Deliveroo rider pay: why £17.18 is not an online hourly wage

Use the UK 2026 vehicle pay floors to calculate order-time versus online earnings, waiting-time effects and the costs left to cover before choosing delivery work.

In short

  • Deliveroo’s UK car pay floor is £17.18 per hour of estimated order time from 1 April 2026, including vehicle costs. It is not a £17.18 wage for every hour you stay online; the bicycle floor is £12.88 on the same order-time basis.
  • To compare side jobs, divide completed-order fees by all the time you set aside, then account for your own costs. Keep estimated order time and actual elapsed time in separate columns.
  • A higher vehicle floor leaves more money to cover that vehicle; it does not establish a higher profit.
  • Parcel packing uses an agreed fee per parcel. It needs its own full-task calculation, without treating euro examples as pound earnings.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You are choosing what to do with a spare evening, not buying a number from an advert. A delivery offer can be clear about its fee while still leaving an uncertain result for the whole evening. The missing link is how much of the time you give up is represented by completed orders and how much money the work costs you.

The figures here come from Deliveroo’s UK rider guidance checked on 19 October 2026. This is a method for comparing a concrete delivery opportunity with packing shop orders from home. It does not estimate average rider earnings in your town or assume that a particular number of orders will be offered.

What does the 2026 pay floor actually measure?

Deliveroo describes the floor as applying to its estimated time between accepting an order and marking it delivered. The published vehicle rates include vehicle costs. Fees are for completed orders. Those conditions matter as much as the headline number: an estimate attached to an order is a different denominator from the time you reserve for work.

Registered vehiclePublished estimated-order-hour floorTwenty estimated minutes at that floor
Bicycle£12.88£4.29
eBike£12.99£4.33
Scooter£14.40£4.80
Car£17.18£5.73
Deliveroo UK, effective 1 April 2026. The last column is arithmetic, rounded to pennies; it is not a universal fee for a delivery or an online-hour guarantee.

Think of the last column as a unit conversion. It helps you understand what a rate means over a shorter estimated task. It cannot tell you whether a particular offer is worthwhile, because the real task, waiting and travel can differ. Read the actual offer in the app rather than assuming that every nearby journey receives the same amount.

What happens when order time fills only part of an hour?

Use a deliberately simplified sensitivity test. Assume that completed offers are paid exactly at the relevant floor and that estimated order minutes match actual order minutes. Assume no boosts or tips. If only forty minutes of an hour are represented by those completed orders, multiply the published floor by forty divided by sixty. This is a model, not a claim about demand.

VehicleThirty represented minutes in one hourForty represented minutes in one hourSixty represented minutes in one hour
Bicycle£6.44£8.59£12.88
eBike£6.50£8.66£12.99
Scooter£7.20£9.60£14.40
Car£8.59£11.45£17.18
Calculated receipts before personal costs and tax under the stated assumptions. Represented minutes mean completed orders whose estimated and actual durations match in this model.

The shareable result is the proportion, not a promised earning: forty represented minutes turn an order-hour figure into two thirds of that figure for the whole hour. If an estimate is shorter than the actual task, the result can be lower again. If offers pay above the floor or tasks finish sooner, this simplified table does not describe them.

This is why an honest record needs three clocks. Record when you make yourself available, the estimated duration attached to each offer where available, and when you actually finish the work. Do not silently replace the first clock with the most flattering of the other two. For comparing evenings, the time you could otherwise have used is a useful personal measure.

Does restaurant waiting automatically increase the fee?

Deliveroo says its estimates account for average collection and customer waiting, but individual orders can take longer or shorter than estimated. That is not the same as promising a running hourly wage whenever you are delayed. If an offer or adjustment appears wrong, retain the relevant record and use rider support rather than assuming an automatic top-up.

Distinguish waiting before an order from waiting during one. The first changes the share of an evening occupied by paid tasks. The second can change the relationship between estimated task duration and your actual time. Combining both into one vague description of a quiet shift makes it harder to see what you could improve or which issue you should raise.

For your own decision, write one line for each task and a separate line for gaps. Do not duplicate minutes when two activities overlap. Include the time needed to finish your working session and get back to the place from which you would normally resume your evening. This personal comparison does not decide which journeys have a particular tax treatment.

How much room is left for vehicle costs?

Start with receipts for the whole session. Subtract the money you actually need to allocate to the work: appropriate insurance, energy or fuel, maintenance, parking where applicable, and other business expenses. Costs do not disappear because an order fee includes an allowance for a vehicle. Equally, do not invent a standard cost per mile and present it as every rider’s experience.

You can calculate a cost ceiling without making up a vehicle price. In the forty-minute car scenario above, receipts are about £11.45 for the whole hour. If your chosen target is £10 before personal tax, the maximum cost budget is about £1.45 for that hour. Ten pounds is only a planning target here, not a legal wage or a statement that this budget is sufficient.

That ceiling is a useful rejection test. Compare it with a real quote and your measured usage. If the work costs more than the budget, the scenario misses your target even before tax. To improve the result you would need a different fee, less total time, lower actual costs, or a different opportunity. Changing the label from receipts to earnings does not fix the arithmetic.

When does the money reach your account?

The payment guidance says weekly fees cover Monday to Sunday and are processed on Tuesday, with receipt by midnight. The separate cash-out page describes a 50p charge for earlier withdrawal and a 17:30 weekday cutoff for its stated instant-payment timing. Check the current app conditions before depending on an early transfer.

Separate timing from profitability. Receiving the same fees sooner does not improve the return on the work when you pay to accelerate the transfer. If you cash out four times at the published charge, the arithmetic is £2. That is a withdrawal-choice example, not a required weekly expense. Record such charges if you incur them and avoid budgeting money you have not earned.

How do you compare this with packing webshop orders?

An AirPost sender handles shop stock and prepares outgoing orders at home, then prints labels and takes parcels to a parcel point. The shop sends the products and packaging. You agree the fee by parcel size. The sender explanation shows this workflow; the work is different from riding to each customer with a meal.

For a separate euro example, use twelve parcels at the recommended parcel fee of €3.00, checked in the shared pricing constants on 19 October 2026. The total fee is €36.00. With one payout of that amount, the 3% commission is €1.08, leaving €34.92 before your own expenses and tax. Twelve is an illustrative quantity, not guaranteed work.

Suppose your target within that same euro example is €15 per hour before personal expenses and tax. The whole task must then fit within about 139 minutes. That includes stock handling, messages, packing and parcel-point travel. This calculates a time budget; it does not claim that twelve parcels actually take that long.

Keep currencies explicit. These euro-denominated assumptions cannot establish whether packing pays more than the pound-denominated rider offer. Use the actual currency and conversion applying to your own agreement before ranking the cash results. For a broader task comparison, read parcel packing versus food delivery. The hourly choice also depends on whether any suitable orders are available.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Deliveroo rider pay rate in the UK?

The published 2026/27 floors differ by vehicle and use estimated time on completed orders. They include vehicle costs. Read the actual offer and measure your full session before calculating a personal hourly return.

How much does Deliveroo pay per delivery?

There is no single universal amount in this comparison. An individual offer has its own fee. The twenty-minute table converts published floors for explanation; it is not a tariff for every delivery.

Is Deliveroo cyclist pay the same as car pay?

The published vehicle floors differ. A car also brings different costs, so comparing the larger fee alone does not tell you which option leaves more money.

Does a pay floor guarantee income for waiting online?

It uses estimated order time, not every available minute. Record gaps and actual task duration separately to see the result for the evening you gave up.

Can home parcel packing replace a delivery shift?

Only if suitable shop work is actually available and the fee, total time and costs meet your needs. Payment per parcel brings no guaranteed hourly wage or order volume.
