In short
- A foreign shop selling furnishing items directly to private customers in France can be the French EPR producer. The €100,000 excluding-VAT turnover threshold described for delivery take-back is a separate test; it does not itself exempt a small furniture producer from registration and eco-contribution.
- Check the furniture sector covered by your unique identifier rather than assuming an existing packaging identifier covers your products.
- Link every French-market furniture model to its product code, applicable contribution and reporting period.
- Arrange any required old-furniture take-back separately from dispatch of the new order.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
Your shop sells flat-pack furniture from outside France. A marketplace asks for an EPR identifier, while your delivery partner asks whether the customer needs old furniture removed. These are related questions, but one answer does not resolve both. Identify the company placing the furniture on the French market, record its furniture-sector coverage and then assess delivery take-back. This article follows that sequence for an overseas webshop. It focuses on the products themselves; assess the packaging around them separately under the applicable packaging rules.
Am I the producer if I sell furniture made by someone else?
Ecomaison’s 2026 member guide includes foreign wholesalers, distributors and distance sellers selling directly to private customers in France among the furniture marketers. It also lists French manufacturers, importers and own-brand distributors. Start with the actual seller and sales arrangement. A manufacturer abroad is not automatically the entity fulfilling your French obligations. Keep the legal company behind your webshop and the company shown on the customer’s invoice connected. If another business imports and supplies the goods in France, document that chain before assuming your direct-selling scenario still applies.
Ask your supplier which French-market obligations it performs for the exact range you buy. A general statement that it sells throughout Europe gives you little to verify. Request the responsible company name, relevant sector and evidence connecting the range to that arrangement. Retain the answer with your purchasing records. For private-label furniture, confirm how changing the brand affects the assessment. The physical factory and the company placing a product on the market are different entries in the dossier, even when they are owned by the same group.
Does my existing EPR number cover the furniture sector?
Ecomaison’s identifier guidance says it passes membership information to ADEME, which assigns the unique identifier, or IDU. Its verification service shows the sectors for which a company is registered. Check that result rather than keeping a bare number in your marketplace settings. A company can have obligations in more than one sector. Write down the covered furniture sector, legal entity and membership evidence. This prevents a packaging registration from being used as the only evidence for your furniture range.
The member guide requires the identifier in your general terms and conditions of sale. Review the French-facing version and the documents your checkout actually supplies. Copying a number into one marketplace account does not check the terms used on your independent shop. Keep a record of the published version and the identifier it contains. If your company structure changes, verify the new entity’s coverage rather than simply preserving the old storefront text. Treat administrative consistency as part of launch preparation, alongside product photographs and assembly instructions.
What belongs in a furniture product dossier?
| Record | Question it answers | Practical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model and supplied components | What is actually placed on the French market? | Supplier specification and included-parts list |
| French producer identity and sector | Which company and EPR stream cover the product? | Membership confirmation and identifier verification |
| Applicable product code | Which contribution classification is used? | Current Ecomaison coding tool and saved result |
| Material, dimensions and weight | Does the chosen code match this version? | Technical sheet linked to the model revision |
| Market quantity and reporting period | Which declaration includes the supplied items? | French-market ledger with adjustment references |
| Delivery and take-back arrangement | What can the customer request for the old item? | Confirmed service scope and customer information |
Use the furniture product scope and coding tool for the actual supplied item. A shop category such as “home” or “accessories” is not a contribution code. Check uncertain products before grouping them with a familiar model. Store the source document version with your decision. If a material or weight changes, the product photo may remain the same while the contribution assessment needs review. Ask the eco-organisation about unclear assemblies or mixed products using a specification, rather than deciding from the marketing name.
Can I use the simplified contribution method automatically?
The 2026 member guide describes both product-code reporting and simplified arrangements, with eligibility conditions. Its general summary also mentions a turnover-based option. Confirm which current method applies to your company before choosing a shortcut. An option described for eligible businesses is not a universal contribution rate for every furniture product. Ecomaison’s tariff page provides the applicable-year guides and code generators. Save the accepted method with your membership file, then apply it consistently rather than mixing methods whenever a particular order looks cheaper.
Check effective dates carefully. On 14 October 2026, the tariff page already lists documents for both 2026 and 2027. A newer publication date does not mean the later-year schedule applies to current orders. Put the effective year beside every saved code or rate. If you prepare next year’s product prices now, keep the planning values separate from the values used for current declarations. This is particularly useful for a catalogue that stays online across the year end and receives orders during both periods.
Your own price worksheet should separate the product amount, applicable eco-contribution, delivery and any other agreed charges. Ecomaison’s member guide has a dedicated coding and display section; follow its instructions for the chosen arrangement. Do not invent a flat charge because your webshop software has only one tax or surcharge field. First establish the correct treatment, then configure the commercial documents accordingly. Test the displayed order and invoice together so a checkout update does not silently remove a required line.
When does online delivery create a take-back obligation?
The 2026 guide presents one-for-one take-back for furniture sales with delivery using a €100,000 excluding-VAT turnover threshold. It separately describes marketplace third-party seller requirements and customer information. Review the precise sales channel and threshold calculation for your business; do not substitute your worldwide turnover or the floor area of a warehouse. This assessment differs from producer membership. A business below the delivery threshold can still need its producer obligations assessed and fulfilled.
Where take-back applies, agree a workable service for an equivalent old item and explain it before the order is completed. Ask your partner which items, access conditions and locations it covers. Record how customers request the service and how the instruction reaches the collection team. A note left in the shop’s support inbox is not an instruction automatically available to a parcel driver. Keep the new-goods delivery and old-goods collection connected by order reference, but give each an explicit status so neither is assumed complete because the other happened.
Plan for an unsuccessful collection. Record whom the customer contacts and who investigates an excluded or inaccessible item. Have the service partner confirm the agreed procedure instead of promising every collection under every condition. Ordinary commercial returns need their own path as well: an unwanted new desk coming back to your shop is different from an old desk collected under take-back. Mixing those flows can cause a stock error, an incorrect refund or a customer receiving instructions intended for a different service.
Which reporting period should a returned item belong to?
Ecomaison’s guide describes declarations of completed market-launch periods. Maintain that view separately from courier dispatch dates and shop revenue reports. Your record should show which French-market supply was declared and any adjustment connected to it. Ask the organisation for its correction procedure when a sale is cancelled, returned or moved to a different destination. Do not assume the month a parcel comes back automatically determines the period to change. Keep the original declared transaction reference available to the person preparing the correction.
This also matters when stock is split across locations. Moving your own furniture from one storage address to another is not the same record as a customer sale. Keep inventory movement, French-market supply and declaration status in distinct fields. That way you can explain the declaration without using the carrier’s total parcel count as a substitute. For the physical side, see shipping to France without a French warehouse. Confirm the EPR role from the sales chain even when the dispatch location changes.
How do I budget parcel preparation alongside furniture EPR?
For an order that fits the normal parcel format, AirPost’s platform fee €0.85 plus the recommended sender preparation fee €3.00 totals €3.85. These euro amounts come from the AirPost constants checked on 14 October 2026. The calculation excludes postage, packing materials, furniture eco-contribution and old-item collection. Use the agreed preparation fee for your actual order. Larger furniture needs its own verified handling and transport arrangement.
AirPost connects shops with senders who receive stock and prepare and dispatch agreed orders. Use local order preparation for a suitable, agreed parcel range, and define the product and packing instructions clearly. It does not establish your furniture-sector registration or automatically add old-furniture collection to a delivery. The separate article on shipping flat-pack furniture covers transport preparation. Keep that physical assessment beside the French compliance dossier so an accepted product code does not become an assumed carrier acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Does French furniture EPR apply to an overseas online seller?
Ecomaison’s member guide includes foreign distance sellers selling directly to private customers in France. Assess the company and actual sales arrangement before relying on a supplier’s coverage.
Is a packaging EPR identifier enough for furniture?
Verify the registered sectors for the legal company. A number stored for packaging alone does not establish furniture-sector coverage.
Does low turnover remove all French furniture EPR duties?
Separate producer responsibility from delivery take-back thresholds and contribution-method eligibility. Those tests answer different questions.
Can my normal parcel courier collect the old furniture?
Only rely on a specifically agreed service. New-goods dispatch does not by itself establish an old-item collection arrangement.
Should I use the newest tariff file for current orders?
Check its effective year and date. A published future-year tariff belongs in planning until it becomes applicable.
