In short
- A German EU Blue Card does not by itself answer whether your parcel side business is permitted: read its work endorsement and Zusatzblatt. Section 21(6) provides a route to permission for self-employment alongside another residence purpose, while an existing broad endorsement may already cover it.
- Berlin says an endorsement allowing economic activity or self-employment can remove the need for a separate immigration application. A restriction to employment needs a different check.
- Packing parcels is not automatically a German liberal profession just because you call the work freelance. Clarify the commercial activity you will actually carry out.
- Commercial registration, tax registration and immigration permission are separate steps. Completing one does not settle the other two.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You work in Germany on a Blue Card and want an extra income stream from home. A shop could store products with you and pay you to pack its customer orders. It is a small proposed service, but “small” does not identify its legal category. Start with the wording on your documents and the actual tasks, before buying equipment or promising a dispatch date.
This guide concerns a Blue Card issued in Germany. It is not a rule for a Blue Card issued elsewhere or for every expat residence status. Keep the residence card, supplementary sheet and decision letter available. If a restriction or endorsement is unclear, ask the authority responsible for your residence how it applies to the service you describe.
Which words on your Zusatzblatt decide the first step?
Look for the distinction between employment and economic activity. Berlin’s immigration authority explains that endorsements permitting Erwerbstätigkeit or selbständige Tätigkeit allow self-employed activity without an additional application to that authority. This is useful official guidance for interpreting a broad endorsement, but you still need to read any specific conditions on your own document.
Read the whole sheet rather than searching only for the word erlaubt. An endorsement may name an employer, a work category or conditions. If it covers employment without mentioning independent work, do not silently turn it into permission to operate a business. Put the exact wording in your enquiry, together with the proposed service and its relationship to your main job.
| What the document appears to say | What to resolve before parcel work | Next practical step |
|---|---|---|
| Broad economic activity or self-employment allowed | Whether any additional condition narrows that permission | Keep the endorsement and check business registration |
| Only employment or a specified job allowed | Whether independent parcel work needs added permission | Ask the immigration authority with a task description |
| Self-employment expressly prohibited | How to obtain permission before starting | Do not take the paid service on the current wording |
| Supplementary sheet missing or wording inconsistent | Which current conditions apply to your title | Request clarification or the current supplementary document |
Do this check before asking a shop to send stock. A box arriving at your home can create practical obligations even if you have not yet received a customer order. Keep the enquiry accurate: include storage, packing, label printing and drop-off rather than describing the activity only as an online account.
Can permission be added without replacing your main residence purpose?
Section 21(6) of the Residence Act provides for permission to carry out self-employed activity while retaining another residence purpose, subject to required permissions under other rules. It says permission may be granted. It does not make every proposed side business automatically authorised.
Where that route is needed, explain how the work stays alongside your existing employment. Describe what you will do, who pays, the intended scale and how you will keep the main job separate. An enquiry should give the authority enough information to answer the proposed arrangement, rather than forcing it to infer a business model from the word freelance.
If the authority needs more information, keep the shop’s proposal conditional while you supply it. Do not treat submitting a request as permission to begin. Once permission is clear, save the decision and the relevant conditions together. They tell you what has been approved and help you recognise when a later change needs another check.
Also review the terms of your main employment agreement before committing to another service. If it contains a notification or approval process for outside work, follow that process for the actual arrangement. This contractual check has a different purpose from immigration permission. A manager’s agreement cannot rewrite a residence restriction.
Does “freelance” mean parcel packing is a Freiberuf?
No. English uses freelance for many independent arrangements. German administration distinguishes a gewerbliche Tätigkeit from a freiberufliche Tätigkeit. Berlin’s examples of liberal professions include writers, language teachers and independently practising professionals. That list does not make a physical parcel service a liberal profession merely because you issue invoices.
For AirPost, the practical service is clear: an online shop sends stock and packaging to your address, the stock remains its property, and you accept orders, print labels, pack and hand parcels over. You agree a rate per parcel. The sender page describes that workflow. Use those tasks when asking which registration fits, instead of borrowing a category from your main professional qualification.
Keep the parcel business distinct from any other independent activity you already have. Permission for a specifically described professional service may need clarification before you add stock handling. Similarly, an existing tax number is not a reason to assume every new activity has already been reported. Ask about the change in activity, not only whether you possess a number.
For the actual collaboration, put the agreed fee, dispatch expectations and stock arrangement in writing. Identify who provides materials and how you handle absence or the return of stock. These are practical terms you need to assess before accepting work. They also make the description supplied to the authorities match the service you will perform.
Which registrations come after the work permission is clear?
For a standing commercial business, section 14 GewO requires notification to the competent authority at the same time as starting it. Separately, section 138 AO sets out tax-registration information and a one-month reporting deadline for the relevant events. A Gewerbeanmeldung is therefore not the whole administrative process.
Confirm the permitted activity
Use the existing endorsement or obtain the required clarification or permission. Check that the actual parcel tasks fit any stated conditions.
Resolve the commercial category
Describe the service to the competent registration office. Establish what business notification is required for your activity and address.
Complete the tax information
Arrange the required registration information for the Finanzamt. Track the applicable deadline from the actual reportable event, rather than from a later convenient payout.
Keep a transaction record
Retain the fee agreement, completed orders, payout statements, commission records and business expenses. Reconcile gross service income with the money transferred.
Use your real start date and activity description consistently. Opening an account, receiving stock, beginning the service and receiving money can happen on different dates. If you are unsure which event is relevant for a registration, ask that question explicitly. Delaying a payout is not a reliable way to postpone the administrative consequences of work already performed.
How much would a modest parcel workload add before tax?
Take a planning assumption of 16 small parcels weekly at AirPost’s recommended €2.25 sender rate. Over the calculator’s four-week month, that is €144.00 in fees and €139.68 after the 3% payout commission. These constants were checked on 14 October 2026. The calculation assumes completed orders; it does not say those orders are available in your neighbourhood.
The remaining amount is before tax, your own costs and any applicable VAT treatment. It is not the shipping-label budget and does not include a salary guarantee. Track the whole service time, including stock checks, communication and journeys, before judging whether this is worthwhile beside a full-time job. The parcel earnings explanation gives more detail about the fee calculation.
Treat the main employment and the extra service as separate budget lines. Parcel income can be variable even when your salary is steady. Avoid building a rent or residence plan around an assumed flow of orders. Agree only the service capacity you can maintain, then compare actual income and expenses after completed work.
What if the side business becomes your only work?
That is a different residence question. Section 18g bases the Blue Card on qualifying employment and requires the relevant job offer to cover at least six months. Permission for an additional independent activity should not be read as a ready-made replacement for the basis of your main title.
Before leaving employment to run the service alone, ask about the residence basis for that new plan. Keep the explanation concrete: an extra parcel service becoming the main activity is a change in how you work, not merely a higher number in the same calculator. Resolve the new position before promising ongoing fulfilment to a shop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I freelance on a German Blue Card?
Check the actual work endorsement and supplementary sheet. A broad permission may already allow self-employment; a restrictive endorsement needs clarification or added permission before you start.
Does a Gewerbeanmeldung give me immigration permission?
No. Commercial registration and residence work rights are separate. Resolve the permitted activity first and complete the required business and tax steps as well.
Is parcel packing a freelance profession in Germany?
The English word freelance does not decide that. Describe the parcel service and clarify its commercial classification rather than assuming the category of your main profession applies.
Can I wait until the first payout to register?
Do not assume that. Registration obligations can relate to starting the activity rather than receiving the bank transfer. Check the relevant start event and deadline for your case.
Can parcel income replace my Blue Card job?
An approved side activity does not automatically replace the qualifying employment underlying the Blue Card. Ask the immigration authority about the new residence basis before changing your main work.
