In short

  • For a US seller, Shippo Starter has no monthly plan charge and allows up to 30 labels, while its first Pro monthly tier is $19 for up to 200 labels. ShipStation currently lists Starter at $14.99 for 50 shipments and Standard at $29.99 for 50; compare required features and counted events before choosing the lower headline price.
  • Shippo’s advertised $17 monthly equivalent relates to annual billing: its help page identifies a $205 upfront payment for the first Pro tier.
  • ShipStation counts return labels, voided labels and certain external fulfillment actions. A count of paid customer orders can understate the capacity you need.
  • Check your account’s actual plan generation. Current ShipStation carrier-connection terms differ from the legacy charges described in some comparisons.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Your store needs shipping software, and both platforms show an affordable starting price. The difficult part is choosing the plan that covers your actual work rather than a neat count of orders. A corrected address can create another label; a customer return can use capacity without creating a sale. This comparison uses US app pricing opened on October 14, 2026. It does not compare API contracts or claim that either provider always supplies cheaper postage.

Which prices am I actually comparing?

Name the product, tier, allowance and payment term together. Shippo’s web app and its API are different commercial comparisons. ShipStation’s Starter and Standard differ in features even at the same shipment allowance. If you need your existing parcel-carrier account, a custom connection or a particular warehouse workflow, start with the tier that documents that need. Comparing the cheapest tier of one tool with an advanced tier of the other does not tell you the cost of equivalent work.

Save the quote presented to your account, including the billing term. Both services can change their offerings, and older accounts may follow different terms. If a trial displays a different user allowance or price from the public table, resolve that before inviting packers. Do not treat an aggregator’s comparison date as proof that every number on it matches your signup screen.

Does the $17 Shippo headline mean I pay monthly?

No. The Shippo subscription guide lists the first Pro tier at $19 monthly or $205 paid annually. Twelve monthly payments would total $228; $228 − $205 = $23 less under that annual example. The upfront amount matters as much as the saving. The same guide says annual payments are not refunded if you cancel before the year ends.

Annual billing is a commitment to a selected service, rather than a way to discover whether it suits you. Finish the package, printer and order-update tests first. Check what happens if your needs change during the term, including a move to another carrier, fewer sales or more people preparing orders. An attractive equivalent monthly figure can conceal cash you need for postage and stock replenishment now.

Shippo also documents a 30-day Pro trial and 30-day subscription cycles measured from the plan start, rather than a reset on the first of the month. Put the actual trial end and cycle start in your purchasing notes. Reconcile usage to those dates. A calendar-month order export can look safely below the allowance while the account’s own rolling billing period contains a different set of labels.

What happens when I cross a label allowance?

Shippo’s guide gives a concrete example: buying the 201st label on the $19 tier moves the account to the $29 tier for the next billing cycle. Its documentation says shipping continues when the allowance is exceeded. That is a change in the next plan bill, rather than evidence that each extra label costs the difference between the two tiers. Check the selected tier and next charge after a peak dispatch period.

ShipStation’s shipment-counting guidance says reaching the plan allowance requires an upgrade or waiting for the billing cycle to reset. Inspect capacity before a dispatch cutoff. Your checkout promise should not depend on discovering at the final label purchase that the account has no remaining allowance. Ask whoever controls billing to define how an upgrade is authorized when the packer reaches the limit.

Use the current account page as the source of truth for remaining capacity. A historical help page can describe a plan family that the public signup page no longer offers, so record both the stated counting behavior and your account-specific allowance. Avoid buying extra live labels just to test the boundary. Ask support to explain the event count and compare it with an existing shipment export instead.

Why does ShipStation count more than my store’s orders?

The same counting guide includes generated return labels, fulfillment requests and orders marked as shipped. Voiding a label or canceling a fulfillment request does not remove its event from the allowance. Reprinting the existing label is different: it does not add a shipment, whereas buying another label for the order does. These rules make the distinction between a print problem and a shipment change financially relevant.

Reconcile your usage by event type. Separate outbound label purchases, return labels, labels replaced after corrections and external fulfillment actions. Use the billing period’s start date as the filter. A canceled customer order may disappear from your sales report while its label remains in the software’s usage count. Keeping that record explains a plan upgrade without incorrectly describing the extra software capacity as more successful sales.

A print jam should lead to a controlled reprint of the existing purchased label, with the damaged copy removed. A different address or shipment specification may require a new purchase and the appropriate void process. Document that difference for whoever works at the printer. Read ShipStation’s void-label instructions for your carrier: refund eligibility and plan counting are separate questions, so recovering postage does not imply recovering capacity.

Will connecting my carrier contract create another fee?

The current ShipStation pricing page says no additional carrier-connection fee applies under its current terms, while noting that accounts registered before July 8, 2025, may incur legacy fees. It places existing parcel-account support in Standard and above. Check both facts together. A connection without an extra add-on charge can still require a higher subscription tier than the tool’s entry plan.

For Shippo, the app pricing page lists a 5-cent fee on Starter labels purchased through your own carrier account, with that charge waived on Pro and Premier. Do not apply the fee to every platform-provided label by assumption. Identify which rate source your packer selects and match it to the bill. If you keep a carrier contract, confirm its invoice recipient and any service restrictions separately from the software subscription.

Do not rely on a comparison claiming that an old ShipStation add-on is universal or that all Shippo shipments carry an identical per-label charge. Ask each provider to show a representative invoice for the exact plan offered to your account. The carrier-account comparison explains how to test whether a quotation actually uses the agreement you intend to retain.

How do software costs relate to outsourcing the packing?

Software subscriptions pay for a workflow. They do not pay someone to hold your inventory, pack the order or carry it to a service point. If you want to delegate those tasks, evaluate the physical arrangement separately. AirPost’s copy describes an agreed stock batch with a sender who prepares and drops off orders. Confirm a suitable US sender and their instructions before shipping stock; stock held with a sender is not insured.

AirPost’s US-to-US route page retrieved on October 14, 2026, displayed a small-package USPS Ground Advantage reference of approximately $7.78 and a FedEx Ground Economy reference of $8.22. Comparing those starting figures gives a $0.44 transport-reference difference. The platform fee is included in each display, so adding it again would overstate both totals. Add the sender’s agreed preparation compensation and materials to the applicable actual label quote.

This arithmetic does not rank Shippo or ShipStation rates, and it does not establish an integration with either one. It shows why a small carrier-price difference and a fixed software invoice belong on different lines. AirPost’s dollar figures are approximate conversions; its route page states that payment is in euros. For your own budget, compare actual subscription commitments with address-specific shipment totals and the separate labor agreement, rather than declaring a winner from a country-level starting price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shippo cheaper than ShipStation?

Shippo Starter has no monthly plan charge within its limit. Beyond that, compare the tier you need, billing term, counted events and equivalent live postage. Different allowances make the headline prices insufficient.

Is Shippo Pro $17 or $19 a month?

Its public page presents an annual monthly equivalent, while the help guide lists $19 monthly or $205 paid upfront for the first annual tier. Check the payment term on your signup screen.

Do voided ShipStation labels count toward my limit?

Yes, according to its shipment-counting guide. A postage refund does not remove that usage event. Reprinting an existing label does not add a new shipment.

Does ShipStation charge for my own carriers?

Current pricing says there is no additional connection fee, but existing parcel accounts require an eligible plan and pre-July 8, 2025 registrations may have legacy charges.

Does Shippo reset its limit on the first of the month?

Its subscription guide describes 30-day cycles from the plan start. Reconcile labels against your actual billing dates.
