In short

  • Calculate the UPS UK fuel surcharge using the percentage for the booked service and effective week, multiplied by its eligible transport and accessorial charges. UPS changes the surcharge on Mondays and normally uses reference fuel prices from 2 weeks earlier; the eligible base can include more than the transport charge.
  • UPS Standard uses a diesel reference, while Express and Expedited use a jet-fuel reference. The rates are separate.
  • UPS lists additional handling, large-package, remote-area and certain other charges as fuel-eligible where applicable.
  • A total-price carrier quote may already contain fuel. Keep packing fees and platform costs outside an assumed UPS calculation unless your actual agreement says otherwise.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Your shop charges the customer for delivery, but the carrier invoice arrives with a fuel line that you cannot reproduce. The first question is not whether diesel became more expensive this week. It is which percentage applied to this service, and which invoice lines were included in its calculation. Those two inputs explain the charge. A correct percentage applied to the wrong subtotal still produces a wrong result. This guide focuses on a UK seller checking parcel invoices and setting a delivery budget from confirmed costs.

Which UPS service and week does the fuel rate belong to?

Start with the exact service on the shipping record. The UPS UK fuel page separates Standard from Express and Expedited. Keep the service name, origin, destination and effective rate period together. A rate saved for another service is not a suitable substitute, even if both labels carry the UPS name. When checking an older invoice, use the historical period rather than the value shown when you open the page today.

The public history section is described as a 90-day history. At our check on 14 October 2026, the accessible page showed the history headings but did not expose populated percentage rows. We therefore do not publish a supposedly current UK percentage here. Obtain the dated figure from the live UPS table or your contract provider and save that evidence. You can still check the method and eligible base before the number arrives. A missing live row is not a reason to reuse an unrelated rate from a search snippet.

For a weekly invoice covering a rate boundary, group the underlying shipments by the applicable period. Ask the billing party how it assigns the effective rate when the shipping record and collection date differ. Do not silently use the invoice issue date for every parcel. That document may cover earlier activity. Preserve the relevant shipping dates so that an explanation can be tied to individual tracking numbers. The task is to reproduce the billed shipment, not to average several weeks into a rate that UPS never published.

Why does today’s fuel price not explain this week’s surcharge?

For Standard, UPS describes a diesel reference from two weeks earlier, including duties and taxes, with changes effective each Monday. The source is the European Commission’s petroleum-price reporting. The Weekly Oil Bulletin publishes consumer petroleum prices and provides separate downloads with and without taxes. If you are tracing the input, use the series named by UPS. A tax-exclusive figure or a local forecourt price answers a different question.

For Express and Expedited, UPS identifies US Gulf Coast kerosene-type jet fuel, again with a two-week reference lag. The official US Energy Information Administration spot-price page is the source linked by UPS. Its petroleum series use their stated units; a diesel figure in euros per thousand litres is not interchangeable with a jet-fuel figure in dollars per gallon. Matching the source, series and unit comes before any calculation of a surcharge band.

The reference data helps you understand the mechanism, but it is not your invoice by itself. UPS says that its posted actual surcharge percentages apply for the specified periods and that delayed reference reporting may lead it to use an earlier week. Save the posted rate as your billing evidence. Use source fuel data to investigate a question about the index, rather than to create your own replacement UPS rate. That avoids arguing about an input when the unexplained amount is really caused by a different charge in the base.

Which extra invoice lines can also attract fuel?

The 2026 UPS UK service guide identifies additional handling, large-package, remote-area and residential charges as fuel-eligible, alongside demand and surge charges. The UK fuel webpage also lists peak charges and the UK Border Fee. Confirm which ones actually occur on the shipment and what your agreement includes. A fee category appearing on a public list does not prove that you owe that fee for every parcel. It establishes why checking only the main transport line may leave the fuel amount unexplained.

Use the formula fuel amount = applicable percentage × eligible base. Write the percentage as a decimal for the calculation. Build the base from the relevant invoice lines, rather than applying fuel to the amount your customer paid for delivery. That customer contribution may include your own margin, packing or a subsidy from the product sale. It is a commercial decision by your shop, not a statement of UPS’s eligible transportation and accessorial charges.

A useful diagnostic is the implied base: billed fuel amount divided by the applicable decimal percentage. Compare that result with the transport-only subtotal and then with the transport-plus-eligible-charges subtotal. If the second explains the charge, you have located the missing component. If neither does, request the actual calculation from the billing party. Treat any rounding method as a separate input to confirm; the public page does not specify every contract’s aggregation and rounding practice. Avoid declaring a small discrepancy an error before resolving that detail.

How can you budget fulfilment without charging fuel twice?

AirPost’s platform fee is €0.85 and its recommended small-parcel preparation fee is €2.25. Together those two components are €3.10 per order, using the constants checked on 14 October 2026. The recommendation is a starting value; you agree the actual fee with the person preparing orders. These euro figures describe the source amounts in AirPost’s accounting currency. They are not invented pound equivalents. Keep a GBP carrier invoice in GBP until you have a documented conversion basis for your comparison.

Let your confirmed carrier total be transport plus applicable accessorials plus fuel. Add the separately agreed preparation and platform components to that completed total for your fulfilment budget. Do not apply the UPS fuel percentage to the resulting fulfilment sum just because all components belong to one customer order. In the AirPost example, doing so would unnecessarily put the preparation-and-platform amount into the assumed carrier base. Conversely, adding a new fuel calculation to an already inclusive label quote may count the same fuel twice.

Through AirPost’s local fulfilment arrangement, you send agreed stock to a person near customers, who prepares orders and hands parcels over at a parcel point. That changes how preparation and dispatch are organised. It does not prove that a chosen carrier has no fuel charge or that every UPS service is offered for the route. Compare the actual available label and its stated price components. The preparation example gives you a separate cost layer, not a replacement fuel-surcharge schedule.

For a wider route comparison, use parcel shipping costs in Europe as background and then obtain the price for your real parcel. A country-level minimum and a contracted UPS invoice are different evidence. Keep that distinction when deciding what to charge customers. The delivery budget should use the complete confirmed cost of the route you will actually book. A lower reference number from another service does not resolve a fuel line on this shipment.

What should you send when a fuel line still does not reconcile?

  1. Identify the billed shipment

Include tracking number, booked UPS service, origin, destination and the billing provider.

  2. Attach the effective percentage

Save the dated published or contracted rate and ask how the shipment was assigned to that period.

  3. List the candidate base

Show transport and each potentially eligible extra separately, with the actual billed amounts.

  4. Request the calculation

Ask which lines, percentage, adjustments and rounding produced the fuel amount for this shipment.

Make the request narrowly reproducible. You do not need to argue that all fuel surcharges are unfair or send your entire shop history. A tracking number, dated rate and short line-by-line calculation allow the provider to check the disputed amount. If you bought the label through an intermediary, use that intermediary’s billing procedure and agreement. Its retail total may differ from a direct UPS account charge. Record the answer so that future orders using the same service can be budgeted from the correct inclusion rule.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the UPS UK fuel surcharge change?

UPS describes weekly adjustments effective on Monday. Keep the applicable week with each shipment and retain the historical percentage used for an older invoice.

How do I calculate UPS fuel surcharge?

Multiply the applicable decimal percentage by the eligible transportation and accessorial-charge base. Use actual billed components and confirm the rounding method. The delivery contribution paid by your customer is not that base.

Does UPS apply fuel to additional handling?

The UK fuel page lists Additional Handling as an eligible accessorial where applicable. Check whether that charge actually applies and is billed for your parcel. Its inclusion can explain why fuel exceeds a transport-only calculation.

What is the current UPS fuel surcharge UK percentage?

Use the live dated UPS table or your contracted billing source. The accessible page did not expose populated percentage rows when checked on 14 October 2026, so this article does not substitute an unverified current figure.

Is fuel already included in my weekly UPS bill?

UPS says account holders have the fuel surcharge included on their weekly bill; occasional customers have it included in their charges. Check the line breakdown before adding a separate estimate to an already complete price.
