In short
- In Scotland, the published Carer Support Payment earnings limit checked on 14 October 2026 is £204 a week in assessed take-home pay; Social Security Scotland can average variable earnings. Before accepting side work, check its effect on Carer Support Payment and on the Scottish payments linked to that award.
- The care test for Carer Support Payment is at least 35 hours of unpaid care a week, together with the other eligibility conditions.
- Scottish Carer Supplement is paid automatically with an eligible Carer Support Payment award; Carer Additional Person Payment has its own additional-care conditions.
- A euro platform calculator is not a sterling benefit assessment. Use actual income, allowed expenses and the assessment period agreed for your work.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You care for someone in Scotland and would like a modest second income without taking a fixed shift away from home. Packing webshop orders may be worth investigating, but it needs a real processing and dispatch window. There is also a Scottish benefit question: your existing support can consist of several linked payments. Looking only at the headline earnings ceiling can miss part of the household decision.
This article covers Scotland and the published rules checked on 14 October 2026. It focuses on the 2026 Scottish carer package and a possible separate home-based activity. The AirPost sender page explains how shops place stock with senders and pay for completed parcel work. Being at home does not automatically make that work compatible with your care arrangements, and a profile does not guarantee orders.
Which earnings figure does Social Security Scotland assess?
The official if you work guidance uses assessed take-home pay, not simply the largest number on a platform statement. It combines employment and self-employment income and applies the permitted deductions. Variable earnings can be averaged in ways that reflect your circumstances. Ask which evidence and period apply to your business before treating a particular payout as your weekly assessed earnings.
Use that distinction when reading your own records. An order can be completed on one day and paid out later. A commission can be deducted separately. An additional employed job can produce a payslip on another schedule. Keep the dates and descriptions visible so the assessing office can understand the work. Do not choose the smallest bank withdrawal as the whole income figure simply because it happened during a quiet week.
There is no useful universal parcel ceiling for this benefit. Your agreed fee, other earnings, allowable expenses and assessment period determine the financial question. Your care and dispatch arrangements determine the practical question. Work through both before giving a shop a recurring commitment. A low price per order does not remove the need to explain an additional activity.
Which Scottish payments belong in the same decision?
The current mygov.scot overview lists three payments. Carer Support Payment is the main award. Scottish Carer Supplement is added automatically when you receive it. Carer Additional Person Payment can recognise care for further qualifying people. The Scottish Government’s March 2026 announcement explains the introduction of the additional-person payment and the replacement of the previous supplement for relevant recipients.
| Payment | Published weekly amount on 14 October 2026 | What connects it to your work decision |
|---|---|---|
| Carer Support Payment | Up to £86.45 | Assessed earnings and all other eligibility conditions apply |
| Scottish Carer Supplement | £11.70 | Automatically linked to receiving Carer Support Payment |
| Carer Additional Person Payment | £10.40 for each qualifying additional person | Requires Carer Support Payment and the additional-care conditions |
Read your award notice to see which parts you actually receive. A package calculation based on a full main award may differ from a household receiving another overlapping benefit. When asking about side work, name each payment shown on your letter. The useful question is how the proposed activity affects your whole award and reporting, rather than how much a carer somewhere else earns.
The latest figures also matter. A launch announcement records the amounts at its publication date. The official 2026–27 uprating table shows later rates for the main and additional-person components. Use the current guidance and your award notice for a present-day budget, while using the announcement to understand what changed in the system.
How does caring for an additional person change the picture?
The Scottish eligibility guidance says Carer Additional Person Payment requires an existing Carer Support Payment award and at least 20 hours of unpaid care a week for the additional person. Those hours can happen at the same time as care for someone else. The additional person must also receive a qualifying benefit. Do not assume that supporting another relative creates an automatic extra award.
This can matter in a household where caring responsibilities overlap. Record who you support, the qualifying-benefit information and the care you provide. A combined household routine should be described as it actually happens. Do not artificially split simultaneous support into separate shifts simply to make a total look larger. The application concerns the stated conditions for each person, not the number of relatives living at the address.
Here is a calculation using the published rates, rather than invented work income: a full main award of £86.45, the £11.70 supplement and one eligible £10.40 additional-person payment total £108.55 per week. Multiplying that by 4 gives £434.20. This arithmetic assumes entitlement to all three components and no reduction to the main award.
The purpose of the calculation is to show what belongs in the discussion before adding paid work. It does not predict a decision if your earnings change. Ask Social Security Scotland how the linked awards would be treated in your circumstances. A possible extra work payment should not be compared only with the main benefit if your existing award also includes other components.
What records does a new self-employed carer need?
The work guidance distinguishes an established business from a new or substantially changed one. If you have traded for more than 12 months and recent earnings have not significantly changed, Social Security Scotland asks for your latest Self Assessment return or accounts. For trading under 12 months, or earnings that have changed significantly within the last 12 months, it asks for monthly income and expenses. Check which description fits your actual start and work pattern.
Start a clear ledger before the first paid order. Record the activity date, agreed compensation, commission, payout date and any own work-related expenditure. Save invoices and statements together. If a cost also relates to your household, keep an explanation of the business part you are asking to have considered. Recording something does not make it an allowed deduction; the assessing office decides how the evidence is used.
A simple monthly total is easier to explain when its underlying entries remain available. Mark whether an amount is a work receipt, a transfer between your own accounts or a benefit payment. Use your actual pounds records for the Scottish assessment. If a platform statement uses another currency, ask how the office wants that evidence presented, rather than selecting an exchange rate that makes the result fit below the ceiling.
What does an AirPost fee example add to the decision?
The AirPost calculator reference is in euros. Under the conditional assumption of 7 small parcels per week at its suggested fee of €2.25, the 4-week formula produces €63.00 in compensation. After 3% payout commission it gives €61.11, before own costs and personal tax. Constants and formula checked on 14 October 2026; this is no forecast of available orders.
The example demonstrates the platform deduction. It is not a pounds quote or a Scottish earnings assessment. You choose your fee and discuss the collaboration directly with the shop. According to AirPost’s product copy, the shop pays the label and supplies packaging materials. Keep the actual compensation and deductions for your own agreement. A platform calculator cannot confirm entitlement to a care benefit.
The other part of this example is time. Include receiving stock, checking instructions, printing labels and getting parcels to the appropriate service point. Compare the whole task with the care window you can reliably protect. A short packing task that requires an awkward extra trip can be a poor fit even when the compensation seems manageable. The UK packing-work article explains the operational questions in more detail.
What must you report before a small job becomes regular work?
Use the official types of changes to report page for your award. Starting or stopping work, changing earnings and changes to your caring situation can be relevant. Keep the message you send and the reply. If the assessing office requests later information, your first description should still match the activity you actually undertake.
- Identify each Scottish carer-payment component on your current award notice.
- Describe the proposed activity, likely work pattern and how care will remain covered.
- Ask what assessment period and currency evidence apply to your earnings.
- Prepare the accounts or monthly records requested for your stage of trading.
- Report relevant changes and agree limited shop capacity only after the unresolved points are clear.
Review the description if the collaboration expands or your care situation changes. Being able to skip a new request does not resolve orders already accepted or stock already held at home. Explain the operational change to the shop and the relevant award change to Social Security Scotland. Each party needs different information. Reliable records make both conversations easier without requiring you to share personal health details with a commercial customer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Carer Support Payment earnings limit?
The official work page checked on 14 October 2026 gives £204 a week in assessed take-home pay. Variable earnings may be averaged; ask which period and deductions apply to your circumstances.
Can I receive Carer Support Payment while self-employed?
Self-employment is included in the official work guidance. You must still meet the earnings and care conditions and provide the records requested for your business.
Is Scottish Carer Supplement automatic?
The eligibility guidance says it is paid automatically when you receive Carer Support Payment. Check your award notice and current rates rather than assuming a past lump-sum arrangement still applies.
How many hours are needed for Carer Additional Person Payment?
You need at least 20 weekly hours of unpaid care for the additional qualifying person, together with the other conditions. These hours can overlap with care for another person.
Does an AirPost euro calculation prove I am below the income threshold?
No. It illustrates platform compensation and commission. Social Security Scotland needs your actual work income and permitted deductions in the assessment it applies to you.
