In short

  • On eBay UK, Time Away allows sales for up to 15 days or pauses sales for up to 30 days. A pause hides fixed-price listings, but auction listings remain purchasable; audit offers and older orders separately before leaving.
  • Some offer and delivery formats do not receive an updated delivery date. A visible absence message does not fix those exceptions.
  • Arrange return decisions and buyer-message cover even when new fixed-price sales are paused.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

The dangerous order during a break is often the one you forgot could happen. You may have hidden fixed-price listings but left an auction running, or an offer sent earlier may be accepted while nobody is packing. Time Away helps with ordinary selling, but it is not a complete map of your account. Use the setting after making a list of active selling formats and unfinished commitments. This guide concerns a business seller using eBay UK, not a buyer waiting for one parcel.

Should you allow sales, or pause them completely?

The choice depends on what can happen to the physical items. If nobody can reach them until you return, assess a pause rather than promising ordinary dispatch. If you allow sales, reserve time after the break for the accumulated work. If a replacement can ship as normal, confirm each listing against stock they actually hold. Your absence and the item’s absence from a working packing location are different problems. Do not solve the second with a message about the first.

Read the official UK Time Away page when choosing the mode. It gives the 15-day allow-sales and 30-day pause-sales limits. It also warns that same-day changes can take hours to update listings. Schedule with a practical buffer and check the buyer view before considering new selling stopped. Treat the maximum as a platform limit, not as proof that your customers are willing to wait that long.

Which offers can slip through the ordinary date adjustment?

eBay lists exceptions including Second Chance Offers, auto-accepted offers, pending counter-offers and seller-initiated offers accepted during Time Away. It also names local or in-store collection, the Global Shipping Programme and digital items. Review those categories against your account rather than treating an absence banner as an updated promise. For an auction, the pause does not make the item unavailable. This distinction matters if the item is unique and remains locked inside your own home.

Create an offers list before your final packing session. Include what is still open, what could be accepted, and where the item is. Where changes are available, assess them using the actual listing controls and current eBay rules. Where they are not, make a plan to honour the commitment or resolve it through the proper route. Do not try to erase a difficult sale by marking an unavailable item dispatched. That adds inaccurate evidence to an already unresolved order.

For an unexpected illness, work from the nearest deadline outwards. Identify auctions about to end and offers already accepted, then inspect ordinary fixed-price traffic. Ask your replacement to check order records rather than interpreting screenshots of the holiday setting. You need one owner for each sold item and one clear instruction about who may contact the buyer. Two people independently promising different dispatch dates can create more work than a prompt, consistent response.

How do you set the break dates around real packing time?

Separate the last day you can pack from the last day a buyer can order. Your return date is not necessarily your first full dispatch day either. Travel, stock checking and a pile of questions can occupy that day. Use the period displayed in your account, then test the live listing behaviour. If dates or messages appear wrong, investigate before promoting the listings. An announcement to customers should follow the working setting rather than substitute for it.

  1. List your last workable dispatch tasks

Finish paid orders that can leave before the break. Identify anything waiting for payment, personalisation, stock or an address decision.

  2. Choose the mode from available capacity

Pause when ordinary new orders cannot be handled. Allow sales only when delayed dispatch is workable or physical cover is confirmed.

  3. Inspect exceptional selling formats

Check auctions, outstanding offers and collection arrangements against the same capacity decision.

  4. Verify the buyer view

Allow for the setting’s update time. Check a real fixed-price listing and an auction separately, without placing an unwanted purchase.

  5. Reserve a reopening session

Inspect backlog, returned stock and buyer requests before restoring ordinary dispatch promises and promotional traffic.

An automatic response should state when messages will be reviewed and how existing-order requests are handled. Avoid wording that says every order waits until your return if some have already shipped. Attach decisions to their order records. If a colleague monitors the account, agree the actions they may take and the issues that must be escalated. A response that acknowledges absence is useful, but a request needing a refund or cancellation still needs a person to decide.

Who handles returns while fixed-price listings are hidden?

New-order availability is only one part of the account. In eBay’s return-handling guidance, the seller normally needs to refund within 2 business days after receiving the returned item; eBay may refund on the seller’s behalf if this is not done. The page also explains when a party can ask eBay to step in after 3 business days. Check the actual request and its displayed deadlines rather than postponing everything until the holiday ends.

Give returned parcels a receiving plan. If a parcel arrives at an empty address, somebody still needs to resolve receipt and the account action. A local packer may be able to receive and photograph it if you agree that task, but they do not automatically know whether it is the right item or whether a deduction is permitted. Keep it outside sellable stock until the relevant checks are done. Record who may issue the refund and who merely reports what arrived.

The eBay UK seller standards policy evaluates seller performance on the 20th of each month. Taking time off is not a reason to leave an existing case unanswered. Put case notifications in the same daily review as dispatch exceptions. Your cover person should be able to distinguish a buyer asking for an update from a case with a required response. This is a workload plan, not a promise that a holiday setting protects every performance measure.

What does backup packing cost for stock someone else can reach?

For a small parcel, AirPost’s recommended packing fee is €2.25 and its platform fee is €0.85. These shared constants were checked on 13 October 2026. Together they give €3.10 per shipment before the underlying carrier price, material and stock-transfer costs. The sender’s agreed amount replaces the recommendation in your actual budget. The platform fee is already inside an AirPost published label price.

A calculation for an illustrative group of 5 eligible small-parcel orders therefore gives €15.50 for that handling portion. This is arithmetic, not a claim about your sales volume or a complete fulfilment quote. Add your real transport price and any separately agreed work. There is no useful saving to calculate for an item that remains inaccessible; the replacement needs the exact sold stock before the arrangement can fulfil anything.

Keep the eBay order record consistent with the real dispatch location and service you use. AirPost connects you to people who hold shop stock, pack it and hand parcels over; this article does not promise an automatic eBay holiday integration. Give the packer a clear, controlled order instruction and collect the actual handover information. For choosing a service, use the UK business-seller courier guide, then check availability for the packing address.

What should you check when Time Away ends?

Compare the sold queue with physical stock before judging whether listings look normal again. Give overdue or exceptional work priority, then confirm that returned items have not been relisted as available without inspection. eBay notes that fixed-price search visibility can take hours to return. Do not create duplicate listings simply because search has not yet caught up. Check the setting and direct listing first, and keep track of what you changed.

Finally compare promised postage with the service you can actually use that day. A stock count, a working printer and a reachable drop-off location are more useful than an automatic return-to-office message. Check flat-rate versus calculated eBay postage if your temporary arrangement changed parcel sizes or routes. Retain the holiday audit for the next break, updating its listing formats and names rather than assuming last time’s arrangement still works.

Frequently asked questions

How long can eBay Time Away last?

The UK help page states up to 15 days when allowing sales and up to 30 days when pausing them. Choose within those limits based on your actual ability to complete the work.

Does Time Away stop auction sales?

No. eBay says auction-style listings remain visible and purchasable during a pause. Inspect ending dates and dispatch cover separately.

Why did an offer order keep its earlier delivery date?

Several offer formats are exceptions to the automatic delivery-date update. Inspect the offer type, order promise and current handling arrangement instead of relying on the ordinary listing banner.

Can I stop checking messages while away?

Arrange cover for buyer requests and cases. An automatic response acknowledges your absence but does not complete an action required by a case or return.

Why are paused listings still visible?

Same-day changes can take hours, and auctions behave differently from fixed-price listings. Check the format and allow the documented update time before making further changes.
