Pirate Ship vs Shippo: own carrier rates or a simple label tool?

Compare Pirate Ship and Shippo for US sellers using carrier contracts, custom order systems and live rate tests. Separate label software from packing costs.

In short

  • Choose Pirate Ship when its USPS and UPS label workflow covers your US orders and you want $0 in monthly software charges. Shortlist Shippo when you need documented support for your own carrier accounts or a custom label API; its Starter app permits up to 30 labels a month and charges 5 cents per own-account label.
  • A carrier contract, a platform subscription and the postage purchase are separate costs. Identify which account produced each rate before comparing totals.
  • Shippo test mode uses sample labels and may show mock prices. It cannot establish which platform gives your store the lower live rate.
  • Buying a label leaves someone responsible for stock, packaging and carrier handover. Price that work separately when deciding whether to outsource it.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You already have a UPS or FedEx relationship, or your store has an order system that does not fit a standard connector. That changes the Pirate Ship versus Shippo decision. The useful question is whether you can keep your rate agreement and produce the right shipment record without repeated manual entry. A lower advertised discount does not answer either part. This comparison concerns US-origin store orders, with documentation and the AirPost route page checked on October 14, 2026.

Whose carrier account will actually buy my label?

Start with the account behind the quotation. A platform-provided carrier rate is one option. A rate obtained through your own connected carrier contract is another. Your store might have a favorable discount on a particular service, but that rate only helps if the software can request it for the correct account. Ask for the account identifier and billing route in the demonstration, rather than accepting a carrier logo as proof that your contract is connected.

The Shippo pricing page explicitly allows supported own-carrier connections. It lists a $0.05 charge per own-account label on Starter, waived on Pro and Premier. Pirate Ship describes access to its offered USPS and UPS prices. If retaining an existing contract is mandatory, Shippo has the documented connection to investigate. Obtain confirmation for your specific carrier and account; a generic statement about connecting accounts does not settle service availability or your negotiated surcharge terms.

These are starting points for testing, rather than a ranking of postage prices. Account eligibility must match the actual US shipment.

Keep a copy of your carrier agreement available during the trial. Check whether the price includes the accessorial charges relevant to your destinations and whether billing goes through the platform or directly to the carrier. The person who can challenge a correction may depend on that relationship. A spreadsheet showing only the initial label amount hides this distinction and can make a contract look less expensive than it eventually proves.

Can my own order system connect without a supported store app?

Pirate Ship’s API answer says it does not offer an API. It points users to its existing integrations and spreadsheet upload instead. That makes the integration requirement a practical filter: if your system must purchase labels through a programmable interface, first investigate Shippo. If exporting orders and importing tracking is acceptable, a spreadsheet workflow may meet the need without maintaining a custom label connection.

Describe the event that creates the shipment. Is it payment, completion of a made-to-order item, or a packer approving the finished box? Buying automatically on payment can produce the wrong label when the final package is still unknown. Define how an address correction, cancellation or failed purchase reaches the person preparing the order. The integration should preserve the order reference and show whether a label already exists before another attempt is made.

For a custom Shippo implementation, evaluate API pricing separately from the web-app plan. Shippo’s pricing documentation distinguishes API activity not associated with Shippo labels, such as separate rating, tracking and address validation. Ask which requests your system actually makes. A connection that repeatedly requests rates while a packer changes dimensions may have a different usage pattern from a browser operator buying the final label once. Scope the bill to the implementation you intend to run.

Will a spreadsheet preserve each package’s dimensions?

Pirate Ship’s spreadsheet instructions accept CSV, ODS, XLS and XLSX. They require a header row and separate address fields, with mapping during upload. The same guide supports length, width, height and weight columns that override the batch default. That is useful for a seller whose orders leave in different boxes: a shared batch does not have to mean a shared physical package specification.

Build the export from packed dimensions, rather than product dimensions. Include the shipping address exactly as approved, an unambiguous order reference and the unit used for weight. Retain leading zeros in ZIP codes and product identifiers. During the trial, inspect the imported record for a normal box and the most awkward package you actually sell. A clean upload status tells you that the file parsed; it does not prove that every field landed in the intended place.

Then test the return journey of the data. The shipping record needs to reach the correct storefront order without marking an unshipped item complete. Save the tracking export and compare it with the order list before posting updates. If an operator must manually reconcile every row, count that work when assessing the software. A zero-dollar subscription can still be a sensible choice, but the decision should include the real handling of your store’s exceptions.

How do I compare rates without buying duplicate labels?

Quote the same finished package in both tools before purchasing. Keep origin ZIP, destination ZIP, ship date, residential status, service, weight, dimensions and extra services constant. Record whether Shippo used its offered rates or your account. Do not compare a Ground Advantage quote with an expedited service because both screens recommend one. Choose the service that meets the customer’s delivery agreement, then compare equivalent eligible quotations.

Use Shippo test mode for process practice. Its documentation says test labels are not charged and may use mock rates; a test label for an imported order does not mark it fulfilled in the store. This gives you a safe way to inspect fields and print layout. Switch to a live quotation to assess postage, and buy only the label you intend to attach to the shipment.

A test should end with a reconciled order, rather than a folder of PDFs. Confirm the chosen label’s tracking number, the ship-from address and the carrier account used. Record any optional coverage separately. Keep the unused quote as comparison evidence without treating it as a completed shipment. This sequence avoids making refund timing or duplicate tracking part of an experiment that was intended to compare software.

What changes if someone else packs the order?

At that point you are comparing a labor arrangement as well as label software. AirPost’s published copy describes a sender holding an agreed stock batch, packing orders and dropping them with the carrier. Discuss the actual US sender’s capacity and package instructions before placing stock. The copy says stock at a sender is not insured. Keep the initial batch manageable and agree how you will reconcile what was received, dispatched and returned.

On October 14, 2026, the AirPost US-to-US page displayed small-package starting references of approximately $7.78 for USPS Ground Advantage and $8.22 for FedEx Ground Economy. The displayed difference is $8.22 − $7.78 = $0.44. Both figures already include AirPost’s platform fee; the agreed sender compensation and materials still need to be added. These country-level starting references are not quotations from Pirate Ship or Shippo.

Use that calculation to separate the two decisions. The carrier-reference difference concerns transport; the sender agreement concerns who does the packing. Obtain an address-specific quote with the final package details, and do not add the platform fee twice. The dollar amounts are approximate display conversions, while the page says payment is in euros. No native Pirate Ship or Shippo connection is established by this comparison. The US Shopify fulfillment comparison helps assess the separate stock-location decision.

What should I require before switching my store?

  1. Identify the carrier account and invoice recipient for every service you intend to use.
  2. Import a real package specification and inspect the address, units and dimensions before purchasing.
  3. Practice cancellation and error handling with sample labels, then compare equivalent live quotes.
  4. Buy the intended label once and verify that tracking attaches to the correct customer order.
  5. Approve the software only after the packer can follow the ordinary order and the exception process without guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pirate Ship cheaper than Shippo?

Pirate Ship has no monthly software fee. The cheaper total depends on equivalent live carrier quotes, any Shippo plan or own-account charge, and the work your order process requires.

Can Shippo use my own carrier account?

Shippo documents supported own-account connections. Its Starter app charges 5 cents per label bought through your own account. Confirm that your carrier and contract services are supported.

Does Pirate Ship have an API?

No. Its support documentation directs sellers to available store integrations and spreadsheet uploads instead.

Are Shippo test-mode rates real shipping prices?

Some are mock prices. Use test mode to inspect the process and live mode to compare the actual eligible rate before buying postage.

Can Pirate Ship import different package dimensions in a CSV?

Yes. Its spreadsheet guide documents mapped length, width, height and weight fields that can override a batch default.
