In short
- To buy from the US and ship to Austria, choose between 2 purchase routes: the retailer's own international delivery or a separate US forwarding service. AirPost serves shops placing stock with local senders; it does not provide a US shopping address or buy a retailer's goods for you.
- A US delivery address solves the first delivery leg, not the full cost of getting the purchase to Austria.
- Compare the complete landed cost, including forwarding, handling and any import charges, before ordering.
- An Austrian domestic parcel price applies after goods are physically in Austria; it is not a US-to-Austria shipping quote.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
The product is available in an American shop, but Austria is missing from the delivery menu. Searching for parcel forwarding is a sensible next step. The awkward part is that several quite different services sound alike: an international retailer, a forwarding warehouse and someone packing orders for an online shop. You need the service that matches your purchase. This guide separates those jobs and explains what to check before sending a paid order to an intermediary.
Can the American retailer ship directly to Austria?
Start with the actual product and your Austrian postcode in the retailer's checkout. A general international-shipping page is less useful than the options available for that item. Ask whether the displayed total covers just delivery or also import charges. Check the return destination at the same time. Direct shipping can be easier to manage because the shop books the international shipment itself, but compare its complete terms rather than assuming that fewer handovers always means a lower price.
Save the order confirmation and the delivery option you selected. If the retailer cannot accept your address, ask whether it permits orders sent to a commercial forwarding address. Do that before buying a membership or paying for a service elsewhere. The forwarder's ability to receive a parcel does not oblige a retailer to accept your order, payment card or destination. A rejected retail order leaves you without anything for the forwarder to send.
What does a US parcel forwarder actually do?
A forwarding service gives you an address to use for the retailer's domestic delivery and then arranges another shipment to Austria. As a checked example, MyUS's Austria page describes a US shopping address, receipt at its warehouse and consolidation of purchases before onward shipping. That establishes what this type of provider offers. It does not establish the best provider for your order or the final price of your packed box.
| Your situation | Service to investigate | Important handover |
|---|---|---|
| Retailer accepts your Austrian address | Direct international retail delivery | Retailer to international carrier |
| Retailer only delivers within the US | A US parcel forwarder accepted by the retailer | Retailer to forwarding address, then export |
| Your shop already has stock in Austria | Local order preparation and domestic shipping | Local stock holder to Austrian parcel carrier |
Use the address exactly as the forwarder supplies it, including any customer or suite reference. Keep the retailer's domestic tracking number alongside the forwarding reference. Those identifiers help distinguish a parcel that has reached the building from a purchase that has been matched to your account. Before ordering several products, ask how the provider records separate incoming parcels and how you authorise their release. You should know who holds the goods at each stage.
Which costs belong in a US-to-Austria comparison?
Compare totals for the same product, packed shipment and delivery address. The international transport line is only one part of the decision. A membership fee or handling option can look small beside the goods price but still change which route is cheaper. Do not assign a guessed amount to an unclear charge: ask the provider for its applicable price or mark it as unresolved. A quote with missing charges is incomplete, even when its headline rate is attractive.
- The retailer's goods price and delivery to the US address.
- Any account, receiving, storage, consolidation or repacking services you actually select.
- International transport for the final shipment, including applicable carrier extras.
- Import VAT, customs duty and clearance or advancement fees under the applicable procedure.
- The cost and route of returning the purchase if it is wrong, damaged or unsuitable.
Ask when the international price becomes final. If the provider needs to receive and pack your purchases first, a preliminary estimate may not settle the cost. Keep the estimated amount and its assumptions: weight, box size, service and what is included. When the final quote arrives, compare it with those assumptions before authorising export. This gives you a chance to understand a changed price while the parcel is still at the forwarding address.
Should several American purchases be combined?
Consolidation means asking the provider to prepare purchases for an onward shipment together. Ask for a comparison between sending the incoming parcels separately and sending the proposed combined box. Use the final packing information in both cases. Removing unnecessary outer packaging might help, but do not authorise removal of protective or product packaging without understanding the consequences for fragile goods and later returns. The lowest transport charge is useful only if the goods arrive in a condition you can use.
Also ask what happens when one retailer's parcel arrives much later than the others. Waiting for it changes the point at which everything can leave the forwarding address. Your request should state which purchases may travel together and which should leave independently. Preserve an itemised record for the combined shipment: consolidation changes the transport package, while the products still need accurate descriptions and values. It is not a way to turn paid purchases into a private gift.
Does forwarding remove Austrian import charges?
Forwarding through a US address does not make the goods an Austrian domestic purchase. The Austrian Ministry of Finance's current e-commerce FAQ/FAQs-E-Commerce.html) explains the import declaration and charges. Its guidance was updated for the July 2026 rules, so do not base an October purchase on an older claim that low-value imports are always duty-free. Establish what is prepaid and what can be collected later for your shipment.
Keep the order confirmation, item quantities and values, shipping charges and payment evidence available for clearance. The ministry explains that missing information can hold up declaration. Check restrictions before buying unusual goods, particularly products whose export or import needs specific approval. A retailer accepting payment and a forwarding warehouse accepting delivery are not proof that the product can legally travel to Austria. Ask about the actual product rather than its broad retail category.
When does the delivery clock start?
Plan the whole sequence: retail processing, delivery to the US address, receipt and preparation by the forwarder, international transport, clearance and final delivery. An advertised international transit estimate normally cannot tell you how long the retailer will take to dispatch or how long you will wait for another purchase. Ask which event starts the quoted estimate. If you need the item for a date in Vienna or Graz, tell the provider the date and postcode before paying.
Track each handover with its own reference. A domestic US delivery event is not evidence that the export shipment has left. An international dispatch event is not proof that Austrian clearance is complete. If something stops moving, first identify which party last received the goods. That makes the enquiry specific and helps avoid opening the same investigation with the retailer, forwarder and final carrier at once. Keep the package description and order references consistent across those enquiries.
Why is an Austrian domestic price much lower than a forwarding quote?
It covers a different journey. The AirPost European carrier-only index retrieved on 10 October 2026 lists an Austrian domestic 2 kg minimum of €6.53. Adding the platform fee of €0.85 and the recommended small-parcel preparation fee of €2.25 gives an illustrative local order cost of €9.63. The sender sets the actual preparation fee. This calculation includes no US purchasing, forwarding or import service.
That local example is relevant to a shop whose products are already placed with a suitable Austrian sender. Transporting the stock there has to be budgeted separately. It cannot be used to price a personal purchase that is still in an American retailer's warehouse. The existing parcel prices for Austria guide explains the broader parcel comparison. Always carry the dispatch origin with the price so a cheap domestic label does not disguise an unpaid international leg.
When would a shop use local fulfilment instead?
For repeat Austrian customer orders, a shop can investigate holding an agreed stock batch locally. AirPost's local fulfilment arrangement connects the shop with a sender who packs orders and hands them to a parcel carrier. The shop supplies products and packaging; the stock remains the shop's property. Agree capacity, product handling and replenishment before sending it. Ask for an identity check in the chat if you need one. AirPost does not insure stock held by the sender.
The relevant comparison is then repeated international customer shipments against stock transport plus local preparation and delivery. Use your own expected orders and real replenishment quote. The Austria stock-batch guide covers that model. It serves an online shop's inventory and orders, rather than a shopper looking for an American address. For a single retail purchase, direct international delivery or a suitable forwarding provider remains the service to investigate.
Frequently asked questions
Can AirPost give me a US address for an American purchase?
No. AirPost's model is local preparation of shop orders from stock placed with a sender. Use a dedicated forwarding provider if your retailer only accepts a US delivery address.
Is direct shipping or forwarding always cheaper?
Neither is always cheaper. Compare the same purchase and packed shipment with all selected services, import charges and a workable return route included.
Does sending several purchases together make them a gift?
No. Combining paid purchases changes the package, not the nature of the purchases. Keep itemised descriptions, values and payment records for clearance.
Can I use the Austrian domestic 2 kg price for US shipping?
No. It applies to a parcel dispatched inside Austria. It excludes the purchase's US delivery, forwarding, international transport and import costs.
What should I check before ordering to a forwarder?
Confirm retailer acceptance, the exact account address, product eligibility, how the final quote is calculated and how you can return the purchase. Then retain every order and parcel reference.
