In short
- A UK maternity side hustle depends on which payment you receive: genuine self-employed work does not affect SMP, while the 39-week Maternity Allowance rules allow 10 working days during the allowance period. Even half an hour can use a whole MA keeping-in-touch day.
- The same 24 parcels could involve 2, 6 or 12 working dates; parcel count alone cannot tell you whether you remain within the MA limit.
- A job with a new employer, work for your existing employer and independent services require different checks.
- Arrange dispatch deadlines around your confirmed availability; a benefit rule does not let you delay a shop’s accepted orders.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You may have time for a few orders while your baby sleeps, but your bank statement might describe your maternity income simply as a payment. Find the award letter or payslip before deciding what work to accept. Statutory Maternity Pay, usually shortened to SMP, comes through an employer. Maternity Allowance, or MA, is a separate benefit. The MA day-count discussion here concerns the 39-week award; the separate 14-week award for helping a spouse’s business has different rules. Which maternity payment changes the answer?
The Department for Work and Pensions technical guide expressly distinguishes self-employment during an SMP payment period from work while receiving MA. For SMP, it says work in a self-employed capacity does not affect that payment. Under the standard MA keeping-in-touch arrangements, employment and self-employment both count towards the permitted workdays. This is why a recommendation to start a small business during maternity leave needs a payment check before an earnings calculation. Being paid per task does not itself establish your employment status.
| Your actual arrangement | Question to resolve before accepting work | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| SMP plus independent services | Is this genuinely self-employed work, and what does your existing contract require? | Payslip, service terms and any employer clarification |
| MA plus independent services | Which dates count, and how many workdays have you already used? | Award letter, workday log and reporting record |
| Work for the employer paying SMP | Are these agreed KIT days? | Employer agreement and dates used |
| Employment with another business | Did that employer employ you in the qualifying week? | Employment dates and payroll advice |
For a new employed job after the birth, the SMP technical guide has a separate rule involving whether that employer employed you in the qualifying week. Do not turn the independent-work exception into a general permission to take any second job. Describe the proposed relationship accurately when asking payroll or the benefits office. Explain who controls the work, what you supply and whether you would be on payroll. If the arrangement is unclear, settle that question before a shop sends stock to your home.
Why can a short packing session consume a whole MA day?
The DWP guide counts even a half-hour of KIT work as a whole day. The allowance is measured across the maternity allowance period, rather than refreshed every Monday. This makes small tasks scattered across the calendar quite different from the same tasks on fewer dates. Record the dates on which you actually perform services, including a separate parcel-point visit when relevant. Ask the paying office how it treats administration or an uncertain activity instead of assuming that only time spent closing a box matters.
If you exceed the permitted days, the technical guide says a decision maker determines further entitlement; you lose at least the days worked beyond the allowance. It is not a simple rule that only earnings above a small money threshold matter. The current MA change-reporting page explains how to contact the office by telephone or post. Give the work dates and retain your report. A later platform withdrawal does not rewrite the calendar on which you did the work.
What does the same batch of 24 parcels show?
Take an illustrative total of 24 small parcels at the AirPost suggested preparation fee of €2.25. The reference fee and formula were checked on 19 October 2026. That is €54.00 before the 3% withdrawal commission and €52.38 after it, before your costs and tax. This is a euro account illustration, not a sterling payout quote or a forecast of available orders. Use the actual currency and amount on your account when budgeting in pounds.
| Illustrative distribution of the same batch | Working dates | Reference preparation receipts after commission |
|---|---|---|
| 12 parcels on each of 2 dates | 2, if all related work occurs on those dates | €52.38 |
| 4 parcels on each of 6 dates | 6, subject to any work on other dates | €52.38 |
| 2 parcels on each of 12 dates | 12: already above a fresh 10-day MA allowance | €52.38 |
The difference is the calendar, not the fee. You cannot simply save orders for a fortnight to reduce working dates if the shop expects earlier dispatch. A suitable collaboration would need genuinely compatible dates agreed before orders arrive. Include receiving and checking the stock in that discussion. If the shop needs an ongoing daily service, that pattern may be unsuitable during MA even when the projected money looks small. A collaboration beginning after the allowance period may be easier to define honestly.
Does an AirPost profile create maternity-friendly employment?
AirPost connects an online shop with a person who stores its products, prepares orders and hands parcels to the selected carrier. The shop supplies stock and packaging under your agreement; the stock remains its property. You set a preparation fee and discuss the dispatch arrangement directly. The sender explanation describes this service. It does not turn an independent arrangement into a paid maternity job, create guaranteed demand or decide benefit entitlement on your behalf.
Your practical offer should name the dates you can genuinely cover, compatible parcel services and a manageable amount of stock. A printer and dry storage are part of the published setup. Consider whether carrier handover can happen on an already planned working date, rather than assuming a school run or collection solves it. The existing UK home-packing guide covers the broader arrangement. Here, the deciding issue is whether the complete service fits the specific maternity rules you are under.
What should you write down before the first order?
Create a small record containing payment name, relevant period, days already used, proposed tasks and the answer you receive about those tasks. For each working date, note the work done and any orders involved. Keep a copy of messages about the shop’s dispatch expectations. This is more useful than a screenshot showing only your eventual payout. It lets you distinguish a stock delivery from a day you checked stock, a label from a completed handover and a payment from the service it relates to.
Identify the payment
Use your current award or payroll document; check any enhanced employer maternity scheme separately.
Describe the whole service
Include receiving, messages, preparation and handover. Resolve uncertain activities with the relevant office.
Agree realistic dates
Tell the shop what you can cover before it relies on you. Keep evidence of any revised arrangement.
Reconcile work and money
Match your dated work log to fees and withdrawals without treating the withdrawal date as the work date.
Compulsory maternity leave is another check. GOV.UK states that an employee must take at least two weeks after the birth, or four for factory work. HMRC says KIT work for that employer cannot take place in that compulsory period. Separately, review any restrictions and notification terms in your employment contract. A favourable SMP rule does not answer every contractual question. Keep the conversation about your own role and dates, rather than relying on another parent’s arrangement with a different employer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start self-employed work while receiving SMP?
The DWP guide says work in a self-employed capacity does not affect SMP. Confirm that the proposed work really has that status and check your employment contract and any enhanced maternity-pay terms before agreeing services.
Are MA keeping-in-touch days renewed every month?
No. The standard allowance is for the maternity allowance period. Keep one running record covering that period, including working dates already used before a new collaboration.
Does half an hour of packing count as a full day?
Under the MA KIT guidance, even half an hour of work counts as a whole day. Count actual working dates rather than converting all minutes into a smaller number of full shifts.
Can I withdraw my money after maternity leave instead?
A later withdrawal does not change when the services were performed. Keep work dates and financial transactions separately, and report the work as required by the office administering your payment.
Should I accept daily dispatch while receiving MA?
First compare the required working dates with the days you have available under your claim. If the complete service does not fit, postpone the collaboration or agree a different arrangement before accepting orders.
