In short

  • For Shopify POS, shortlist Socket Mobile S720 when you need a wireless 1D/2D scanner, or Zebra DS2208 for a fixed USB station; keep an existing S700 if its 1D-only capability still fits your products. These 3 choices cover different working setups, and the best fit depends on the exact tablet connection and barcode workflow.
  • Shopify says it still supports the S700, although that model is no longer sold through its hardware store. Supported and available to buy are different questions.
  • Shopify documents DS2208 connection through POS Hub, an Android USB-C stand, or compatible tablet USB in HID mode, with different conditions for each.
  • A scanner reading a code does not prove the application selected the intended variant or performed an inventory movement. Check the resulting screen and quantity.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A webshop that also sells at markets or from a counter can use scanning to find products without typing every reference. The purchase decision becomes harder when the same device is expected to support checkout, receiving and picking. Those tasks may use different application modes. This guide compares documented Shopify POS options for a US shop, using official pages checked on 10 October 2026. It is a compatibility and workflow comparison, not a hands-on ranking of scan speed or battery performance.

Which scanner should I choose for Shopify POS?

Choose the connection before comparing the scanner body. A device that looks convenient on a counter may require a hub, stand or cable your tablet does not support. Put those components in the purchase specification. For an existing scanner, test the current POS app and tablet rather than assuming yesterday’s setup still applies after an update. Keep a manual lookup method available during the first real trading session so one pairing problem does not stop checkout.

Do I need a 1D or 2D barcode scanner?

The Shopify 2D scanner guide says its supported Socket 2D scanners can read both printed and digital 1D and 2D barcodes. Shopify’s 1D scanner guide describes the S700 and CHS 7Ci as wireless scanners for printed and digital 1D barcodes. A linear product code and a QR code therefore create different hardware requirements.

Collect samples from the tasks you actually perform: product packaging, a code displayed on a customer’s phone and an internal shelf label. Identify which are needed at checkout and which belong to a stock-management tool. Owning a 2D reader does not mean every QR code carries a product identifier the POS understands. Some codes contain a web address or another type of data. Ask the application provider which code format and payload its workflow expects.

Should I replace a working Socket S700?

Shopify’s hardware availability page says the S700 is no longer available for sale in its hardware store but remains supported in Shopify POS. The same page lists the S720 and Zebra DS2208 among US and Canadian options. That is a reason to distinguish keeping your existing device from choosing equipment for a new station. It is not evidence that a used S700 from any seller will arrive in a working configuration.

If the S700 reliably handles your required codes, measure the unresolved task before replacing it. You may need better labels, a clearer product catalogue or a charging routine rather than a new scanner. If your workflow now requires 2D codes, that is a specific reason to investigate a different model. For second-hand equipment, check the charging accessories, pairing procedure and return conditions. Avoid buying an older device solely because its manufacturer name appears in a supported-hardware list.

How do I connect a Zebra DS2208 to my tablet?

Shopify’s DS2208 connection guide says the scanner has no wireless function and is not rechargeable. It recommends POS Hub for a compatible iPad or Android device, documents the USB-C tablet stand for Android only, and describes direct USB in HID keyboard mode for compatible iPad and Android tablets. These are distinct connection paths; a USB socket by itself does not identify the correct one.

The guide also distinguishes Application Mode from Keyboard Mode. In keyboard mode the scanner sends input like a keyboard, while the application mode is used for standard POS integration. Follow the official setup instructions for the mode you require. Test the return to POS after using another stock tool, because its mode requirements may differ. Do not reset a scanner in the middle of trading without retaining the instructions for restoring the working connection.

How long does a wireless scanner run between charges?

Shopify’s Socket 2D guide gives a fully charged battery figure of up to 14 hours, or about 15,000 scans, for the scanners described on that page. Treat that as a published upper figure rather than a measured runtime for your unit. Battery condition, use and charging arrangements still matter. Test the device through the length of your own selling session and identify where it will charge without interfering with the counter.

A wired station avoids a battery-charging task but introduces a cable route and a fixed working area. Keep the cable clear of drawers and packaging movement. A wireless scanner lets you reach items farther from the tablet, but somebody must return it to its charging place. Make the choice around the physical counter, including who closes it at the end of the day. A high advertised scan count is less useful if the device starts the next session uncharged.

Will scanning always add the exact product variant?

The Shopify scanner overview describes different scanning behaviours. Its variant-search guidance says scanning a variant barcode or SKU can display the master product in search results, requiring selection of the specific variant. It also distinguishes standard Application Mode, which adds products to the cart, from keyboard input. Test the action you use rather than relying on the scanner’s beep as the result.

Use two visually similar variants in the trial, then inspect the product, size or colour and quantity on screen. Scan the same item twice and verify the intended quantity. Try a damaged label and a code that does not exist in the catalogue. Decide how staff should recover without choosing the first plausible search result. If the device is also used at a packing table, confirm the separate picking application supports the workflow; POS compatibility alone does not establish order-verification functionality.

How does a picking mistake change the parcel cost?

For a separate transport illustration, AirPost’s US → US page retrieved on 10 October 2026 showed small-format USPS Ground Advantage starting at approximately $7.78, equivalent to €6.94 in its euro payment view. Eighteen parcels would have a €124.92 label subtotal only if each actual ZIP-code and finished-parcel quote matched that reference. Three additional replacement deliveries at that same confirmed amount would add €20.82 before product, packaging and preparation costs.

The displayed starting reference includes the €0.85 platform fee. It does not price a return label, refund, replacement product or scanner purchase. The example is not an observed error rate or a claim that buying a scanner prevents three mistakes. It shows why a picking check deserves a trial: successful code reading needs to lead to the right physical item and quantity before the parcel leaves. Obtain actual route quotes before budgeting a replacement.

The Shopify inventory comparison covers the system that records stock states and buffers. With AirPost for shops, a sender can prepare an agreed batch of your products near your customers. Give them a clear variant reference and packing instruction. A POS scanner may be part of your own counter setup; do not assume every sender needs the same equipment or that scanning replaces their order check.

What should I include in a scanner acceptance test?

  1. Connect the complete station

Use the intended tablet, POS app, hub or stand and cable. Confirm the official connection method and restore it after a restart.

  2. Scan the necessary formats

Try the actual printed and on-screen codes your shop uses. Record an unsupported format separately from a code missing in the catalogue.

  3. Inspect the result

Check product, variant, quantity and workflow. Include duplicate scans, search results and one unreadable label.

  4. Run the real session

Test battery or cable handling over your normal trading period. Document the charging, reconnecting and manual-lookup process for another staff member.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best barcode scanner for Shopify POS?

S720 is worth investigating for wireless 1D/2D use, while DS2208 fits a supported fixed USB station. An existing S700 can remain useful for 1D work. Verify the exact tablet and workflow rather than buying by brand alone.

Can you use any barcode scanner with Shopify?

Shopify lists supported models and also documents HID scanners. Follow the compatibility and mode instructions for your device. Successful pairing does not establish that every inventory or picking workflow is supported.

Does the Zebra DS2208 have Bluetooth?

No. Shopify describes it as a USB scanner without wireless capability. Choose a documented tablet connection and include any required hub, stand or adapter in the setup.

Is the Socket S700 still supported?

Shopify says it remains supported in POS, although it is no longer sold in its hardware store. Its documented capability is 1D scanning, so assess whether your shop now needs 2D formats.

Can I scan with the tablet camera instead?

Shopify documents camera scanning for 1D and 2D codes, with a different search interaction from an external scanner. Try that workflow before buying hardware if your volume and physical setup allow it.
