In short

  • Mercari Shipping Protection covers eligible prepaid-label shipments up to $200 per order, including bundles; First-Class Envelopes have a $20 cap. For parcels, carrier receipt within 3 calendar days is a condition, and a printed label or “I Shipped It” alone does not establish eligibility.
  • The current protection policy also requires possession evidence and says the seller must not file the carrier claim independently.
  • A stalled shipment and a delivered-but-missing order use different timing rules.
  • Keep the sold listing, package details, tracking and case correspondence together before requesting review.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

When a Mercari package goes missing or arrives damaged, the headline protection amount is only part of the decision. You need to identify the shipping arrangement, the tracking event and whether the transaction is still open. This guide covers Mercari US rules checked on October 14, 2026. It separates the conditions for protection from the practical evidence you can prepare, so you can respond to the actual problem instead of treating every buyer message as the same insurance claim.

What does the $200 headline cover, and what does it leave unresolved?

Mercari’s Shipping Protection policy covers qualifying loss or damage in transit with its prepaid labels. Its reimbursement limit applies to the order, including a bundle, rather than separately to every item in the box. It limits reimbursement to the sold value minus relevant return-shipping costs, subject to the cap. That makes the sold order and its contents list central documents when you ask for a review.

A cap is a maximum possible reimbursement, not an advance promise that every complaint produces that payment. Preserve the actual sale record and keep item costs separate from the protection calculation. The amount you paid to acquire stock, the listed asking price and the completed sale value are different numbers. Do not quote an asking price as the completed order’s value, or assume that several items in one bundle create several independent protection limits.

Mercari’s Seller Protection guidance distinguishes prepaid shipping from shipping on your own. Identify that choice before opening the case. A carrier policy attached to an independently purchased label needs its own terms and process. If you sold through different channels, the fact that another order used a Mercari label tells you nothing about the label on this shipment.

Which carrier events should you check before dispatch?

For the parcel route discussed here, the protection policy requires tracking showing carrier receipt within 3 calendar days of purchase. It also specifies an acceptance scan and a second possession or movement scan for possession evidence. Confirm the actual tracking rather than replacing it with a note that you placed a box somewhere. The policy has a separate First-Class Envelope exception; do not apply that exception to ordinary parcels.

Set your packing schedule from the purchase timestamp, not from the next time you happen to open the app. Check carrier access before offering a dispatch schedule you cannot meet. A parcel packed promptly but left without a recorded handoff can still create an evidence problem. If another person dispatches for you, agree how they report the handoff and how you will check the tracking record. The task needs a visible completion event.

Use the carrier named on the label. Mercari’s label and carrier guide explains carrier choices, tracking and prepaid-label conditions. Economy services can involve another carrier later in the journey, but that does not approve dropping the parcel with that downstream carrier yourself. Give the person doing the drop-off the actual carrier name and keep incompatible parcels out of the same handoff pile.

Keep internal task events and external carrier evidence in separate fields.

When is a slow parcel considered lost?

The Shipping Protection policy uses 30 or more days after the most recent tracking scan for its lost-in-transit criterion. That clock starts from the latest scan, not the label purchase and not the buyer’s first worried message. Preserve the tracking history and check for later movement. A newly recorded event can change which date you are assessing, even when the buyer has been waiting for the same order throughout.

Reply to the buyer with the observed status and the next action you can take. You do not need to invent a delivery promise or stop communicating until the loss criterion is met. Check whether the buyer has already opened a platform request, then keep your response within that case. Separate the buyer service decision from the protection review: refunding or replacing an item does not by itself prove that reimbursement will follow.

Do not open a separate carrier insurance claim while relying on Mercari Shipping Protection. The policy makes Mercari the carrier-claim party and excludes a seller who has filed independently. Keep one case reference and record who owns the next action. If you have already contacted a carrier, explain exactly what you requested when speaking to Mercari rather than guessing whether a tracking inquiry and a filed claim are the same event.

What changes when tracking says delivered but the buyer has nothing?

This is a different route from a parcel that has stopped moving. Mercari’s Refunds and Returns policy says the buyer must contact Mercari within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery for a delivered-but-not-received order. Mercari pauses the transaction and works to verify delivery. Ask the buyer to use the order’s platform process promptly; a private message alone does not replace that step.

The same policy explains that transactions complete when the buyer or Mercari rates them, with automatic rating normally occurring within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery. Check the transaction status when you receive the complaint. A case started before completion needs different handling from an informal message after rating. Keep the delivery timestamp and the platform request timestamp together, so you can describe the sequence accurately when support reviews it.

Avoid telling the buyer that the package is definitely at their door simply because tracking says delivered. Report the carrier event as an event, then let the platform’s verification process address the disputed delivery. Keep address records private and use the order tools for the conversation. Your useful contribution is the correct transaction, label and dispatch history, rather than speculation about a neighbor, a carrier mistake or the buyer’s motives.

What evidence should a damage report contain?

Document the sold item, its identifying details, the protection used and the package exterior. Ask the buyer to preserve useful packaging evidence while following Mercari’s instructions. The return policy can request photos of the label, outer packaging and packing materials, and gives a 24-hour response period for requested information. If a damaged parcel is rerouted back to you, the protection policy separately requires damage photos within 24 hours of its delivery.

Keep your initial dispatch record factual. Useful images show how the item was protected and which item went into the parcel; a photo of an anonymous closed box is less informative. For a bundle, retain the individual positions in the sold contents list. That lets you distinguish transit damage from an omitted component or an incorrect item. The return policy treats condition and listing discrepancies separately, so the evidence should address what actually happened.

  1. Open the matching order and record whether the transaction is rated, paused or awaiting action.
  2. Identify the purchased label and carrier, then preserve the relevant tracking events.
  3. Match the buyer’s report to the sold item or bundle contents and the packaging record.
  4. Use Mercari’s case process and collect the evidence it requests within the stated deadline.
  5. Record the decision, any return instructions and the financial outcome beside the original shipping expense.

How should protection affect a shop’s shipping budget?

Keep possible reimbursement outside your normal cost recovery until the platform actually approves it. Preparation, materials and your response work can still be expenses even when an item qualifies for a protection review. A shipment with stronger eligibility evidence is easier to explain, but it is not an excuse to remove costs from the ledger. Record the original expense and any later reimbursement as separate events.

For a separate domestic shop-planning comparison, the AirPost US-to-US options page displayed USPS Ground Advantage from approximately $7.78 on October 14, 2026. Two qualifying shipments at that reference would total $15.56, with the platform fee included and agreed sender payments and materials additional. This illustrates the expense of another dispatch; it is not a Mercari return-label quote or a promised protection payment.

AirPost’s seller explanation describes senders holding stock, packing and dropping off orders; its copy also states that stock held with a sender is not insured. Keep storage exposure separate from a carrier shipment’s protection. If you outsource preparation, agree the evidence handoff before sending stock. The related Mercari rate guide helps you check label selection, while an inventory ledger keeps order contents traceable.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mercari Shipping Protection cover a whole bundle?

The limit applies to the order, including its bundle, rather than separately to each item. Keep an itemized sold contents record and review the actual value and eligibility conditions.

Is pressing I Shipped It enough for a parcel claim?

No. Parcel eligibility depends on the required carrier tracking evidence. Mercari publishes a separate envelope exception, which should not be carried over to ordinary parcel shipments.

Should I file a USPS, UPS or FedEx claim myself?

When relying on Mercari Shipping Protection, the published policy reserves the carrier claim to Mercari. A seller-filed carrier claim can make the order ineligible for that protection route.

What if tracking says delivered but my buyer did not receive it?

Ask the buyer to use the platform’s delivered-but-not-received process promptly. That route uses the delivery timestamp and transaction status rather than the stalled-parcel loss clock.

Does ship-on-your-own receive Mercari protection?

Mercari distinguishes independently purchased shipping from its prepaid-label arrangement. Check the carrier or label provider’s own protection and claim terms for a ship-on-your-own order.
