In short

  • For a part-time evening job from home, agree both the work location and exact hours: remote alone does not promise evening-only work. In England, Scotland and Wales, employees can request flexible working from day 1, make 2 statutory requests in any 12 months, and normally receive a decision within 2 months.
  • The right is to request a change, rather than automatic approval of your preferred evenings. Negotiate essential availability before accepting a new role.
  • Ask separately about daytime training, meetings, extra shifts and any requirement to attend a workplace. These can change whether the role fits your existing week.
  • Self-organised parcel work is a different arrangement: AirPost describes your own rate and capacity, with payment for completed work and no promise of fixed paid evening hours.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You can work on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, but you cannot take calls during your day job. A listing labelled remote and part-time looks suitable until the interview reveals daytime meetings or a rotating timetable. That is the question to settle: can the whole role fit the hours you actually have? This article explains how to discuss a fixed pattern and use the flexible-working process in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has different rules, as the government guidance makes clear.

What does a remote evening vacancy actually promise?

Read three separate parts of the offer: place, number of hours and timing. Home-based describes a place. Part-time describes fewer hours than the relevant full-time pattern. Evening work describes when at least some work happens. None of those labels, by itself, tells you that every task can be completed on your chosen two evenings. Ask for the complete pattern, including training and occasional duties, before comparing the role with another way to earn.

Use a concrete availability boundary. You might be available from 18:30 to 21:30 on two named weekdays and unavailable at other times. That is an illustrative six-hour weekly window, not a recommendation about how much you should work. Ask whether the employer needs continuous cover inside it, a minimum number of shifts, or a response outside it. A job can be a good opportunity and still fail this particular test. Finding that out early saves you from promising time you do not have.

Part of the arrangementDetail to agreeWhy it matters for two evenings
WorkplaceFully home-based or particular office attendanceA daytime trip may fall outside your availability
Working daysNamed weekdays or a rotating rotaPart-time does not necessarily protect your other evenings
Start and finishExact times and how unfinished work is handed overA nominal finish needs a workable closing process
Training and meetingsTimes, format and any compulsory attendanceThe main shifts may fit while the supporting duties do not
Extra workHow additional shifts are offered or requiredAvailability should stay consistent with the contract
Response expectationsWhether messages need attention outside shiftsA short shift should not conceal a much longer commitment

Can you ask for evening-only hours before your first day?

You can discuss your availability while applying and seek an agreed pattern before accepting. The statutory right described by GOV.UK is available to employees from their first day in a job. Do not rely on a future request to make an otherwise unsuitable offer fit. If evening-only work is essential, make that constraint clear during recruitment and ask for the resulting arrangement in the offer and contract.

For an existing role, identify which change you need. It might be fewer hours, different working days, a later start or permission to work at home. Those changes are related but distinct. An employer agreeing to homeworking has not necessarily agreed to a reduced working week. Likewise, reduced hours do not automatically remove an office attendance requirement. Describe the full pattern together so the employer can assess an arrangement you would actually be able to carry out.

What belongs in a statutory flexible-working request?

The government application guidance says to write or email the employer. Include the date, say that it is a statutory flexible-working request, explain the desired change and its proposed start date, and state whether and when you made a previous request. Your employer may have a standard form. Keep a copy and evidence of when it was received, since the date starts the decision timetable.

  1. Describe the complete pattern

Set out the location, named evenings, start and finish times, weekly hours and proposed start date. Include any change needed for meetings or training.

  2. Identify the request correctly

Use the statutory wording and required information from GOV.UK. Record previous requests accurately and follow the employer’s submission process.

  3. Prepare a practical discussion

Consider task handovers and availability that you can genuinely offer. Be ready to discuss alternatives, without accepting a pattern that falls outside your actual window.

  4. Record the decision and implementation

Keep the written outcome. If approved, check the changed contract, effective date and rota against the arrangement that was agreed.

You do not need to offer open-ended flexibility to make the request sound cooperative. Suggest only alternatives that you can deliver. If one different evening works, say which one. If you can attend a one-off session by prior arrangement, explain that limited possibility rather than promising daytime availability. Your aim is a usable agreement. A compromise that looks helpful in a meeting but repeatedly conflicts with your main job will be difficult for both sides to maintain.

How long can the employer take, and what happens after approval?

The government guidance gives the employer two months to make a decision, unless you agree a longer period. It also says employees can make two applications in any twelve-month period. Before refusing, the employer must discuss the request with you. Record any agreed extension rather than assuming silence means approval. During the process, continue to follow the working arrangement that actually applies until a change has been agreed and taken effect.

The guidance after an application says the written agreement should set out the changes and start date. The contract should be updated as soon as possible, and no later than 28 days after approval. Compare the updated terms with the discussion. If the arrangement was meant to have a review or limited trial, check that both parties recorded those details. Do not assume an informal comment about trying evenings settles the long-term contract.

Keep the practical details with the formal outcome: who updates the rota, how tasks pass to another shift and where you report a scheduling error. When the first rota arrives, compare it with the agreed working days and times. Raise a mismatch promptly with the person responsible. That small check helps distinguish an administrative mistake from a disagreement about the arrangement. You should not have to reconstruct the whole discussion from memory each time a new timetable appears.

Can a business refuse because it has little work in the evening?

Yes, a request can be refused for a permitted business reason. GOV.UK includes insufficient work during the proposed times, inability to meet customer demand, effects on quality or performance, and difficulty reorganising work. The right to request does not require the business to invent evening tasks. If the objection concerns a particular duty, ask what alternative pattern could address it. Keep the discussion tied to the tasks and hours, rather than treating remote work as proof that any schedule should be possible.

For example, a role that handles live daytime enquiries may not become evening-only simply because the computer is at home. Work that can be handed over might allow a different discussion. These are questions about the actual role, not promises about a sector. Ask the employer to explain its reason in relation to your proposal and consider the appeal arrangements if needed. Sometimes the outcome is that another vacancy fits better. You can then search with the exact constraints you have established.

Would packing shop orders fit the same evening window?

AirPost describes a sender keeping a shop’s stock, printing labels, packing orders and handing them to a carrier. You set your rate and capacity and agree shipping arrangements with the shop. See earn from home for the tasks. This is not an advertised employee rota with a statutory flexible-working request to AirPost. The legal status of the real arrangement needs to be correct; a platform label does not determine employment rights by itself.

Consider twelve small parcels each week as a calculation scenario, with no promised demand. At the suggested €2.25 fee per small parcel, the AirPost four-week function gives €105 after 3% payout commission. Own costs and tax have not been deducted. The fee and function were checked in the product constants on 14 October 2026. This calculation is in euros, as specified by AirPost; it is not a sterling wage or a promised exchange rate.

The six-hour availability example above is a time ceiling you offered, not evidence that twelve parcels require six hours. Measure all the work if you agree a small trial: checking stock, handling messages, packing, printing and travelling to drop off. The shop supplies packaging or you agree another arrangement in chat. Do not compare a fee after commission with an employee’s hourly wage as though both include the same duties and rights. They need separate cost and time calculations.

Most shops, according to the product copy, want an order sent the next working day. If your only free time is on two evenings, clarify the next carrier handover before accepting stock. Check the actual location and label service rather than assuming any locker will work. The existing evening and weekend side-hustle guide explains that operational fit. Use it after settling the contract question: who decides your hours, what work you owe and what income is actually promised?

Frequently asked questions

Are part-time jobs from home always flexible about evenings?

No. Check the exact days, hours, workplace and supporting duties. Remote and part-time do not guarantee that all work can happen on your preferred evenings.

Can I request evening-only work from my first day?

Employees in England, Scotland and Wales can make a statutory flexible-working request from day one. It is a right to request, not guaranteed approval. Northern Ireland has different rules.

How many flexible-working requests can I make?

The GOV.UK guidance allows two statutory applications in any twelve-month period. Include details of previous requests when submitting a new one.

How soon must my employer decide on evening hours?

Normally within two months, unless you agree a longer period. If approved, check the agreed start date and the corresponding contract changes.

Can I pack parcels instead of taking a fixed evening job?

You can assess that different arrangement, but check stock space, printing, total time and carrier handover. AirPost describes an agreed fee per parcel and your own capacity; it does not promise paid evening shifts.
