Sending nail polish in the UK: the four-bottle shop check

Check four bottles and 30 ml per item before posting nail polish orders. Separate remover, protect glass and distinguish UK counter rules from export accounts.

In short

  • Under the standard Royal Mail route described by Post Office, a UK parcel may contain up to 4 nail-varnish, polish or gel items, each no larger than 30 ml, subject to packing and posting conditions. Four bottles totalling 120 ml is the largest possible total at those individual limits, not a pooled allowance for any bottle size.
  • The published category includes solvent-based and water-based products. A water-based description does not remove the category’s posting restrictions.
  • Remover has a separate entry in the prohibited flammable-liquids list; do not treat a manicure kit as one approved polish item.
  • Standard international mail excludes this category, while a named business-account exception exists for Germany under specific service conditions.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A nail shop can turn a compliant order into a different dispatch problem with one extra bottle. A top coat, a promotional miniature and the colours inside a gift set all affect the physical contents. The useful question is not whether the order looks small on the screen. It is whether every bottle, the final count and the chosen carrier process pass their checks. Keep the transport decision connected to your actual basket so the packer does not have to interpret the sales offer.

Can you pool unused millilitres between bottles?

The Post Office list gives two separate conditions: no more than four items in a parcel and no more than thirty millilitres per item. You need to satisfy both. A larger bottle does not qualify because the other bottles are smaller. Nor do several tiny bottles become one item because their combined volume is low. Work from the product quantities as sold and the count that will actually be placed in the carton.

These are conditional arithmetic examples. They do not replace product assessment or the service’s full restrictions.

Make the same count visible on the preparation sheet. Your checkout might show a kit as a single line, while the packer sees four separate bottles. The dispatch decision should use the bottle count. If you revise the kit contents, revise its transport information too. For a product offered in several sizes, keep a separate reference for the size that can use this route. A generic product name is a weak control when similar bottles sit next to one another.

Does water-based gel belong to a different posting category?

The public nail-varnish, polish and gel entry explicitly covers solvent-based and water-based products. For that standard route, a water-based label is therefore not a reason to ignore the category. Your supplier’s transport classification remains relevant, particularly if you are considering a different carrier or a specialist business arrangement. Keep the distinction clear: product information helps identify the goods, while the chosen carrier can still impose its own category conditions.

Do not relabel a gel as an ordinary cosmetic merely to use a faster dispatch method. Give the carrier the exact item description and relevant technical information. If a product is sold with a lamp or electrical accessory, evaluate the actual combined contents separately. This article does not establish a rule for those additional items. The presence of an accessory should trigger the appropriate extra check rather than disappearing beneath the shop category manicure kit.

Can remover travel with an otherwise acceptable colour set?

The standard list names acetone and all nail-varnish removers in its flammable-liquids entry, which is excluded from UK and international mail on that route. The permission for nail polish is not permission for every nail-care liquid. Check a starter kit component by component. An added remover bottle needs its own accepted transport solution; it cannot simply use one of the four spaces in the polish allowance. Price and free-gift status do not change this content check.

For your sales offer, decide whether the kit can be fulfilled as advertised before it goes on sale. You could offer an accessory-only kit, a polish set under a confirmed process or another carrier-confirmed combination. Do not send a reduced kit without telling the customer. Describe what you can deliver and get agreement to any change. A packing instruction saying omit restricted items does not by itself resolve a paid order for a complete set.

How should you protect glass bottles and hand over the parcel?

Post Office requires strong outer packaging with the bottles secured or cushioned so they cannot break, be punctured or leak into it. Build your packing instruction around the real bottle and closure. A carton intended for long narrow bottles might leave smaller bottles loose. Check the completed combination, including any presentation tray. Explain to the packer what to inspect when a cap is damaged, a bottle is cracked or the product has already escaped its container.

For the described standard route, an ID8000 label is required, the sender’s name and return address must be visible, and the items must be presented at a Post Office counter. Keep that handover method in the instruction with the contents check. A prepaid label does not demonstrate that a collection, locker or ordinary unattended drop-off is acceptable. If your shop uses a different confirmed business arrangement, document its particular handover rather than silently borrowing the counter procedure.

What happens if a customer orders more than four bottles?

Do not release the whole basket as one standard-route parcel. Reassess the fulfilment choice: separate fully compliant parcels, a different confirmed contract service, a revised order or cancellation where appropriate. Each resulting parcel needs its own content, packing and service checks. The answer is not simply buy another barcode. You also need to communicate the delivery arrangement and use actual costs when setting the customer’s charge.

A practical basket review should catch additions after the initial sale as well. A customer might ask for another shade in a message; a staff member may add a sample during preparation. Recount before closing the box. Tie the final dispatch record to the actual contents, including gifts. This is a suggested shop procedure, not an extra carrier rule. It gives the packer a clear decision at the moment when the physical parcel is formed.

Is international nail-polish postage always impossible?

The ordinary Post Office entry excludes the category from international mail. Royal Mail’s official Germany country guide, however, identifies a specific exception: business-account customers can send the listed dangerous cosmetic goods using International Business Tracked with Signature, under the stated conditions. That is a named contract and destination exception. It is not permission for a standard personal international label, every export country or every quantity.

If Germany is part of your sales market, contact your Royal Mail account manager with the exact product and intended order composition. Ask for the currently applicable service, account approval, packing, declarations and quantity conditions. Keep that confirmed export instruction separate from the domestic counter sheet. A commercial customer number alone does not establish that your particular references are covered. Do not extrapolate the German country page to a French or Australian order.

The separate Click & Drop OBA dangerous-goods guide also states that only one type of dangerous good can be sent per shipment in its described process. This matters when your range includes polish and other regulated cosmetics. That domestic workflow does not itself prove eligibility for the Germany exception. Use the specific agreement for the specific route; overlapping carrier branding does not merge the conditions.

How do you budget for separate ordinary nail accessories?

AirPost excludes dangerous goods. For an independently suitable non-dangerous accessory order, use the relevant agreed packing payment instead. With the recommended small-parcel amount, the constants read on 14 October 2026 give €2.25 + €0.85 = €3.10 for packing and platform, before postage and materials. If a suitable accessory order requires the regular parcel category, the same two components are €3.85. This compares categories, not measured order volumes or a nail-polish tariff.

The figures are denominated in euros, with no assumed conversion to pounds, and use the constant snapshot alongside the AirPost pricing model, retrieved on 14 October 2026. Through local fulfilment for shops, consider only the separately eligible ordinary articles. Your polish transport arrangement needs its own real price. Keep the two cost records separate so a low ordinary packing payment cannot be mistaken for the total cost of shipping a regulated cosmetic order.

For the physical design of an ordinary accessory set, the existing guide to testing subscription-box packaging shows why each edition needs its own contents and size check. Apply that preparation discipline to your ordinary range while keeping polish under its confirmed route. It can also help prevent a promotional bottle being added to a previously approved accessory-only parcel. The packing team should know which contents list governs each order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post five small nail-polish bottles in the UK?

The published standard allowance permits no more than four items per parcel. Five small bottles exceed that count even if their combined volume is below 120 ml.

Can one bottle use the unused allowance from the others?

No. Each item must be no larger than 30 ml. The per-item limit and four-item count are separate checks.

Do the restrictions apply to water-based nail polish?

The standard Post Office entry explicitly includes solvent-based and water-based polish or gel. Do not remove the category conditions because the product is described as water-based.

Can I send nail polish internationally to Germany?

Standard international mail excludes it. Royal Mail names a business-account exception using International Business Tracked with Signature for Germany; obtain confirmation of the applicable account and product conditions.

Can a remover bottle count as one of the four items?

The polish allowance does not cover remover. The standard list names nail-varnish removers in its prohibited flammable-liquids category.

Can I use AirPost for the polish portion of my shop?

AirPost excludes dangerous goods. The cost comparison concerns separately suitable ordinary accessories, not the regulated polish products.
