In short

  • US eBay sellers pay for the label even when the buyer pays a shipping charge, and selling fees usually apply to that charge too. For a non-Store seller in most categories, the published rate is 13.6% up to the applicable threshold, plus $0.40 per order over $10; your category and account can change the calculation.
  • Weigh and measure the closed package before listing, including padding, the box and any inserts.
  • Calculated shipping depends on your package inputs and rate settings; it does not calculate your packing labor or profit.
  • A shipping charge that matches the label price can still leave materials and the fee on shipping unpaid.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A buyer paying shipping does not settle your postage bill directly. Your order has revenue coming in and shipping expenses going out. Compare those records before deciding whether a listing covers its delivery costs. This guide concerns US inventory sold on eBay.com and rules checked on October 14, 2026. The useful number is what remains from the shipping charge after applicable fees, compared with the actual cost of sending that particular packed order.

Why can buyer-paid shipping still cost you money?

The US selling-fee schedule generally includes buyer-paid shipping, handling and sales tax in the final value fee base. Its non-Store table lists 13.6% for most categories on the total amount up to $7,500, calculated per item. The separate order fee is $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above $10. Check category exceptions and your subscription before applying these figures.

Keep the fee on shipping distinct from the whole order fee. If you are assessing whether an extra shipping charge covers postage, calculate its incremental effect. If you are assessing the profit of the sale, include every applicable fee, item cost and shipping expense. Mixing these questions can make the same spreadsheet count a fixed fee twice or leave it out entirely. Name each column by what it measures, rather than calling every deduction “shipping.”

Your packaging purchase is another expense. A label receipt does not show the cost of the mailer you took from a carton, the protective insert, or the work needed to pack the item. Use your own invoices and packing arrangement for those amounts. Avoid copying a supply allowance from another seller whose products use different protection. A dense metal accessory and a delicate ornament can have similar selling prices while requiring quite different packing.

What information does the eBay shipping calculator need?

eBay’s calculator instructions use the package type, weight, dimensions, origin ZIP code and selected service. The buyer’s location changes the displayed calculated charge. Prepare the item in its actual shipping packaging before entering these details. Measuring the product itself misses the space occupied by protective material. The dimensions printed on your box order may also describe the interior rather than the outside of the completed parcel.

For repeat stock, save a tested packing specification with the SKU. Record which box and protection were measured, then check it when supplies change. For a used item that exists only once, pack provisionally before listing so you know the required shape. Keep the product accessible for inspection until it sells. That gives you reliable shipping inputs without pretending every future bundle will fit the same parcel.

Will the buyer see the same discounted rate you pay?

Check your account rather than inferring the answer from a tutorial’s date. eBay’s calculated-rate guidance describes standard, eBay discounted and custom discounted rate settings. It also says the discounted rate shown under that arrangement requires buying through eBay Labels. A buyer-facing price and a label purchased somewhere else need their own comparison, even when both screens use the same carrier name.

Open a listing preview for the destination you are reviewing, then compare the selected service with the label purchase screen using identical package details. If the figures differ, check the origin, dimensions, package type and rate setting before changing your product price. Save the inputs as well as the quote. A screenshot containing only a dollar figure cannot explain whether one quote used a larger box or a different service.

For flat shipping, you choose the buyer charge yourself. For free shipping, the shipping expense must be supported by the rest of the sale. Those choices can be sensible, but neither removes the carrier bill. Review products with expensive packing separately from products that use a simple mailer. If you spread shipping expense through product prices, check the result for bundles as well as individual sales so the same packaging saving is not counted twice.

How much shipping revenue would recover a $7.78 cost?

Here is a narrow calculation using a real published reference, rather than an invented eBay quote. The AirPost US-to-US options page, retrieved October 14, 2026, displayed an approximate USPS Ground Advantage starting amount of $7.78. The platform fee is included; the agreed sender payment is additional. This is a displayed starting reference, not a quote for your ZIP codes or an eBay label.

If a shipping charge were $7.78 and its incremental final value fee were 13.6%, that fee would be about $1.06. Only about $6.72 would remain against the $7.78 cost, before materials or preparation. Dividing $7.78 by 0.864 gives approximately $9.005, or $9.01 when rounded upward to the next cent. That calculation isolates percentage-fee recovery; it does not include the fixed order fee, tax-related fee effects or any other sale expense.

Replace the starting amount with your actual eligible service quote, and add the expenses your own arrangement requires. Do not add the platform fee again to an AirPost amount that already includes it. If a sender packs your stock, obtain their payment and the packing instructions before estimating the full cost. AirPost’s fulfillment explanation describes that separate stock-and-packing arrangement; it does not establish an eBay connector or eligibility for a marketplace label.

Which shipping charges can you put in the listing?

eBay’s selling practices policy allows reasonable handling connected to shipping, but says a free-shipping destination cannot carry additional shipping, handling or packaging charges. Decide your cost recovery before the purchase. The buyer should see the delivery arrangement they are agreeing to. Discovering a packing expense after payment is a problem to resolve, rather than a reason to attach an undisclosed handling bill.

Higher-value orders can require a different service budget. The same policy requires signature confirmation when the total order cost, including items, shipping and tax, is $750 or more. Price the appropriate service using the actual order total. A product below that figure can cross it once the other amounts are included. Keep the purchased service and its evidence attached to the order so a packing helper can identify the requirement before dispatch.

Small collectible orders may need a different decision entirely. The existing Standard Envelope card workflow explains eligibility and flexible packaging. Do not compare its specialized mail method with an ordinary parcel solely by the cheapest displayed price. Start with the sold item, its required protection and the permitted shipping method. Then compare costs inside the methods that actually fit.

How do you check whether your listings recovered shipping costs?

Match each completed order to its buyer shipping charge, label transaction and any later carrier adjustment. Add your recorded material and preparation expense, then compare with the amount recovered through shipping and product pricing. Keep refunds visible rather than deleting the original purchase row. If you refunded shipping to the buyer, the original carrier expense may still exist. A ledger that preserves both events makes that difference understandable.

Review exceptions by cause: changed package, wrong origin, service substitution, return, or missing handling recovery. Correct the relevant listing input or packing specification. For a wider accounting method, use average shipping cost per order. Your account’s observed results are more useful than declaring one delivery format cheapest across an inventory whose products, destinations and sale values differ.

Frequently asked questions

Do sellers pay shipping on eBay?

The seller purchases postage. A buyer-paid shipping charge contributes revenue toward that expense, while free shipping leaves you to recover it through the sale. Applicable selling fees and packing costs still need to be included.

Does the shipping money go to the seller?

Buyer-paid shipping forms part of the transaction amount. It is not a separate payment that automatically settles the carrier invoice without fees or other deductions.

How much should I charge for shipping on eBay?

Use your packed-order quote, materials, preparation and applicable fees. The $9.01 calculation here covers only a $7.78 reference cost after a 13.6% percentage fee; it is not a recommended universal shipping charge.

Is the eBay shipping estimate accurate?

It depends on accurate package and origin details, the selected service and your rate setting. Compare the listing and label screens using the same inputs, then reconcile the purchased label with later adjustments.

Can I charge a packaging fee with free shipping?

eBay’s selling practices policy says additional shipping, handling or packaging charges cannot be imposed for a destination advertised with free shipping. Include your expected expenses when setting the sale terms.
