In short

  • The UK PayPal Seller Protection page checked on 13 October 2026 lists delivery proof but no fixed signature-confirmation spending threshold. Check 3 things before releasing an order: the current account terms, the required destination evidence and the exact carrier service you are buying.
  • Royal Mail lists Tracked 24 and Tracked 24 with Signature separately. Tracking alone does not mean a signature option was purchased.
  • Royal Mail says a delivery signature can belong to the person who accepted the item, rather than the person named on the label. Match the record to the actual disputed handover.
  • For valuable contents, delivery proof and carrier compensation eligibility are separate checks; a signed service is not a promise that every type of item is covered.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You are about to release a valuable UK order and remember a rule about getting a signature above a certain price. Before applying it, identify which platform, account country and version of the terms it came from. An old search result or another marketplace policy can send you towards the wrong decision. This article is a pre-dispatch checklist for UK webshop sales paid through PayPal, focused on physical goods and retrievable delivery evidence. Sources were opened on 13 October 2026.

Does the current UK PayPal page require a signature above a fixed amount?

The current UK Seller Protection wording describes an online verifiable tracking number, delivery date, delivered status and matching recipient destination information. It does not list a fixed spending threshold for signature confirmation. That is what the page checked for this article says; it does not settle every individual claim or establish what an older transaction’s applicable terms said. If your case contains a specific document request, follow that request.

Do not turn the absence of a listed threshold into a reason to discard useful receipt evidence. Your shop can still choose a signature service as part of its fulfilment policy. The decision should be linked to the contents, destination, handover method and records available. Write those criteria down so a packer does not have to interpret payment terms while holding an already sealed parcel at the counter.

PayPal’s UK conditions also exclude item not received claims filed directly with the card issuer from Seller Protection. Identify whether a complaint is a PayPal claim or an issuer chargeback before promising protection. A signature can help document delivery, but it cannot remove a programme exclusion. Review the applicable channel and current requirements rather than treating signed delivery as a universal money-back safeguard for your business.

What is the difference between tracked and tracked with signature?

Royal Mail presents ordinary Tracked 24 and Tracked 24 with Signature as different product choices. The service name on the booking matters. A label carrying a barcode can belong to a tracked product without the extra signature requirement. Save the booking confirmation showing what was purchased. If your policy requires a signature, check that actual choice before someone hands the parcel to the carrier.

Post Office’s official Tracked 24 with Signature page describes proof of delivery, a delivery photograph and a signature from the person receiving the item. Those records have different jobs. A photograph helps show the delivery setting; the recorded signature concerns acceptance. Look at how you can retrieve both for your booking. Do not promise the same output from every account or broker simply because the carrier brand is Royal Mail.

For a service selected through AirPost, inspect the option actually offered for that parcel and route. The carrier’s public catalogue describes what the carrier sells through its own channels. It does not prove every listed feature is present in your intermediary booking. If the required receipt option is absent, obtain a compatible option rather than relabelling a standard tracked service in your customer message.

Must the signature belong to the person named on the label?

Royal Mail’s delivery guidance says the signature is supplied by the person accepting the delivery and is not always that of the person on the address label. You therefore need to read what the record actually documents. A different surname is a question to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud or an automatic failure. Compare the delivery location, recipient details and the customer’s specific account of the handover.

If your customer says the signature is unfamiliar, ask for a check with the people who may have accepted delivery at the agreed location. Request the relevant carrier record and retain the answer. Do not state that a signature proves the buyer personally opened the box. It concerns an acceptance event, and its significance depends on the delivery circumstances and the rules applying to the transaction.

Also separate ordinary signature capture from age checks, named-person services or identity verification. A service called with Signature should not be described to the customer as an identity-checked handover unless the actual booking includes that requirement. When your goods need a special receipt arrangement, inspect the appropriate carrier product rather than adding a note on the parcel and assuming the courier will enforce it.

Can a signed parcel still contain goods the service does not compensate?

Yes. Royal Mail’s Tracked 24 page states that compensation for valuables such as money and jewellery is not available on that service and directs users towards Special Delivery Guaranteed for valuable items. Check the eligibility rules for your actual contents and the service conditions before posting. A signature addresses receipt; a compensation clause addresses the carrier’s financial responsibility in specified circumstances. Neither substitutes for the other.

Review value evidence from your own invoices and check any prohibited or restricted contents rules. Describe the item specifically rather than calling everything a gift or accessory. Packaging, destination and the purchased product can affect what the carrier accepts. If the booking route does not support the required option, stop and choose another suitable route. Do not assume that adding a declared value upgrades the underlying product.

Keep this carrier assessment apart from PayPal eligibility. A service can provide useful delivery evidence while having limited compensation for the item. Conversely, a carrier loss claim does not by itself prove delivery to the buyer. Your fulfilment release needs to pass both checks, using the terms of the actual carrier booking and the payment transaction rather than one badge or product name.

How do you keep an address change from breaking the evidence chain?

Use one released version of the recipient address. Before packing, compare it with the payment transaction and order. If a customer sends a new destination after payment, hold the shipment while you resolve the change through the appropriate transaction process. Tell the local packer which instruction is paused. Otherwise one person may print the old label while another writes the new address on the box.

Preserve the original details and any change request instead of silently editing your history. If the carrier later records a redirection, retain that event too. A clear chronology shows whether the parcel followed the initially agreed route or a different one. It lets you ask PayPal a specific question about the transaction, rather than upload a final address that conceals how it changed.

For multi-parcel orders, repeat the booking check for every parcel. One signed handover does not cover another box sent using a different service. Record which items are in each shipment and why separate parcels were used. If only the valuable item requires your chosen receipt arrangement, make that allocation explicit so the packer applies the option to the correct box, not the first label printed.

What does the handling calculation tell you about the upgrade?

AirPost’s constants checked on 13 October 2026 give a recommended small-parcel packing fee of €2.25 plus €0.85 platform fee: €3.10 before transport, materials and goods. If a two-parcel order uses this recommended fee for each, these components total €6.20. A signature upgrade changes the transport booking; it does not automatically double these two handling components. Use the actual agreed packing fee in your final order budget.

The example is in euros because these are the platform constants, not a conversion of a UK carrier tariff. Add the actual signature-service quote in its quoted currency and keep any exchange calculation documented. Compare compatible services for the same weight, size, contents and destination. A cheaper option that lacks the evidence or contents eligibility you need is not an equivalent quote.

What should your packer confirm before releasing valuable stock?

For AirPost local fulfilment, agree a short release instruction: exact item, recipient address, chosen service and the reference to retain after handover. Your shop makes the payment and service decision. The packer checks that the labelled parcel matches that instruction and keeps the available drop-off record. Final receipt data must come from the carrier. Do not ask a home packer to certify something that happens later at the customer’s address.

Before releasing the first batch, check how you will retrieve a real service’s delivery evidence through your booking route. For the distinction between online and account tariffs, see Royal Mail business price guides. If your sales start through a social listing, the UK business shipping workflow for Facebook Marketplace explains order and payment handover. Use a current service instruction each time the booking changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does PayPal require signature confirmation in the UK?

The current UK Seller Protection page checked for this article lists delivery-proof requirements without a fixed signature spending threshold. Review the terms for your account and transaction and any specific request in an open case.

Is Royal Mail Tracked 24 automatically signed for?

Royal Mail lists ordinary Tracked 24 and Tracked 24 with Signature separately. Confirm the exact product on your booking instead of relying on the presence of a tracking barcode.

Does a signature prove the named buyer personally received the parcel?

Royal Mail says the person accepting delivery may sign instead of the person on the address label. Examine the actual recipient and location evidence in the circumstances of the complaint.

Does signing make jewellery eligible for Tracked 24 compensation?

A signature option and contents compensation are separate matters. Royal Mail excludes valuables such as jewellery from compensation on Tracked 24 and points users to Special Delivery Guaranteed.

Does a signature guarantee PayPal protection against a card chargeback?

No. The current UK programme excludes item not received claims filed directly with the card issuer. Evidence of receipt cannot by itself remove an exclusion from the payment programme.
