In short

  • For shipping goods to Gibraltar after 15 July 2026, Royal Mail’s current bulletin directs postal items via Spain rather than direct Gibraltar air transport and warns of longer UK transit times. Obtain a current service and customs quote: a pre-July postage price or import-fee table does not establish the complete cost today.
  • The government’s July update describes UK inbound mail travelling by road through France and Spain, while maintaining postal services.
  • For transitional reassessment, transport must actually have started before 15 July; an earlier order, invoice or payment alone does not qualify.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A customer in Gibraltar asks your webshop why their parcel has scans in Spain. Your old delivery note says direct UK airmail, and an old fee page appears to show a simple import allowance. Both records need checking against the arrangements introduced in July 2026. The current seller decision combines route, delivery promise, customs treatment and the evidence you retain about dispatch.

This guide uses official information opened on 13 October 2026. It addresses goods parcels, rather than documents or a passenger’s shopping bag. It gives you an order review process and an AirPost origin-preparation calculation, without presenting an unverified Gibraltar carrier rate. The aim is a quote your shop can actually support and explain when the customer follows the tracking.

Why can a UK parcel travel through France and Spain?

Royal Mail’s international incident bulletin records a Gibraltar update dated 16 July 2026. It says the agreement prevents commercial air transport directly to and from Gibraltar from carrying commercial freight, while letters and documents can still be handled. For postal items it describes road routing via Spain and warns that UK-to-Gibraltar transit is likely to increase.

Gibraltar’s government subsequently explained the movements in its 31 July mail update: UK inbound mail had travelled by road through France into Spain before crossing into Gibraltar. It said postal services continued under the new arrangements. A scan in either transit country is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the goods were addressed to the wrong customer.

For customer support, separate an expected transit location from a specific delivery exception. Look at the carrier’s status message and the service actually purchased. If it says documents are required, answer that request. If it only shows a transit scan, explain the documented route without inventing an arrival date. The same country scan can appear during a normal movement or alongside an unresolved customs action.

Check the current bulletin again when you book. The government says operational options will continue to be refined, so this description should not become a permanent claim that every carrier uses the same path. Keep the update date on your own service note. Do not apply a postal routing notice automatically to a separately quoted commercial freight product.

Does the new border arrangement make Gibraltar ordinary EU delivery?

The Commission’s current territorial table describes designated Spanish customs offices applying EU import and export customs rules for Gibraltar’s commercial goods. It does not place Gibraltar in the EU VAT area. A route through Spain therefore needs a proper customs and tax decision; you cannot resolve it by changing the order’s destination country to Spain.

Keep the real destination, product origin and dispatch location visible in the operator’s quote request. Ask who arranges the applicable procedure and whether the price includes that work. Where the operator needs commodity information, provide it for every product in the carton. A store category or a broad description such as accessories may not identify the actual goods accurately enough.

The government’s business guidance published in June covers transaction tax, duties and transit arrangements under the new framework. Use the current product-specific assessment for the particular order rather than borrowing a historic percentage from a postal FAQ. A transport charge and a destination tax answer different questions. Keep both, and any agent service charge, identifiable in the landed-cost worksheet.

Which old price references should you stop reusing?

The Royal Gibraltar Post Office E-Post FAQ still displays receiving-charge wording introduced in November 2020. That page can help identify the provenance of an old checkout rule, but it cannot by itself establish how an October 2026 commercial parcel is assessed under the new regime. Retire any automatic price promise that relies only on that historic wording.

Do not simply replace one remembered fee with another. Ask your operator for the current service quote and an explanation of separately assessed charges. Your comparison should name the service, destination, parcel format, document work and payer. If a quote does not identify its customs scope, it is not yet a complete delivered-cost comparison for your webshop.

Could an earlier dispatch qualify for reassessment?

The government’s 4 September public guidance explains a refund process for qualifying consignments whose transport started before 15 July 2026 but ended afterwards. Where transaction tax was paid under the later regime, Customs can consider reassessment against the earlier import-duty regime. Any refund is the verified overpayment, rather than an automatic refund of every charge.

The guidance makes the evidence distinction explicit: an order, invoice or payment before the cutoff is insufficient unless movement actually began before it. For a seller, that means preserving the transport event rather than only the checkout timestamp. A carrier collection record, consignment note or reliable tracking record can describe an event the sales invoice cannot prove.

When reviewing a historical order, link the invoice and contents to the transport evidence. A dispatch timestamp without a shipment reference may not identify the goods under review. A shipment record without the invoice may leave the transaction unclear. Send a coherent record to the recipient or clearing agent handling the claim, and retain the assessment rather than promising approval yourself.

For orders dispatched now, this transitional route is not a pricing strategy. It concerns movements meeting the historical conditions. Your current quote should use the current treatment for the actual order. Keeping the old reassessment folder separate from new dispatch instructions prevents staff applying an exceptional refund process to ordinary October shipments.

How much can you budget for AirPost packing before the transport quote?

At a supported AirPost dispatch origin, one qualifying small parcel has a recommended preparation fee of €2.25. Combined with the €0.85 platform fee, the subtotal is €3.10. The constants were retrieved on 13 October 2026. This establishes the illustrative origin-work component; the sender’s agreed fee may differ and carrier transport remains unquoted.

For two separately prepared small parcels, the same components total €6.20. You still need both actual labels and the applicable document arrangement. Splitting does not make Gibraltar’s destination rules disappear. If you compare an AirPost displayed label later, its platform charge is already included and must not be counted twice.

Make the budget explicit: euro-denominated origin work, the accepted transport quote in its stated currency, separately quoted customs services and the destination assessment with its payer. Convert only using a recorded basis when you need a common margin figure. There is no verified AirPost service availability to Gibraltar in this calculation, and preparation alone is not a delivered-price offer.

The AirPost seller model lets a shop agree stock and packing with a sender at an available origin. It does not appoint a Gibraltar customs agent. If that sender prepares your order, provide the commercial records and the supported handover instructions. For the broader stock-location question, read domestic versus international shipping costs.

What should your delivery message tell a Gibraltar customer?

Explain the service purchased, the operator’s current delivery estimate and whether the buyer must complete a customs action. Avoid retaining an old airmail deadline when the operator has warned of changed transit. You can explain that the route may pass through Spain without promising how many days a particular border stage will take.

The government’s mail update encourages customers to use the free E-Post service for collection notifications, reminders and secure online payment. You can point the buyer to that official service while supplying their invoice and tracking details. A notification is still an operational request to read, rather than proof that every amount shown matches a historic fee page.

If collection or payment is pending, contact the buyer with the factual status and the relevant reference. Do not call the parcel lost while it awaits a documented action. For a cost query, ask for the actual charge breakdown and route it to the operator responsible for that component. The existing European delivery-time guide explains the difference between a route estimate and an individual parcel promise.

Frequently asked questions

Can UK shops still ship goods to Gibraltar?

The government’s July update says postal services continue, with changed routing and procedures. Confirm current service acceptance and customs requirements for your goods before booking.

Why is my Gibraltar parcel in Spain?

The current official postal updates describe UK inbound mail travelling through Spain. A transit scan alone does not establish misdelivery; check the actual status message.

Can I rely on an old Gibraltar import-fee table?

Use a current consignment assessment. The E-Post FAQ retains wording introduced in 2020, which alone does not establish treatment under the July 2026 regime.

Does ordering before 15 July qualify for transitional treatment?

Not by itself. The September government guidance requires evidence that transport or movement of the goods actually began before 15 July 2026.

Does local packing remove Gibraltar customs work?

No. It changes the preparation location. The real destination, goods and supported transport determine what customs work and charges remain.
