In short
- In Austria a pickup point is not cheaper: measured on 29 September 2026, Österreichische Post charged €7.91 for a parcel to a chosen post office and €7.91 to the door — the same for small, medium and 10–30 kg parcels.
- With no price gap, make home delivery your default and offer the post office as a free choice. A failed door delivery ends up at a post office or Abholstation anyway.
- The Post holds a parcel that could not be delivered for at least 14 calendar days. GLS keeps it up to eight working days in a PaketShop.
- The carrier choice matters more than the point: for a 10–30 kg parcel the Post charged €7.91, GLS €11.44 and UPS €40.49.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
Most advice about pickup points starts from the idea that the point is the cheap option and the door the premium one. In Austria that premise does not hold. On the national carrier the two cost exactly the same, so the question stops being about price and becomes one about your customer, your product and what happens when something goes wrong.
Is a pickup point cheaper than home delivery in Austria?
No. These are domestic prices from Austria to Austria, measured on our shipping options on 29 September 2026. They include our flat platform fee, which is the same on every line.
| Carrier | Service | Small (≤5 kg) | Medium (≤10 kg) | Large (10–30 kg) | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Österreichische Post | Pickup at chosen post office (Wunsch-Postfiliale) | €7.91 | €7.91 | €7.91 | Next day |
| Österreichische Post | Home delivery (Paket Österreich) | €7.91 | €7.91 | €7.91 | Next day |
| GLS | Home delivery | €8.48 | €9.61 | €11.44 | Next day |
| UPS | Home delivery (Standard) | €12.55 | €14.25 | €40.49 | Next day |
Two things follow from this table. The point-versus-door gap is zero, so every argument for the point that rests on price disappears. And one flat Post price from a small box up to 30 kg makes the Post the default carrier for almost everything; GLS only competes on the smallest parcels, and UPS at €40.49 for a large parcel is a service you choose for a reason, not by default.
Austria is not a cheap parcel country. The cheapest carrier rate for 2 kg, without our fee, was €6.30 on the index of 26 September 2026, and €7.06 at 5 and 10 kg, against a European domestic median of €4.04 for 2 kg. The full comparison is in the European shipping rates index.
Where do Austrian customers collect parcels?
The Austrian pickup network is essentially the Post’s. According to Österreichische Post there are around 1,700 Post-Geschäftsstellen across the country, and more than 1,300 Post Partners — shops that run a post counter next to their own business. On top of those come self-service stations where parcels can be collected around the clock.
| Where | What it is | Opening hours | How the parcel gets there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post-Geschäftsstelle | Post office, own branch or Post Partner shop | Branch or shop hours | Wunsch-Postfiliale at checkout, or deposited after a failed attempt |
| Post Abholstation / Poststation | Self-service parcel locker | Around the clock | Deposited there after a failed attempt |
| Post Empfangsbox | Parcel box at the customer’s own building | Around the clock | Courier places the parcel and notifies the customer |
| GLS PaketShop | Shop counter in the GLS network | Shop hours | After a failed attempt when no neighbour takes it |
The Wunsch-Postfiliale service is the one you book: the customer names a post office at checkout and the parcel goes there instead of to the door. Everything else in the table is a fallback that kicks in on its own when a door delivery fails.
What do Austrian customers expect?
Home delivery, much like in Germany. The Post’s flagship parcel is a door product, and its network of Abholstationen and Empfangsboxen is built around catching parcels the door missed. A customer who picks a post office at checkout is choosing convenience, not a discount — there is no discount to choose.
That makes Austria the clearest case in our Europe-wide comparison: the only carrier pair in that comparison with no gap between point and door. The rest of selling there without a warehouse is in the Austria market guide.
What does a failed delivery cost you in Austria?
The Austrian system is forgiving. When the Post cannot hand over a parcel in person, it deposits it at a post office, Poststation or Empfangsbox and holds it for at least 14 calendar days. The Post notes one exception: mail-order senders can set a shorter holding period of five working days. GLS first tries a neighbour, against a signature; if that fails, the parcel goes to a nearby PaketShop, where it can be collected from the next day for up to eight working days, or three at a GLS PaketBox.
- Door fails, parcel is deposited: no extra cost to you. The customer collects a day later, often at a 24-hour station.
- Parcel is never collected: after the holding period it goes back to the sender. With local stock, that is your sender in Austria; to still deliver the order you pay a new label and a new sender fee.
- Customer chose a post office and never went: same outcome, same cost — and with the point, you gained nothing on price to offset it.
In numbers: resending a small parcel with the Post costs €7.91 for the label plus the sender fee — €2.25 with our suggested fee for a small parcel — so €10.16 per uncollected parcel. In most countries you weigh that against what the point saves you. In Austria the point saves €0.00, so every uncollected point parcel is a pure loss.
The Austrian twist
Because the Post holds deposited parcels for at least 14 days, a door delivery that fails usually still reaches the customer. The pickup point adds no safety that the door does not already give you.
Which default should an online shop choose for Austria?
- Home delivery with Österreichische Post as the default, for every size up to 30 kg. It matches what customers expect, and the price is the same as the point.
- The chosen post office as a free option at checkout, for customers who are never home during the day. Same price, so do not charge extra for it.
- GLS for small parcels only if a customer or product needs it; at €8.48 it is close to the Post, but it is more expensive in every size.
- Check what you sell by weight: at €7.91 for 10–30 kg, heavy products are unusually cheap to ship domestically in Austria.
- A pickup point as default to save money. There is nothing to save.
- UPS as the default for large parcels. At €40.49 against €7.91 it costs five times as much.
Our recommendation: door by default, post office as a free choice, the Post as carrier. It is the simplest setup in any country we measured, and the one with the fewest ways to go wrong.
How this works with a sender in Austria
With local fulfilment through AirPost, a verified person in Austria holds a batch of your stock and ships each order as a domestic Austrian parcel — next day, at domestic prices, instead of a cross-border parcel from your own country. You pay the label, the fee you agree with your sender, and our €0.85 platform fee per parcel. No subscription, no storage costs.
Find a sender in Austria
On /en/senders, filter by country and parcel size. Every sender is identity-checked, and reviews from other shops show who ships reliably.
Send a test batch
One box of a best seller in your own packaging. The stock stays yours; if the match does not work, you ask for it back.
Choose home or post office per product
Under each product you set the service for Austria. For most shops that is Post home delivery; add the post office for customers who choose it.
Let orders run
Create an order in the chat, or connect Shopify through the Airpost Order Link app so paid orders reach your sender automatically. The sender sees the full address only after claiming the order.
Customer returns follow their own flow: the customer reports the return with photos, you approve it, and the parcel goes back to your sender — see returns without a warehouse. If a parcel goes missing instead, read what to do when a parcel is lost or damaged.
