Why does Shopify charge shipping on digital products?

Remove shipping from digital Shopify variants, deliver files through an app and test mixed baskets without losing the shipping charge on physical goods.

In short

  • Digital-only Shopify products should require 0 physical shipments: deactivate Physical product on the relevant product or variant. A basket containing a printed item still needs a suitable shipping option for that item.
  • Removing shipping and delivering a download are separate settings. Check both before selling a file.
  • Test a download alone, a physical product alone and a mixed basket; each should produce a different fulfilment outcome.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A British stationery shop adds a downloadable planner alongside its printed notebooks. A customer buying only the planner suddenly sees a delivery charge and wonders what will arrive by post. The immediate repair belongs in the product record. Making the whole shop’s delivery free would also change the price of posting its notebooks, while leaving the download delivery problem unresolved.

Start by opening the exact variant from the customer’s basket. A product name containing “PDF” does not tell the checkout whether shipping is required. Nor does a product photograph showing a screen. Record the variant, its shipping setting and the attached digital asset, then reproduce the basket. This gives you a specific configuration to repair rather than a general complaint about Shopify shipping.

Which setting removes shipping from a digital product?

Shopify’s digital-product instructions say to deactivate Physical product in the Shipping section, including on the relevant variant when variants exist. The bulk editor can change Requires shipping for several products or variants. These are product properties; editing a shipping-zone name does not replace them.

Review every purchasable version of the planner. If one option delivers a file and another delivers a printed booklet, they need different shipping treatment. Make the distinction obvious in the option names and order summary. A customer should be able to recognise what they bought without reading an internal SKU. Preserve the physical setting on anything that actually leaves your stock location.

Before a bulk change, select a small group whose delivery type you have checked. Review those records after saving. Avoid selecting a whole collection because it contains both digital and physical versions. The useful control is the version sold, not the merchandising category. If you use a bulk editor, keep a record of the variants changed so a later checkout result can be traced to that action.

Will removing shipping also send the download?

Shopify explains that delivering download links requires an app. Its Digital Products app supports uploaded files and links, with up to 50 files and a combined 5 GB per variant. Adding a file through the product page instead has a 500 MB limit per file. File capacity describes digital delivery, not a parcel’s weight.

Check that the asset attached to the purchased version is the correct edition. Open it through the same customer-facing route you plan to use. A draft file on your laptop is not evidence that the buyer can access the finished planner. Look at the order email, the wording on the download page and any permissions on linked content. These checks concern the product you are promising, rather than the presence of an installed app.

Keep the download instructions separate from the parcel instructions. A customer who bought a PDF needs to know where the file is and what to do if the link fails. A customer waiting for a notebook needs the delivery information for that notebook. Combining both into a single sentence such as “your order has shipped” makes support harder, especially when only one part of the purchase is ready.

What happens when the basket contains a file and a parcel?

The app documentation distinguishes digital items sent automatically after payment from products that require physical shipping. By default digital assets are sent automatically without an access limit. An access-limit change applies to past and future sales of the variant; a delivery-method change applies to orders paid after it is saved.

For the stationery shop, treat a PDF plus a notebook as a test of two promises. The download needs to reach the customer; the notebook needs to be packed and handed over. Decide who checks each result. If the same staff member handles both, keep two completion checks anyway. Otherwise an email showing that the download was delivered could be mistaken for evidence that the notebook has left the building.

A bundled asset attached to a physical variant deserves its own test. Do not infer its behaviour from a separate PDF-only product. Check when the file becomes available, what fulfilment action triggers the customer message and whether the printed component is still waiting. If a third-party bundle or download app is involved, verify its documentation and actual order output before adopting the workflow.

How do you repair the catalogue without breaking notebook orders?

  1. List the affected variants

Separate download-only versions, printed versions and physical versions with a bundled asset. Note the selected variant from the reported basket.

  2. Change only the digital shipping flag

Deactivate Physical product on the download-only variants and save. Leave the flag active where a printed product must be posted.

  3. Verify the digital asset

Check the attached file or supported link, its edition and its delivery method. Review the instructions that the customer actually receives.

  4. Repeat the four baskets

Use the matrix above with a UK delivery address where relevant. Inspect the shipping choice, confirmation and separate fulfilment tasks.

  5. Give support a clear answer

Explain which variants changed and how to handle an earlier affected purchase. Do not assume saving the new setting corrects the customer’s existing order.

During the test, keep the product version and basket contents visible in your notes. Testing a similarly named item can conceal a variant-specific mistake. Check desktop and mobile buying paths if both are used by your customers. Where the theme offers a quick-buy button, confirm it selects the intended version rather than a default printed variant that legitimately requires shipping.

If the digital-only basket still shows a shipping step, inspect the other items and any app-created lines. A bundle may contain a physical component, or a promotion may add an item you overlooked. Remove items one at a time in your test basket and note when the shipping requirement disappears. This is a diagnostic exercise; keep the real customer’s purchase intact while you establish the cause.

What should you budget for the physical part of a mixed order?

On 10 October 2026 the AirPost UK-to-UK route displayed Yodel InPost Economy Shop to Home at approximately £6.03 for the small format. One qualifying notebook parcel therefore has a displayed label subtotal of about £6.03; two separate qualifying parcels have a subtotal of about £12.06. The digital planner adds no physical label to this example.

The route price already includes the platform fee of €0.85 per parcel. The pound display is approximate and the page states that payment is in euros. Add the agreed sender remuneration, packaging and any stock-transfer cost separately. The example compares label counts; it does not establish the total fulfilment cost or a price you must charge your customer.

Check the closed notebook parcel against the selected service before using that reference. A thin notebook, several notebooks and a gift box are different packing jobs even if the catalogue sells them under one collection. The relevant shipment must fit its own service and format. A PDF takes no space in the parcel, but protective packaging and any physical extras do.

For the parcel part, AirPost’s seller page explains working with local senders. The Shopify fulfilment app guide covers connecting the store. Airpost Order Link’s published copy describes forwarding paid orders and returning tracking to Shopify; verify the output of a mixed order before relying on it for your catalogue.

What should you tell customers after an incorrect shipping charge?

Use the affected order to distinguish the charge from the delivery problem. Confirm what the customer bought and whether the file was delivered. If your store decides that the shipping charge was incorrect, explain how you will correct it through your normal order process. Do not tell the customer to place a second purchase merely to obtain the file they already paid for.

For a mixed purchase, explain the two outcomes in plain language: where to access the planner and what happens to the notebook. Tell support which confirmation belongs to each. Keep a record of the repaired variant and the repeat test so the same issue can be recognised if another version is added later. Catalogue maintenance is part of making the repair last.

Frequently asked questions

What should Shopify shipping rates for digital products be?

A download-only product should not require a physical shipment. Deactivate Physical product on its relevant variant, then test the basket and the separate delivery of the file.

Can I sell physical and digital products in the same Shopify store?

Yes. Give each version the appropriate shipping property and digital delivery method. Test a mixed basket so the printed item retains its shipping option while the download reaches the buyer.

Does a free shipping rate fix a digital product?

It can hide the charge while preserving an unnecessary shipping requirement. Correct the product property first; keep the physical products’ rates aligned with their actual delivery arrangements.

Why did the file arrive before the printed product?

The digital app’s automatic delivery can occur after payment while physical fulfilment remains separate. Explain these two stages in your customer messages and check the actual delivery setting for the purchased variant.

Can AirPost deliver the PDF for me?

The published Shopify-app copy describes parcel fulfilment and tracking. Configure digital access through the appropriate Shopify download app and verify mixed-order output separately.
