Best fulfillment for Shopify: US order-routing choices

Compare Amazon MCF, ShipBob and AirPost for US Shopify orders by integration eligibility, bundles, packaging and stock risk before requesting quotes.

In short

  • For US Shopify orders, compare 3 distinct setups: Amazon MCF if its US app and inventory arrangement fit, ShipBob when mapped bundles and multi-channel products need warehouse execution, or AirPost for a directly agreed small stock batch with a suitable sender. There is no universal cheapest winner without equivalent receiving, storage, preparation, transport and returns quotes.
  • Shopify’s documented Amazon MCF and Buy with Prime app requires US fulfillment, US customer addresses and an Amazon Seller Central account. Selling on Amazon or using Buy with Prime is not required for MCF orders.
  • ShipBob distinguishes a bundle containing multiple inventory items from several channel products representing one physical item. Test which structure your catalogue needs.
  • AirPost stock held with a sender is not insured. Start with a batch whose value and recovery you can manage, and verify the sender’s capacity before moving it.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A fulfillment app connects an order to a physical place. Choosing the app without choosing that place leaves receiving, packing and replenishment unresolved. This guide considers a Shopify shop selling to US customers and compares documented workflows checked on 10 October 2026. AirPost is one of the options and publishes this comparison; the recommendations are conditional, and provider delivery performance has not been independently benchmarked here. Ask each candidate to demonstrate your real catalogue before moving stock.

A store selling one standard product has a different problem from a store selling kits, fragile sets or personalised inserts. Write down which products the provider must receive, whether they arrive already assembled and what should happen when one component runs out. Include the final customer country and the physical dispatch origin. The provider’s integration name alone does not establish that it accepts those products, locations or packing instructions.

Can I use Amazon fulfillment without selling on Amazon?

Yes. Shopify’s Amazon MCF guide says you do not need to sell on Amazon to use its documented app, and you do not need Buy with Prime to fulfill through MCF. The same guide sets narrower requirements for this connector: orders fulfilled in the US, delivery to US addresses and a Seller Central account. Do not confuse the general availability of MCF with the eligibility of a specific Shopify integration.

Shopify also says products not assigned to a fulfillment-service location are assigned to the store’s default location. Inspect each variant after connecting the app. An installed connector is not proof that the intended orders will route to it. Place a supported test order with one Amazon-held product and one product held elsewhere, then inspect the assignment. Decide what the customer will see if the basket produces separate shipments. A mixed basket needs an explicit policy before it becomes routine.

Will Amazon MCF use my own branded packaging?

Amazon’s current MCF FAQ describes unbranded packaging as the default, with exceptions where that would extend shipping or delivery time. It describes an option to require blank boxes and states that the unbranded feature does not support items longer than 56 inches or heavier than 49.9 lb. These limits belong to that packaging feature, not a blanket acceptance rule for every MCF shipment.

Blank packaging and your custom packaging are different requirements. If an insert, tissue arrangement or printed box is part of the product experience, obtain a specific answer about that work before choosing. Do not describe an unbranded box as a promise of your bespoke presentation. For a marketplace that restricts the final delivery operator, Amazon’s FAQ also discusses blocking Amazon Logistics; confirm how the chosen integration exposes that setting rather than assuming the default meets every sales-channel rule.

How does ShipBob treat bundles and multi-channel products?

ShipBob’s operational definitions describe a bundle as one product resolving to multiple inventory items. A merge is different: products from different channels resolve to one inventory item. The same documentation defines a return as a process that can restock, dispose of or quarantine returned inventory. These distinctions help you ask precise questions when one physical product has several storefront identities or a sold kit contains several components.

For example, a pair sold together needs its component quantities identified, while the same single product sold through Shopify and another channel needs its identities linked. Do not send a stock file that uses one reference for both meanings. Ask ShipBob to show the outbound pick result and a partial return for your specific setup. The documentation establishes the concepts; it does not establish that every integration version or commercial quote includes every assembly and inspection task you may want.

When is a peer-to-peer stock batch worth considering?

AirPost’s model is to send your products to a sender who stores the agreed batch, packs orders and hands parcels over. There is no order minimum or subscription in the published shop copy, and the stock remains yours. That makes a limited batch worth investigating when you need a clearly defined packing arrangement rather than a broad warehouse operation. It still requires a suitable person, enough handling capacity and products they can safely receive and prepare.

The material limitation is stock risk. AirPost’s copy says stock at a sender is not insured and recommends a test batch. Ask for an identity check before sending stock and agree quantities, condition on arrival, access to materials and how stock is returned. A verified identity does not prove that the location suits your products. For valuable, regulated or specialist goods, a warehouse with the appropriate handling and contractual protection may be a better match.

Airpost Order Link is listed in the Shopify App Store. Confirm installation and routing for your intended US workflow before relying on it. The Shopify app guide explains the published process; AirPost for shops describes the physical stock arrangement. Keep the two decisions connected.

How do I compare fulfillment costs fairly?

Give every candidate the same order mix and product handling requirements. Ask separately about stock receiving, ongoing storage, order preparation, extra components, custom materials, shipping, returns and stock removal. Record any minimum invoice or setup charge only when it appears in the provider’s actual terms. This guide leaves competitor amounts unquoted because a general label price and a complete warehouse quote would not be equivalent inputs.

For an AirPost illustration, its US → US route page fetched on 10 October 2026 displayed small-format USPS Ground Advantage from approximately $7.78, or €6.94 in euros. If a real parcel quote confirms that amount and you agree the recommended small-parcel preparation rate of €2.25, the subtotal is €9.19 per order. Fifteen identical qualifying orders would total €137.85 before materials and replenishment.

The label reference already contains the €0.85 platform fee. The preparation rate is a recommendation, not a binding agreement with a sender. The US page is a country-level starting illustration, so obtain a quote using the actual ZIP codes, weight and dimensions. Neither this calculation nor the starting dollar display determines what Amazon or ShipBob would charge, or proves that AirPost is cheaper for your basket.

How should I test order routing before moving all my stock?

  1. Map one ordinary product

Confirm its physical stock, fulfillment location and storefront identity. Place a supported test order and inspect which provider receives it.

  2. Add one difficult basket

Use a bundle or mixed-location basket from your real catalogue. Confirm component picking, parcel count and the customer’s dispatch notification.

  3. Cancel before dispatch

Check when the provider stops work and how the reserved stock becomes usable again. Retain the confirmation rather than relying on one changed storefront status.

  4. Process a return and stock removal

Demonstrate the receiving decision, restocking or inspection hold, and the process for getting unsold stock back. Include those quoted costs in the comparison.

The Shopify inventory comparison helps evaluate the quantities behind those routing choices. Approve the trial only when the order history, provider confirmation and physical result agree. A successful ordinary order is useful, but the cancellation and return often reveal whether the arrangement remains workable when something changes. Those results make a quote meaningful: you know which work it must cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fulfillment for Shopify in the US?

MCF, ShipBob and AirPost fit different stock and handling arrangements. Compare eligibility, catalogue mapping, packing requirements, stock risk and equivalent costs. Choose the provider that completes your trial cases with clear responsibilities.

Do I need Buy with Prime to use Amazon MCF?

No. Shopify’s documented app supports both, but MCF fulfillment does not require Buy with Prime. That app still has its own US-origin, US-address and account requirements.

Does unbranded packaging mean custom branded packaging?

No. Amazon’s documented blank-packaging feature removes Amazon branding under its stated conditions. A shop’s bespoke box or insert requirement needs a separate confirmed arrangement.

Can I send Shopify bundles to a warehouse?

Ask the provider to map your sold bundle to its physical components and demonstrate picking and a partial return. ShipBob documents a bundle structure, but your integration and handling quote still need confirmation.

Is stock at an AirPost sender insured?

No. The published shop copy says it is not insured. Start with a manageable test batch, verify the person and location, and consider another arrangement if that exposure is unsuitable.
