In short
- Shopify has no dedicated vacation switch: its official guidance offers 2 approaches, private mode for a short closure and Pause and Build for a longer pause. Check when the plan change takes effect; scheduling it does not necessarily stop orders today.
- A notice explains your absence, but you still need a working restriction if nobody can fulfil new orders.
- Audit existing orders separately from new checkout traffic, and review recurring apps before changing the plan.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You are ready to leave, but your store still says dispatch is available. Perhaps you have become ill and cannot pack tomorrow. The question is not simply which setting has the word pause in it. You need to decide whether visitors may browse, whether they may pay, and whether somebody can fulfil promises you have already made. Those decisions can require different actions. Start with the order deadline you can actually meet, then choose the Shopify restriction that fits it.
Do you need to hide the shop, or only prevent purchases?
In Shopify’s vacation guidance, private mode prevents visitors without the storefront password from viewing pages, products or completing orders. Subscription and other recurring charges continue. Pause and Build instead keeps the storefront accessible while disabling purchase features. Decide which experience your customer needs: a short explanation of closure, or continued access to product information while purchases are unavailable. Neither choice creates a packing replacement.
| What you need during the break | Approach to assess | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Stop ordinary storefront visits immediately | Private mode | Logged-out visitor sees the closure page |
| Keep product browsing during a longer pause | Pause and Build | Effective date and disabled checkout |
| Keep a limited range selling | Retain an active selling plan with real fulfilment cover | Each offered variant is available to its packer |
| Finish orders placed before closure | Separate fulfilment queue | Original promise, stock and responsible person |
| Leave the business permanently | Separate deactivation review | Financial obligations and remaining customer work |
If only one category needs your personal work, closing every product may be unnecessary. Equally, keeping everything open because a few ready-made items can ship creates a false promise for the rest. List variants that somebody can physically pick and pack. Put personalised items, unfinished sets and stock still at your home in another group. A general available quantity is not enough when the person covering you has the wrong size or colour.
Why can a scheduled pause still accept orders today?
Shopify’s pause-plan documentation says a change can be scheduled for the end of the current billing cycle. The admin can therefore display a future effective date while selling continues. Check that date before treating the task as finished. If you must stop storefront orders sooner, assess private mode as the interim restriction. Also inspect other channels separately during the interval rather than assuming a storefront access change covers every selling surface.
Write down three moments: your final workable dispatch cutoff, the moment you apply the immediate restriction, and the effective date displayed for the plan change. If the dates differ, give the gap an owner. That person checks whether anything has sold during the transition and whether it can still be shipped. Use the actual admin confirmation rather than the date on your holiday calendar. A scheduled change and a confirmed blocked checkout are different pieces of evidence.
Do the visitor check in a fresh session without a storefront password. Your own admin session is a poor way to judge what a customer sees. Open a bookmarked product URL, not only the homepage, and follow the route towards payment without creating an unwanted order. Record the result alongside the effective date. If the storefront remains open unexpectedly, review the setting and channel involved before changing unrelated parts of your theme.
Who can use Pause and Build, and what should you check first?
The official pause instructions require the store owner, an ended free trial and a paid plan; Shopify Plus is excluded. They also say draft-order invoices cannot be completed through checkout or the admin on this plan, and a new plan must be chosen to resume selling. These details were checked on 13 October 2026. If the option is missing, establish eligibility before looking for a vacation app. An app with a different purpose will not change your account’s plan eligibility.
Before making the change, identify integrations that create work outside the ordinary storefront. Ask whether there are subscription renewals, manual payment requests or externally managed orders to review. Check the relevant provider’s behaviour for your setup instead of treating a closed checkout as proof that every future obligation has disappeared. Keep a named person responsible for that list. Do not cancel a customer agreement simply because you no longer want new orders during the break.
Review apps individually. Keep the tools needed to finish customer work, and check billing for tools you no longer need. Removing an app can also remove a workflow you were relying on. Save the settings and export the information you need before uninstalling anything. Your objective is an understood list of recurring commitments, rather than an empty app list. The documentation’s reduced-plan option is not a promise that all third-party services stop billing.
What happens to orders that were already paid?
Sort the open queue by what physically happened. An unpicked order, a sealed parcel waiting at your home and a parcel handed to a carrier require different follow-up. A printed label does not establish that the parcel has entered transport. For each order, keep the promised dispatch information, actual stock location and next action together. Tell the responsible person what to do if an address change arrives before handover. Avoid sending two people the same packing instruction without a clear owner.
You can keep the old-order queue separate from the choice to accept new purchases. For example, private mode may stop ordinary visitors while an agreed packer finishes stock already allocated to paid orders. Confirm that they have the items and instructions first. The Shopify fulfilment setup guide explains the stock side. A holiday handover adds a deadline, a person who can decide exceptions, and a list of work that must remain unfinished until you authorise it.
If you cannot meet an existing promise, communicate through the proper order channel and keep the decision attached to the order. Do not replace the customer’s earlier agreement with the new notice intended for visitors. Make sure someone can see cancellations, complaints and return requests while you are away. Giving a person packing instructions does not automatically give them authority to refund payments or reject a complaint. Agree those roles explicitly before logging out.
Could a local packer keep part of the range open instead?
AirPost’s constants, checked on 13 October 2026, recommend €2.25 for packing a small parcel and set the platform fee at €0.85 per shipment. Using those two components, the handling portion is €3.10 for one small-parcel order. This excludes the carrier’s underlying transport price, stock transfer and materials; use the sender’s actual agreed fee when budgeting.
As an arithmetic example only, allocating 8 small-parcel orders to that arrangement gives €24.80 for those components. Eight is an illustrative batch, not a forecast of your sales. Compare that amount plus the missing costs with your own contribution from the products you can genuinely fulfil. Published AirPost label prices already contain the platform fee, so do not add it twice when substituting an actual label quote into your calculation.
The useful comparison is between an executable limited range and a full stop. It is not a claim that outsourcing saves every order you would otherwise lose. A suitable sender needs confirmed stock, packing materials and availability. If your goods need work only you can perform, the arrangement may cover nothing until that work is finished. Keep the order channel manageable and reconcile outgoing items with available stock. Read local fulfilment for your shop before promising this option to customers.
How do you reopen without creating a second backlog?
Start with the unfinished work, not an announcement. Reconcile stock that remains at the packing location and check items reserved for existing orders. Choose the appropriate selling plan if you used Pause and Build, then review the access restriction separately. One person should confirm the product promise, another can carry out the visitor journey if help is available. If you work alone, use a clean browser session and a written list so that your remembered setup does not substitute for a test.
Re-enable promotional traffic only when the offer is deliverable. Review scheduled campaigns, emails and abandoned-cart activity against the live experience. Keep a fallback restriction available if checkout works but the warehouse or packer is not ready. Restore normal dispatch wording only for confirmed available items. Reopening with a smaller honest range is easier to manage than reopening everything and discovering that your latest stock count belongs to the day you left.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have vacation mode?
It has no dedicated vacation setting. Assess private storefront access for a short closure or Pause and Build for a longer selling pause, then verify what a visitor can do.
Why can customers still order after I select Pause and Build?
Check the effective date in your admin. The change can be scheduled for the end of the current billing cycle; plan an immediate restriction separately if you cannot keep selling until then.
Can I keep my Shopify products visible during a break?
Pause and Build supports continued browsing while purchase features are disabled. Decide whether that is suitable for the duration of your break and the information your customers need.
Should I use a vacation app instead of changing plans?
First define the required behaviour and check the platform options. Review any app’s billing, channel coverage and reopening behaviour before depending on it.
Will a storefront pause finish existing orders for me?
No. Assign the open queue to someone with the stock and instructions, or resolve the order with the customer. Check refunds and returns independently of new checkout availability.
