In short

  • For ecommerce across 2 or more stores, shortlist ShipStation when you need layered order rules, Shippo for straightforward package and service assignments, and Sendcloud when its supported carrier workflow fits your dispatch market. The best choice is the one that passes your mixed-order tests, because these tools resolve overlapping rules differently.
  • ShipStation’s later automation rules can override earlier ones; Shippo uses the first matching rule for the same action. Copying a rule list between them can change the service selected.
  • Sendcloud says its shipping rules do not apply to manually created shipments and do not convert order-value currencies.
  • Compare software separately from the work of storing, picking and packing products. A successful label import is not proof that an order was physically dispatched.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Two stores can sell the same product while sending different order numbers, delivery descriptions and currencies into one packing queue. Shipping software helps only when that queue preserves the distinctions that matter. This comparison examines documented automation behaviour rather than counting logos on an integrations page. Official help documents were checked on 10 October 2026. The recommendations are based on those documents and a proposed acceptance test, not a benchmark of customer satisfaction or support speed.

Which shipping software should I shortlist for multiple stores?

Use the table to choose a trial, then verify your actual storefront connector and carrier account. A product can document an automation feature without making it available in every plan or dispatch country. Ask for the plan and integration that will run your sample orders. This article does not quote subscription prices or claim that one provider’s negotiated postage is always cheaper. Those comparisons need an equivalent current quote for your parcel and address.

How do ShipStation rules behave when an order changes?

The ShipStation automation guide says rules run when orders import or first move into Awaiting Shipment or On Hold. Changes to orders already in Awaiting Shipment do not trigger those rules. It also says automation rules run after product defaults and service mapping, and can override them. Later rules can override earlier rules in the same sequence.

That makes the edited-order test particularly valuable. Suppose a customer adds another item after the order first enters your queue. Inspect the weight, packaging and carrier decision after the change instead of assuming the import rules run again. A human correction may be the right process, but it must be visible to the packing team. Record who reviews changed orders and when they become eligible for a label. An unattended old selection can look perfectly complete on screen.

How is Shippo rule priority different?

Shippo’s automation overview allows assignments such as package template, carrier service, sender address and tag. It applies saved rules to new imported orders, including CSV imports. Rules process from top to bottom, and the first matching rule wins when multiple rules would assign the same action. Different actions can still apply to one order.

Imagine an illustrative rule for every order under 3 kg and a more specific rule for a single poster tube under 1 kg. If both assign packaging, a broad rule placed first can hide the specific one. This example demonstrates priority; it is not a carrier weight limit. Build your conditions from the actual product and packed measurements. Keep the explanation beside the rule so a colleague knows why the specific case comes first. Otherwise an innocent reordering can alter dispatch without changing any order.

What should I check before relying on Sendcloud rules?

The Sendcloud shipping-rule document limits the feature to orders imported into the Incoming order overview; manually created shipments do not receive these rules. It says rules use the numeric order value without currency conversion. It also documents limited multicollo behaviour, including weight and dimension conditions that are not matched for those shipments. These are concrete boundaries to test before using a rule as a universal dispatch policy.

For a UK shop with a second storefront collecting euros, do not use the same unexplained value threshold as though both numbers were pounds. Decide whether to separate rules by store or use another documented criterion. Similarly, create one sample split into several parcels and inspect each assignment. The manual order entered for a telephone customer belongs in the test too. If a staff member expects automation where the tool excludes it, the operational problem starts before any courier receives the box.

Can one dashboard prevent duplicate shipments?

It can give you a common queue, but your trial must establish how the connector identifies orders. Two stores may both produce order 1042. Keep store identity and the original order reference together, rather than treating the displayed number as globally unique. Import an order, refresh the connection and check whether it appears once. Then update its address and check whether the existing record changes or another record is created. The expected result should be agreed before anyone buys postage.

Use a cancellation case as well. Cancel an order before the packing cutoff, confirm that the picker sees the cancellation and verify that no new label is purchased. Cancelling a shop order and cancelling a carrier label are separate operations to inspect. Avoid allowing two systems to independently decide that the same order is ready to ship. Choose the screen that owns dispatch approval, and use the other system’s status as a report rather than a second invitation to buy postage.

How much can the carrier rule change the parcel budget?

On AirPost’s UK → UK page retrieved on 10 October 2026, small-format Evri ParcelShop was €7.29 and DPD Drop Off Economy Plus was €8.83 in the euro payment view. Their approximate local displays were £6.18 and £7.48. For an illustrative batch of 40 qualifying parcels, the label subtotals are €291.60 and €353.20: a difference of €61.60. Each quoted label already includes the €0.85 platform fee.

That difference is the result of choosing different transport products, not a measured saving from any of the three software tools. The correct choice also depends on the delivery promise, parcel eligibility and handover arrangements. These AirPost amounts are not prices from ShipStation, Shippo or Sendcloud. Add the actual software quotation, preparation agreement and materials to your own budget. Recheck the live parcel quote when an automation rule changes package size or service.

For the separate charging-model decision, read shipping subscriptions versus per-parcel plans. For the device that prints the chosen document, use the UK label-printer comparison. Neither a subscription nor a faster printer fixes a rule that routes an edited order into an unsuitable parcel service.

Which trial orders should decide the software purchase?

  1. Two stores, matching order numbers

Create a harmless test case in each connector and retain store identity. Verify imports, refreshes and tracking writeback without mixing the records.

  2. One order changed after import

Change quantity or packed weight using a supported test procedure. Inspect the applied service and packaging, and record any manual review required.

  3. One conflicting rule

Make a broad condition overlap a specific condition. Check the resulting assignment before and after changing rule order.

  4. One unusual dispatch

Try a foreign-currency order, a manual order and a multi-parcel case. Mark each unsupported automation explicitly in the packing instructions.

If your real bottleneck is somebody doing the physical work, include that in the decision. AirPost for shops connects you with senders who hold an agreed stock batch, pack orders and hand parcels over. Ask the sender which order reference they use and where dispatch approval appears. A label dashboard and a packing arrangement can serve different needs; buy the tool that resolves the task you have actually measured.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best shipping software for ecommerce?

Start with the tool whose documented rule behaviour and connectors fit your stores. ShipStation, Shippo and Sendcloud each merit a trial for different reasons. A universal ranking would hide country, plan and order-format differences.

Is the first matching shipping rule always used?

No. Shippo documents first-match priority for the same action, while ShipStation documents later rules overriding earlier automation. Sendcloud also warns that later rules can cancel earlier choices. Test the exact tool.

Will an edited order automatically get a new service?

Do not assume that. ShipStation specifically says changes to orders already in Awaiting Shipment do not trigger automation rules. Define a review process for edits in your chosen system.

Can I compare software using the same postage price?

Use the same origin, destination, finished parcel and service requirements, then obtain each actual quote. An AirPost route reference here illustrates transport budgeting; it does not establish another provider’s rate.

Does shipping software also manage the people packing?

The documented label rules do not establish physical handling capacity or a stock agreement. Arrange picking, packaging and handover responsibilities separately and connect them to the dispatch queue.
