksheet should therefore contain the purchased label, agreed packing fee, platform charge, materials and the attributable cost of getting stock to the German pack location. If a displayed label offer already includes the platform charge, avoid adding it twice. Use actual stock movements when assigning inbound cost; a hoped-for future sales volume is not evidence that the current stock shipment has paid for itself. Keep unsold stock visible in your calculation.

The result is a cost for one fulfilled order, not automatically the shipping amount you show the buyer. Your commercial policy can absorb part of that cost, but your internal worksheet should still show it. Test a single-item basket and a combined basket against the same policy. The article on average shipping cost per order explains the broader accounting; the Malta check starts with the real package and confirmed route.

Does the EU route remove every customs question?

The European Commission’s territorial scope table places Malta within the EU customs and VAT territories. That helps distinguish an ordinary German shipment of goods in free circulation from an import arriving from outside the EU. It does not turn every sale on an EU website into an intra-EU dispatch. Establish where the goods physically leave from and their customs status before deciding what documents the route needs.

A supplier that sends straight from a non-EU warehouse creates a different route from your German inventory. The shop’s business address does not change that movement. Ask the fulfilment source to confirm the actual departure location and retain the relevant purchase and import records. Do not print a German return address and assume that this alone proves German dispatch or completed import clearance. Those are separate facts in your shipping file.

The absence of ordinary import clearance on a qualifying EU route also does not answer whether the carrier accepts your contents. Check restricted products separately, especially goods whose packaging or batteries may affect the service. Describe the actual item to the selected carrier rather than using a vague catalogue category. If the service rejects it, pause that product’s Malta offer until you have a documented compatible route. A successful quote for an empty box proves little about acceptance of its contents.

What can you promise about dispatch and delivery to Malta?

DHL Paket’s Malta page gives 5–7 working days as an orientation, not a guaranteed delivery date. Your preparation period precedes transport. State when the order will be handed over and describe the carrier estimate separately. If stock has not reached the German packer, the order cannot yet follow the advertised dispatch routine. An order accepted in your shop and a label created in software are also earlier events than physical carrier handover.

For a date-sensitive order, inspect the actual available service instead of promising that a standard parcel will arrive by the occasion. Ask your packer about the next accepted handover, check current service alerts and consider whether your checkout wording needs a different estimate. Keep the chosen service name in the order record. Without it, a support colleague may compare your standard postal parcel with an Express estimate and give the customer an explanation that does not fit.

Track separately whether the carrier has received the parcel, whether it is moving internationally and whether it is ready for final delivery or collection. If a buyer supplies a forwarding address, make that distinction explicit in your support response. You can give the tracking number for the first leg and the confirmed receiving address without inventing an onward arrival date. Work from the purchased service and the latest official status, not from a different customer’s past delivery.

Do you need Maltese inventory before opening this shipping zone?

Malta is not an AirPost origin country in the supported-country list checked for this article. Do not base your launch on an assumed Maltese AirPost packer or an unverified domestic label. A pack location in a supported origin such as Germany can be investigated instead. That still requires the actual Germany-to-Malta service to be available for your package and address; availability is not established by this article or by the recommended handling fee.

Before adding the zone, complete one written operational decision: direct address or forwarding instruction, permitted products, measured packaging, confirmed service and a receiving address for returned parcels. Keep return transport separate from the outward quote. The guide to returns without a warehouse helps arrange reception and inspection. With those decisions recorded, you can assess the market using real order costs without first promising an unsupported local warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

How long does shipping from Germany to Malta take?

DHL Paket lists 5–7 working days as a transport orientation. Add your preparation time and confirm current conditions for the purchased product. An Express offer has its own service terms and must be checked separately.

Can I address a DHL Paket order to a locker in Malta?

DHL’s Malta country page requires direct recipient addressing and warns against using a DHL Service Point or locker address. Check any other receiving arrangement with the specific service before buying a label.

Why is my Express quote based on more than the parcel weighs?

DHL Express compares actual and volumetric weight and uses the higher value. Measure the finished box and calculate centimetre length × width × height ÷ 5,000, then check the service’s billing increments.

Is a German forwarding address the same as shipping directly to Malta?

No. It identifies a first receiving leg and a separate onward service. Confirm who buys the forwarding and which tracking event belongs to each journey before comparing total cost.

What should I add for AirPost packing?

The recommended small-parcel fee plus the platform charge totals €3.10 before transport and materials, using constants checked on 14 October 2026. Agree the actual packing fee and confirm the route; this amount is not a Malta label quote.
