FSC packaging: what does the label mean for box buying?

Buy FSC packaging with the right label, supplier certificate and invoice claim. A UK shop checklist separates fibre sourcing from recycling and costs.

In short

  • FSC packaging labels describe the sourcing of forest-based materials through 3 different claims: FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled. For a box purchase, specify the claim you need, verify the supplier’s relevant certification and retain sales documents identifying the certified article.
  • FSC Recycled does not mean that every component of a shipping box is recycled: the label’s claim concerns its forest-based materials.
  • A supplier having a certificate does not identify every product it sells as certified. Match the claim to your particular order.
  • Compare approved boxes and their documented purchase costs; certification does not supply a universal box price or shipping discount.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A UK shop buying boxes may see an FSC logo on a supplier’s website, on a sample or beside a product photograph. Those appearances can answer different questions. You need to know what you are buying, what claim accompanies it and who is authorised to apply the label. Start with a precise purchasing requirement rather than a broad instruction to buy green boxes. That makes the order easier to check and keeps your customer description tied to the material actually delivered.

What do FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled mean?

The official FSC UK label guide distinguishes the forest-based inputs. FSC 100% means those materials come from FSC-certified forests. FSC Recycled means they have been verified as entirely reclaimed, whether before or after consumer use. FSC Mix allows forest-based inputs from certified forests, verified recycled material or controlled wood. Controlled wood is assessed for unacceptable sourcing risks; it is not itself forest material from an FSC-certified forest. The labels are therefore different sourcing descriptions, rather than interchangeable artwork.

Interpret the authorised label and order documents together. The table does not establish the source of non-forest components such as a plastic window.

For your purchasing decision, write the requirement in words. If you specifically want a reclaimed-fibre option, ask for that rather than accepting whichever FSC label the supplier offers. If your policy permits several claims, record which one you chose and why. A change between labels should be treated as a change to the approved article information. The box may still be suitable, but its description and supporting records need to reflect the actual alternative.

Does FSC Recycled cardboard have to be post-consumer?

FSC UK explains that FSC Recycled paper products have no minimum post-consumer input requirement, while all forest-based inputs must be verified as reclaimed. A box labelled FSC Recycled is therefore not automatically made entirely from paper collected after households used it. If post-consumer content matters to your purchasing policy, request a separate supported statement about that characteristic. Do not turn the label alone into a more specific percentage claim.

Keep the material claim separate from the entire assembled package. A cardboard box might also include tape, a window or an attached accessory. Your supplier should identify which article is certified and how the label applies. The appropriate customer wording follows that scope. Saying that your box uses FSC Recycled forest-based material is a different statement from saying that every substance in the parcel is recycled. Use the documented description, especially when a packaging bundle contains several materials.

How do you check an FSC packaging supplier?

FSC UK’s purchasing guidance tells buyers to check that the supplier’s certificate is valid and covers the relevant product category. It also asks for delivery notes or invoices identifying the certified products, the FSC claim and the supplier’s certificate code. For printed materials, it directs buyers to an FSC-certified printer and an appropriate authorised label. These checks connect a certificate to a purchase, rather than treating a general supplier statement as evidence for everything in its catalogue.

  1. Identify the article

Record the box reference, size, construction and required sourcing claim in your request for quotation.

  2. Check the supplier record

Use FSC’s official certificate search, reached from its purchasing guide, and confirm the relevant product scope.

  3. Specify the documentation

Ask in advance for the certified article and claim to be identifiable on the delivery note or invoice.

  4. Approve the physical sample

Match the supplied box and its label to the agreed article. Resolve unexplained substitutions before ordering more.

  5. Keep the evidence together

Retain the order, article specification and corresponding sales documents as one purchasing record.

The label’s trademark licence code and the supplier’s certificate code serve different record purposes. FSC UK shows a certificate-code example in its guidance; do not guess the code from a company name or substitute a random number from the packaging artwork. Ask the supplier to identify both where relevant. If the company selling to you uses a trading name, make sure you can explain how that name relates to the documentation you checked. A saved supplier screenshot alone leaves these questions unresolved.

Can you put the FSC logo on your own printed boxes?

FSC UK states that an FSC label can only be applied under a valid FSC certificate, with its use authorised by the certificate holder’s accredited certification body. For a shop commissioning print, the practical route is to ask the certified supplier to handle the correct label and approval as part of the job. Include this in the print brief before the artwork is finalised. Buying paper or boxes with a claim does not make an unreviewed logo design a complete labelling process.

Keep your branding artwork and the certification label distinguishable in the approval record. Ask which version is approved, which article it belongs to and how later changes will be reviewed. When you change your box size or move printing to a new supplier, carry the requirement into the new quotation. Do not assume the old artwork’s approval settles a different supply arrangement. This avoids receiving a branded batch whose material and documents no longer match the version your shop describes.

Is FSC packaging recyclable or compostable?

The FSC labels above address forest-based sourcing. Your recycling decision still needs the packaging composition and the receiving waste stream. Ask about coatings, attached components and the material of any lining. If a supplier makes a separate recyclability claim, request the evidence and disposal instruction for the finished article. Keep that claim in a separate field from FSC certification so that a sourcing certificate is not used as the only answer to an end-of-life question.

Apply the same separation to compostability. A sourcing label is not the specification you need to choose compostable materials. You can approve a fibre-sourcing claim and still need further information before giving customers a disposal instruction. For a shop with several packaging options, maintain a short article card showing the exact claim, composition and supported disposal wording. That card lets a different member of the team reorder accurately without expanding an environmental statement beyond its evidence.

How should a UK shop compare certified box costs?

Compare the same approved physical requirements before comparing the sourcing options. Include dimensions, board quality, closure, print and delivery quantity. Request an alternative that meets your policy, then compare its actual quotation with the existing article. FSC does not give you a universal premium to put in a budget. A claimed percentage increase taken from an unrelated box or printer would be a poor substitute for the offered prices and delivered quantities.

Separate the first purchase from a repeat order. Artwork approval, sampling or other fixed items may appear in the quotation; ask which recur and which are included in the price. When the box is supplied to another packing location, include the actual delivery arrangement in both alternatives. An order costing less at your own address may cost more to distribute. Record the assumptions without assigning a fictional fee to the extra work.

For a transport reference, AirPost’s carrier-only index, retrieved on 10 October 2026, shows €2.96 for Great Britain → Great Britain at 2 kg. The index reports euros, so this is a euro planning observation, not a sterling checkout quote. For a suitable small parcel, adding the platform fee of €0.85 and recommended preparation fee of €2.25 gives €6.06 before packaging and stock transport. Use the sender’s agreed fee in an actual budget.

An illustrative batch of 30 eligible parcels gives €181.80 on that basis. If the actual certified-box purchase allocated to those orders is C and the alternative is A, the two budgets are €181.80 plus C and €181.80 plus A, with other equivalent costs added consistently. This calculation does not supply a box price or a certificate premium. Check the packed size, weight and eligible service, and obtain the currency-specific quote for the real booking.

What happens when your sender receives a substitute box?

In AirPost’s local fulfilment arrangement, your shop supplies an agreed stock batch and its own packaging to a sender. Include the approved box reference and the material claim in the handover. Ask for an unexplained substitute to be reported before it becomes the routine packaging. The person preparing your orders should be able to recognise the approved article, while your shop retains the supplier records that establish its sourcing claim.

A visual match is useful but cannot replace the purchasing documents. Keep the box reference on the replenishment request and attach the relevant delivery record to each new supply batch. If an alternative is approved, update your article card and any customer-facing description that depends on the changed claim. The per-parcel shipping budget guide helps with the wider cost decision; your FSC check belongs specifically to the material you order and deliver.

Frequently asked questions

What is the meaning of FSC Mix packaging?

Its forest-based materials are eligible certified, verified recycled or controlled inputs. It is different from both FSC 100% and FSC Recycled. Request the exact claim for the article you are buying.

Is FSC recycled cardboard entirely post-consumer?

Not necessarily. FSC UK states that paper products have no minimum post-consumer input requirement under FSC Recycled, although their forest-based inputs must be verified as reclaimed.

Is FSC packaging recyclable?

Check composition and the appropriate waste stream separately. The FSC sourcing claim does not describe every coating or non-forest component of the finished package.

Can any supplier print the FSC packaging logo?

FSC UK requires an on-product label to be applied under a valid certificate with authorised use. For commissioned printing, use its guidance to check the certified printer and appropriate label approval.

Does the worked shipping example include certified boxes?

No. It gives a dated euro-denominated transport basis with platform and recommended preparation fees. Add the documented material purchases allocated to your own orders.
