In short

  • For ordinary USPS Ground Advantage shop orders, plan on your own suitable packaging and check the finished package against the 70 lb and 130-inch combined length-and-girth limits. Free Priority Mail packaging is restricted to its designated service; access to dedicated Ground Advantage supplies depends on the applicable arrangement.
  • The maximum mailable size is not the same as the machinable size, the cubic-price limit or a surcharge threshold.
  • Use exterior packed measurements, protect the contents and keep every required label and marking readable on an appropriate flat surface.
  • Give whoever packs your orders a specific packaging reference and a rule for substitutions.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Buying a box is a repeat decision for a store, not just a way to get today’s order out. The wrong default can commit you to an unsuitable postal product, leave too little room for protection or create extra cost on every shipment. Start with the finished customer order and approve a pack that can be reproduced. The USPS sources below were reviewed on October 14, 2026.

Can my shop get free Ground Advantage boxes?

The general Ground Advantage service page tells customers to use their own packaging. The separate USPS business page describes exclusive Ground Advantage boxes in connection with a Negotiated Service Agreement for larger-volume businesses. Those statements describe different arrangements; neither supports promising unrestricted free boxes to every small online store.

If a marketplace or business program offers dedicated supplies, verify that program’s current eligibility and ordering instructions. Do not assume another seller’s arrangement applies to your independent shop. Confirm that the supplies are designated for Ground Advantage and obtain the accepted packaging specifications. Until access is confirmed, choose packaging you can actually source and include its real cost in your order calculation.

USPS’s free-supplies FAQ also discusses shipping supplies delivered by Ground Advantage. The service that delivers empty supplies does not determine how you may use those supplies afterward. A carton arriving through Ground Advantage can still be Priority Mail packaging restricted to Priority Mail. Check the product printed on the container, rather than its inbound tracking history.

Can I cover a Priority Mail box and use it for Ground Advantage?

No. DMM 601 section 6.1 restricts USPS-produced packaging to the applicable postal product. Reconfiguring it or hiding the markings does not remove the appropriate product-price requirement. That includes turning a box inside out or covering its branding. Write this into your packing instructions if your team keeps several kinds of postal supplies on the same shelf.

Use an unrestricted, suitable carton when you need the flexibility to compare Ground Advantage with another service. If you use USPS packaging, identify its exact designated product. Do not let a substitution depend on whether the exterior happens to look plain after repacking. Materials already in the stockroom are still subject to their original service restrictions.

A secondhand plain carton is a different question. Inspect its strength, closures and condition, and remove confusing previous addresses or labels before reuse. Reject damaged seams or crushed corners rather than assuming extra tape restores the carton’s original protection. The choice is specific to the contents and the finished pack; this article does not certify any reused box as suitable for every product.

Which size limit should I put on the packing sheet?

For a rectangular carton, length is the longest side and girth is twice the width plus twice the height. The commercial design standards in DMM 201 section 7 allow Ground Advantage up to 130 inches combined length and girth. Ground Advantage’s pricing standard separately applies oversized pricing above 108 inches and up to 130 inches. Passing the acceptance limit does not imply ordinary-size pricing.

Take an illustrative 24 × 20 × 18-inch finished carton. Its combined measurement is 24 + 2 × 20 + 2 × 18 = 100 inches. That is below 108, but the box is still large enough to need other rating checks, including dimensional weight and applicable nonstandard fees. One successful size calculation cannot establish the complete charge or a suitable packing method.

Machinability is another classification. DMM 201 gives machinable parcel maxima of 22 inches long, 18 inches wide and 15 inches high, with a maximum weight of 25 pounds. A Ground Advantage parcel can be within its general mailing limits and exceed those machinable limits. Keep those categories separate when evaluating an awkward carton; do not publish the machinable dimensions as the universal maximum for Ground Advantage.

CheckQuestion to answerPacking-sheet result
MailabilityIs the finished package within the service’s weight and combined size limits?Acceptable physical envelope, subject to contents and other standards
MachinabilityDoes the finished size, weight and construction fit the processing category?Record the actual category rather than assuming every accepted box is machinable
Price methodIs this weight-based postage or an eligible cubic arrangement?Save the method confirmed by the label provider
Extra size or shape feesDoes this particular carton trigger additional rating checks?Get a complete quote using accurate dimensions and characteristics
Product protectionCan the contents travel without moving or breaking through the pack?Approve materials and placement for this product combination
These are separate decisions. A maximum-size check is only one part of approving a repeatable Ground Advantage pack.

How small can I make a box before the label becomes a problem?

Do not approve a tiny carton based only on whether the product fits. DMM 201 requires enough space for the delivery address, return address, postage, barcode, labels and required markings on one optical plane without bending, folding or overlapping. The label layout can therefore set a practical lower size for your pack even when the contents are much smaller.

Place the actual shipping label on your packing trial. Check that the barcode remains flat and that tape or a carton edge does not distort it. Keep closures away from the area that must remain readable. If a smaller container only works by wrapping the label over two sides, choose an appropriate pack or ask the provider about a supported compliant label format.

The same inspection helps when an order uses a poly mailer. Soft goods may suit a mailer, but a sharp or rigid item can stress the material and shift during handling. Confirm the protective arrangement and required marking space. A bag’s low empty weight does not establish that the complete package is a better choice for your shop.

What should my sender do when the approved box runs out?

Specify a primary packaging reference and a permitted substitute only after you have tested both. Identify which product combinations fit each. If no approved container is available, the packer should pause that order and report the problem before purchasing postage. A taller substitute changes the finished measurement, and a different branded postal container can change the permitted service.

  1. Pack the full customer order

Include all units, protective materials, inserts and tape. Close it as it will travel; an open carton is not the measurement sample.

  2. Save the raw dimensions and weight

Measure the maximum exterior points. Identify bulges or uneven surfaces rather than relying solely on the supplier’s nominal interior size.

  3. Approve the label and service together

Check the available service quote, packaging restrictions and label placement. Photograph the approved arrangement for the person preparing repeat orders.

  4. Control substitutions

Recheck a replacement pack before using the old preset. Record the new reference if it is accepted, and replace the preset rather than silently keeping stale dimensions.

The cubic eligibility test has different measurements and a lower weight ceiling than the general Ground Advantage limits. If that is the price method you are investigating, use the separate guide to Ground Advantage Cubic carton checks. Keep the complete raw pack measurements in your record even when the pricing method later applies its own rounding.

How do I count packaging when comparing AirPost costs?

AirPost’s published shop arrangement lets you place stock with a suitable sender who packs and drops off the orders. The shop supplies boxes, tape and packing slips with the stock, or agrees how materials are purchased. Give the sender your approved references and replenishment instructions. Packaging availability is part of the arrangement, not something the carrier rate resolves.

On October 14, 2026, AirPost’s US domestic options displayed a small-package Ground Advantage start of approximately $7.78, already including the platform fee. If an order needs two labels and both actual quotes match that reference, the route component is $15.56 rather than $7.78: $7.78 more before preparation and materials. This is a conditional packing comparison, not a reported order volume.

A single safe combined carton may reduce the label count, but it needs a fresh quote and may cost more to prepare. Add the agreed preparation fee and the actual materials used by each option. Compare the two finished arrangements through AirPost’s seller service. The displayed starting reference is not a rate for the large demonstration box, and no packaging saving should be assumed without equivalent order quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Are USPS Ground Advantage boxes free?

Do not assume general access. USPS describes using your own packaging for the ordinary service and dedicated Ground Advantage boxes in particular business arrangements. Check your applicable program before planning around free supplies.

Can I use a Priority Mail box for Ground Advantage?

No. USPS-produced Priority Mail packaging is restricted to its designated service. Hiding the printing or reconfiguring the box does not remove the appropriate product-price requirement.

What is the largest Ground Advantage box?

The general service limit is 130 inches in combined length and girth, up to 70 pounds. Oversized pricing and other fees can apply below that acceptance ceiling; confirm the complete finished-package quote.

Can I use an envelope instead of a box?

A suitable mailer can work for appropriate contents. It still needs adequate protection, correct service rating and readable labels. Cubic mailer rules differ from the box-volume calculation.

Can I reuse a plain box for Ground Advantage?

Inspect its condition, remove confusing old labels and ensure it protects the contents. This does not override restrictions on USPS-produced packaging or prove every reused carton is suitable.
