In short

  • A side hustle for a UK nurse can use your registration, such as relevant teaching, or give you a separate practical task, such as parcel fulfilment. The choice matters because NMC revalidation requires 450 nursing practice hours over three years; unrelated side work does not automatically count.
  • The NMC also requires 35 hours of relevant CPD, including 20 participatory hours, over the three-year period. Paid work and CPD are different tests.
  • An employer’s professional indemnity covers that employment. Check each other area of nursing practice rather than assuming one arrangement covers everything.
  • A scenario of 10 small parcels per week gives €87.30 over four weeks after payout commission, before expenses and tax. The useful question is whether your changing rota allows the agreed handovers.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

The side job that fits a nurse on regular clinic hours may be impossible for someone rotating through nights. Before comparing ideas, decide what you need from the extra work: a use for your professional knowledge, a task you can complete without another clinical decision, or booked earnings for an agreed shift. Those are different aims, and they lead to different choices.

This page compares options without inventing an hourly wage for nursing content, tuition or agency work. Use the actual assignment and payment terms. It also separates earnings from the professional requirements that continue when you keep your registration. If you want to understand the physical job first, see packing parcels versus delivery driving.

Do you want more nursing work or a different kind of task?

Possible activities, not a promise of vacancies. A professional title alone does not qualify you for every listed assignment.

An additional clinical shift can have a clearly stated payment, but ask whether it solves the problem you have. If you want a break from patient-facing responsibility, replacing free time with more of the same work may not be the right fit. Conversely, starting an unrelated service introduces customer finding, administration and uncertain demand. Compare both sides with the actual work on offer.

Which side-work hours could count for NMC revalidation?

The NMC requires 450 practice hours for a nurse over the three years since joining or last renewing registration. Its definition includes work relying on your registered skills, knowledge and experience; this can extend beyond direct care to relevant management or teaching. The job title alone does not settle it. Record the actual activity and how it relates to your scope. NMC practice-hours guidance.

Packing a shop’s ordinary orders is a separate service. Being a nurse while doing it does not transform it into nursing practice. The same distinction deserves attention with writing: editing a general newsletter and undertaking professional nursing education are not automatically equivalent. If you plan to reduce your main nursing hours, check the practice requirement before counting a proposed side activity towards it.

Keep the earnings record separate from the practice log. The first shows fees, costs and payment dates. The second documents the activity relevant to registration. This stops a profitable month of unrelated work from disguising a shortfall in the professional hours you still need. Discuss uncertain activities with the appropriate professional contact before relying on them in a renewal application.

Does earning from teaching also meet the CPD requirement?

There is a separate NMC requirement for 35 hours of CPD relevant to your scope, with at least 20 involving participatory learning, during the three-year period. Records need to show the activity, dates, hours, relevance and evidence. Participatory learning involves interaction with other professionals and can happen online. A fee or a course certificate on its own does not establish that every requirement is met. NMC CPD requirements.

For a teaching assignment, distinguish what you deliver from what you learn. Preparation, professional discussion and a paid lesson may play different roles in your records. Set aside time to document any learning while the evidence is available. Do not build an earnings plan that assumes all preparation is billable or all working time becomes CPD; ask separately what the client pays for.

Will your existing indemnity cover another nursing role?

The NMC says NHS arrangements cover work done on the NHS employer’s behalf. For a combination of employed and self-employed practice, or more than one employer, each area needs an appropriate arrangement. Self-employed, consultant and agency work may require your own cover. The arrangement must fit the work and risks involved. NMC professional indemnity guidance.

Before accepting a clinical or professional teaching assignment, identify who provides cover and the scope it includes. Keep that confirmation with the agreement. Your normal work badge or membership payment is not the answer to the separate question about this assignment. For health writing, clarify whether you are providing professional review, general editing or another service, and check the responsibility that follows from the actual brief.

For unrelated parcel work, the relevant property question is different: the shop’s stock is in your home. AirPost’s copy says it does not insure that stock. Agree storage and responsibility with the shop, and check cover for goods belonging to someone else where needed. Nursing indemnity should not be treated as the insurance answer for an unrelated stock-handling service.

Can a parcel commitment survive both versions of your rota?

AirPost’s process is physical: the shop supplies products and packaging; you hold them, pack orders, print the labels and hand parcels to an agreed carrier. You agree your fee and the shop pays postage. The suggested small-parcel fee checked on 19 October 2026 was €2.25; the payout commission was 3%. These euro amounts are not a quoted sterling wage.

Ten parcels per week would mean 40 over four weeks and €87.30 after commission. Now test a disrupted rota: if actual completed work averages five parcels each week, the corresponding amount is €43.65. Neither volume is promised. Use actual currency conversion, transport, printing costs and tax to work out what remains for you.

The difference between those two rows is a useful reminder that a fee does not protect your volume. Do not accept a deadline on the assumption you can always pack after a night shift. Agree the days you can hand over and the latest time you can safely start a task. If the shop’s ordinary dispatch expectation cannot fit, declining the arrangement is a valid outcome.

Try the route while checking the actual carrier service. A parcel point beside the hospital may be convenient on day shifts and closed after a late finish. A locker near home may not accept the label used for an order. The shop needs your real handover pattern, not a general claim that you are flexible. The existing evening and weekend guide explains why packing time and dispatch time need separate checks.

What should you agree before the first paid task?

  1. Test the busiest rota first

Mark shifts, recovery, existing commitments and any professional learning. Offer only the availability that remains dependable.

  2. Define one small service

Choose a bounded writing brief, a limited teaching commitment or a small dispatch capacity. State response times and what is outside the agreement.

  3. Confirm responsibility and payment

Check the employer’s outside-work rules and any relevant cover. Agree payment, cancellation, expenses and the evidence of completion.

  4. Review actual earnings and disruption

Include unpaid messages, revisions, journeys and stock administration. Increase the work only if the full commitment fits alongside nursing.

Frequently asked questions

What side hustle can a nurse do from home in the UK?

Possibilities include relevant teaching, writing, a separate remote service or parcel fulfilment. Each needs its own demand, clear responsibilities and availability; a nursing qualification is not a guarantee of assignments.

Does a non-clinical nursing side job count as practice?

Some relevant teaching or management may qualify when it relies on registered skills and fits your scope. Unrelated work does not become nursing practice because you hold a registration. Check the activity against NMC guidance.

Does my NHS cover include private side work?

NMC guidance says an employer’s arrangement covers that employment. Confirm appropriate indemnity for each other area of professional practice rather than extending NHS cover by assumption.

Is parcel packing flexible enough for night shifts?

Only if you and the shop can agree dependable dispatch days. Having time to pack is insufficient if the required carrier point is closed when you can reach it.

Is extra nursing work always the highest-paying option?

There is no verified universal ranking here. Compare a real shift offer with real client terms, include travel and unpaid work, and consider whether another clinical commitment is what you want.
