Shipping to Iceland: what does your customer pay after postage?

In short

  • A shipping label is only part of your Iceland delivery cost: most goods carry 24% import VAT, and postal clearance or receiving charges may be additional. Pósturinn distinguishes private shipments below ISK 40,000 from higher-value shipments and commercial imports, so there is no single valid all-in price for every webshop order.
  • Its receiving calculator asks for the product price plus shipping, expressed in Icelandic króna.
  • A parcel sent from an EU country is not automatically free of Icelandic import charges.
  • Compare the amount paid by your customer as well as the amount paid for your label.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You can offer low postage and still leave an Icelandic customer with an unwelcome bill. The parcel may need a declaration, import VAT and a postal receiving service before collection. Those amounts belong to different parties and can be triggered by different facts. A webshop needs to explain the likely payment process before the order leaves its premises.

The useful comparison is a landed-cost worksheet for your actual product and service. This guide covers parcels entering Iceland through the postal system, particularly sales to private individuals. A courier’s clearance arrangement needs its own quotation. Do not copy a postal fee into a courier budget just because the destination and product are identical.

Which charges belong beside your outbound postage quote?

Iceland Revenue and Customs describes import charges as potentially including duties, excise, VAT and other charges. Pósturinn’s receiving guide likewise warns that the delivered cost can exceed the seller’s listed price. There is no basis for converting that warning into a universal duty percentage: the product classification and any applicable relief determine the result.

Keep currencies and payer visible. This is a cost map, not an offer for an Iceland parcel or a statement that every row applies to every shipment.

Assign a payer to each row. If your customer pays on arrival, say so beside your checkout delivery charge. If you arrange a service with prepaid import costs, confirm which charges the carrier accepts and how it obtains the required information. A prepaid transport label by itself does not establish that destination taxes are prepaid.

Why does the ISK 40,000 boundary matter to a webshop?

Pósturinn’s customs terms describe simplified E-3 clearance for qualifying private shipments with total value below ISK 40,000. They require an E-1 declaration for private shipments exceeding that value and for commercial import goods. The terms define total value to include the goods, shipping and other shipment costs. Ask the operator to confirm treatment at the boundary rather than rounding a parcel down.

The distinction between a private buyer and a business importer matters as much as the threshold. A retail sale to an individual and a stock carton for an Icelandic reseller should not share one declaration assumption. A small commercial stock transfer does not become eligible for private simplified handling merely because the invoice amount is low.

Create separate workflows in your order records. The retail workflow can ask for the information needed by the customer and postal operator. The wholesale or stock workflow should identify the business importer, the declaration arrangement and its supporting documents. Keeping them apart prevents you promising consumer-style handling on a commercial consignment.

Does a lighter parcel always mean fewer receiving fees?

Not automatically. Pósturinn’s calculator states that its shipping fees apply to packages weighing 2 kg or less and/or fitting through mail slots. Its displayed inputs also distinguish Europe from the rest of the world. Weight, format and origin therefore need to remain visible when you compare postal receiving costs, even after your outbound label has been purchased.

Use the closed carton’s measurements. Product weight excludes tape, protective material and the box. Also distinguish the actual transport origin from the shop’s company address. A company based elsewhere might dispatch from Europe, but that fact must match the movement your carrier books. Do not select a region solely because your website displays prices in euros.

The calculator presents an estimate rather than a final customs assessment. Enter the correct product category and retain the result with the date, then compare it with the operator’s final request. If a new fee appears, first identify whether it is clearance, delivery, storage or tax. Treating every difference as extra postage makes the next cost estimate harder to improve.

Can EU dispatch remove Icelandic VAT or customs duty?

EU dispatch alone is insufficient. Pósturinn explains that preferential customs treatment can reduce or remove duty for qualifying goods where there is a trade agreement, but the importer must request it and provide origin evidence. The warehouse address is a dispatch fact; the product’s qualifying origin is a separate fact.

The Icelandic tax authority lists standard VAT rates of 24% and 11%. Pósturinn’s import guide identifies books, newspapers, magazines and certain food as examples of reduced-rate goods, with exclusions. Classify your own product rather than borrowing the reduced rate because it resembles something on that list. Duty preference and VAT treatment should occupy different cells in your worksheet.

For mixed baskets, preserve separate descriptions and quantities. Do not replace them with a generic word such as accessories if the contents need different classifications. Your customer should be able to match the parcel invoice to the original order. Clear information also helps you explain why two orders with similar postage can have different destination assessments.

What documentation can prevent a clearance hold?

Iceland Revenue and Customs requires import documents before goods leave the transporter’s storage and states a submission limit of 3 months from vessel arrival. Its document list includes an invoice, transport or freight information, origin evidence where preference is claimed and any applicable permit. That limit is not a delivery target and does not mean a customer should wait until the final week.

Its invoice requirements include seller and buyer details, quantities, packing and weight information, individual article prices, currency and relevant sale or delivery terms. Prepare these from the real order. A payment total without a contents breakdown may leave the recipient unable to explain the shipment. Keep freight separately visible where the document requires it.

Pósturinn advises customers to provide a receipt, payment confirmation or value information needed for clearance. Its receiving guidance also explains that automatic payment registration can reduce costs and speed the process. You can point customers to that option without requiring them to share their postal account credentials with your shop. Give them the invoice and tracking reference promptly.

How do you add AirPost preparation without inventing an Iceland rate?

Using AirPost’s shared constants checked on 12 October 2026, preparing one small parcel carries a recommended sender fee of €2.25 plus the platform charge of €0.85. For two separate qualifying preparation jobs the combined subtotal is €6.20. This is a euro-denominated preparation example at a supported dispatch location, excluding transport, packaging and all Icelandic charges. The agreed sender fee may differ.

The AirPost carrier-only European index checked on that date does not contain an Iceland destination row. This article therefore establishes no AirPost label price or service availability to Iceland. Obtain a real transport quote before using the example in a customer promise. A missing destination reference is a reason to leave transport pending, not to copy Norway’s rate.

The AirPost fulfilment model can help organise packing from an available origin: a shop sends an agreed stock batch to a person who packs and hands over orders. It does not provide an Icelandic importer automatically. For the broader planning distinction, read domestic versus international parcel costs. For a separately documented neighbouring market, the Norway cost guide uses its own rules and rates.

Frequently asked questions

How much does shipping to Iceland cost for a webshop customer?

Add the real transport quote to the applicable import taxes and operator charges. Most goods carry 24% VAT, but the product rate, declaration type and service prevent one universal delivered price.

Is a parcel from the EU to Iceland customs free?

Do not assume that from its dispatch address. Qualifying preferential duty treatment requires the relevant origin evidence and request; VAT is a separate consideration.

Does the ISK 40,000 limit include postage?

Pósturinn’s customs terms include shipment costs in total value. Confirm the exact clearance treatment with the operator, particularly at the boundary or for commercial goods.

Can I use private E-3 clearance for wholesale stock?

Pósturinn’s terms require E-1 for commercial imports. A low-value stock batch should not be presented as a private consumer shipment.

Does AirPost publish a verified Iceland label price here?

No. The checked index has no Iceland destination row. The AirPost calculation prices only illustrative origin preparation, and a transport service still needs confirmation.
