In short
- Your shop can ship qualifying alcohol-based perfume domestically with USPS Ground Advantage using surface transportation; USPS’s perfume FAQ limits the total to 16 fluid ounces per mailpiece. Air shipment needs prior written USPS authorization, and international and APO/FPO/DPO perfume mailings are prohibited.
- A paid ground label does not complete the job: you need the correct product classification, leak containment, a strong outer package and the current Limited Quantity surface mark.
- Count samples and gifts alongside the purchased bottles. A small free vial still belongs in the package’s contents and volume calculation.
- AirPost excludes dangerous goods from stock sent to its home senders. Carrier permission for perfume does not make that stock eligible for AirPost.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A fragrance shop needs a shipping rule that survives a changed basket. Your customer might buy a bottle, add a travel spray and receive a sample. The packing person sees three containers while your checkout sees one main product. Build the dispatch decision around the complete contents. This guide addresses commercial orders leaving a US location for US customers, using official rules checked on October 14, 2026. It distinguishes ordinary surface perfume mailing from the separate approval process for air service.
Does a Ground Advantage label make my perfume order acceptable?
Start with the finished product’s transport information, then the service. The USPS perfume FAQ describes domestic surface mailing and a total volume ceiling of 16 ounces. Treat that as fluid volume, not the shipping weight on your scale. A glass bottle, box and cushioning can weigh much more than the liquid they contain. You must satisfy both the contents restrictions and the postage requirements.
Ask your supplier for the safety data sheet or transport classification for the exact fragrance and concentration you sell. Record the product reference, bottle capacity, flashpoint and relevant transport classification. A different scent or reformulated product needs its own check. Do not infer that an oil-based or alcohol-free fragrance is unrestricted: the finished mixture could have another hazardous characteristic. Missing information means the SKU stays out of the approved dispatch list until you resolve it.
| Order or request | Decision before packing | What to keep with the order |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol-based perfume for a domestic surface route | Confirm mailability, total volume and Ground Advantage preparation | Product classification and approved pack specification |
| Perfume plus travel sprays or samples | Add every container to the contents calculation | Actual basket and aggregate liquid volume |
| Priority Mail requested at checkout | Use only if the exact mailing is covered by written air authorization | Applicable authorization and its preparation conditions |
| International or APO/FPO/DPO destination | Do not offer USPS perfume fulfillment | Customer notification and an alternative confirmed arrangement |
| Stock intended for an AirPost home sender | Exclude dangerous fragrance stock | Separate eligible accessories from restricted products |
What changes when I add perfume samples to the box?
Samples are product, even when the invoice prices them at zero. List bottle and vial volumes in one unit and total the actual packed contents. For a deliberately hypothetical contents check, two 3.4-fluid-ounce bottles and four 0.1-fluid-ounce samples contain 7.2 fluid ounces. That arithmetic is below the FAQ ceiling, but it does not establish that the formula, closures or packaging qualify. Keep the example as a volume calculation, never as a blanket approval for a discovery set.
Separate the sample selection from the decision to release the parcel. A packing instruction saying “include a free fragrance” leaves the person at the bench to choose an unreviewed formula. Name approved sample references and their capacities. If the selected gift changes, recalculate the contents and verify its classification. Use the same control for influencer kits and replacements: calling a shipment promotional does not remove the restrictions on the liquid inside.
How should I contain a broken or leaking bottle?
USPS Packaging Instruction 3A requires secure closures, cushioning that can prevent breakage and absorb leakage, sealed secondary packaging and strong outer packaging for the liquids it covers. A decorative retail carton does not prove those requirements are met. Keep protection around the glass separate from absorbency: an air cushion may protect against impact without being able to absorb the contents of a broken bottle.
Inspect the bottle and closure
Use the reviewed bottle presentation. Stop for cracked glass, a loose closure, residue or a missing protective component. Do not improvise a replacement sprayer at dispatch.
Build the containment layer
Use the specified cushioning and absorbent material with securely sealed secondary packaging. Match the material and quantity to the approved contents, including samples.
Secure the outer carton
Prevent bottles from contacting each other or shifting into the carton walls. Close the strong outer package using the documented method and check the final weight.
Match the label to the contents
Declare the actual hazardous contents through a supported mailing process. Apply the required surface marking and retain the shipment record before handover.
Make the specification reproducible: identify the bottle arrangement, secondary package, absorbent material and outer carton. A photo of one finished box is useful alongside the written instructions. If a seasonal gift carton changes the geometry, review that arrangement before it enters regular use. Treat a successful pack trial as evidence about your chosen packaging, not proof that a carrier will accept a different formula or that every journey will produce the same result.
Which marking belongs on the surface parcel?
Publication 52 section 343.3 specifies the DOT Limited Quantity surface marking. Its normal minimum side dimension is 100 mm; a smaller package can use the permitted reduced mark, no smaller than 50 mm per side. Plan a carton face that accommodates the applicable mark clearly. Keep it separate from tape, folds and the shipping label. A generic fragile sticker does not convey the transport classification.
Do not copy markings from an old packing tutorial without checking them against the current instruction. The outer carton is the carrier’s view of the shipment; your internal stock description cannot replace its markings or the required electronic declaration. If you reuse a carton, remove obsolete labels that could conflict with the new contents. Give the dispatcher the actual contents record so they can answer the acceptance questions accurately, rather than guessing from a sealed gift box.
Can I offer Priority Mail after getting permission for air?
USPS has a specific authorization process for ethanol-based flammable products in section 343.25. Initial approval lasts one year and specifies the products and preparation conditions. Your shop must obtain the written authorization before using the permitted air service. A supplier’s approval, another seller’s experience or an online label purchase is not your authorization. Review its scope whenever you change the formula, container or dispatch operation.
The return journey needs its own instructions. USPS’s approved-air provisions require a notice explaining that consumers may re-mail the products only by surface transportation. Do not put an ordinary air return label in every order merely because your outbound business mailing has approval. Keep your return email tied to the product and its condition. A leaking bottle should trigger a review with your qualified carrier contact, not an instruction to put it into the original carton and send it back.
Is UPS Ground an alternative for my fragrance catalog?
Potentially, after classification and route checks. UPS’s hazardous-materials guide says qualifying Limited Quantity ground shipments in the 48 contiguous states do not need shipping papers or a hazardous-materials Agreement. That exception still requires compliance with the regulations and UPS requirements. It does not approve every perfume product, air shipment or island destination, and it does not establish that your label provider supports the required declaration.
Ask for a decision on the exact finished product, packed quantities, destination and account. Compare accepted services only after that decision. Record the carrier’s handling conditions alongside the rate so a cheaper quote cannot silently substitute a different transport mode. Your customer-facing shipping menu should reflect the approved possibilities. If an address cannot use the fragrance service, resolve it before payment where possible instead of leaving the packing person to negotiate a route after the order arrives.
What does separating fragrance from ordinary stock cost?
AirPost’s US→US page retrieved on October 14, 2026 showed small-package USPS Ground Advantage from approximately $7.78, including the platform fee but excluding the sender’s agreed compensation. That is a starting reference for eligible ordinary goods, not a perfume quotation. AirPost’s shop copy excludes dangerous goods from home-sender stock. Use AirPost for shops only to assess a suitable nonhazardous assortment, such as confirmed eligible fragrance accessories.
Consider the shipping structure rather than pretending the restricted bottle has that price. If an eligible accessory parcel is separately quoted at $7.78, a fragrance-and-accessory split costs the approved fragrance shipment plus $7.78, the accessory sender’s compensation and materials. Two separately accepted accessory parcels at that same confirmed starting amount would contribute $15.56 before compensation and materials. These are conditional calculations, not claims about order volume or fragrance acceptance.
Keeping a mixed basket together with a specialist may be less expensive and easier for the customer. Splitting can make sense when your ordinary assortment already has its own dispatch arrangement, but disclose the separate deliveries and calculate replenishment too. For the broader location decision, see the US Shopify fulfillment comparison. Choose the product boundary first, then compare complete costs on both sides of it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you ship perfume with USPS Ground Advantage?
Yes, qualifying domestic perfume mailings can use surface Ground Advantage with the required contents limits, containment, declaration and marking. The USPS perfume FAQ gives a total limit of 16 fluid ounces per mailpiece.
Can I ship perfume with USPS Priority Mail?
Only when your ethanol-based mailing meets the conditions of prior written USPS air authorization. Routine surface permission does not authorize Priority Mail, and consumers returning the perfume need surface instructions.
How do I ship perfume samples with USPS?
Review each formula and container, count samples in the total liquid volume and include them in the protective packaging specification. A sample is subject to its contents classification even if it is free.
Can USPS ship perfume internationally?
USPS’s perfume FAQ prohibits perfume mailings to international and APO/FPO/DPO destinations. Do not offer those routes based on a domestic Ground Advantage label or a domestic air authorization.
Can an AirPost sender hold my alcohol-based perfume?
AirPost’s published shop rules exclude dangerous goods from stock placed with its home senders. A carrier’s conditional permission does not override that rule. Keep restricted fragrance with an appropriate separate operation.
