In short
- Employee National Insurance normally stops when you reach State Pension age, but self-employed Class 4 stops from 6 April after that date. Retiring from your old job or taking a private pension does not establish either stopping date.
- Your employer still has its own National Insurance obligations after your employee deductions stop.
- Keep a final Class 4 bill separate from the money you earn after its exemption begins; the payment date can fall much later.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A new home-based activity can begin long after you left your main career. You might take a small payroll role, prepare orders for shops independently, or combine both. The sentence “pensioners do not pay National Insurance” is too short to organise those records. You need your State Pension age date, the type of earnings and the tax year to which they belong.
This is a guide to the change around State Pension age, checked against official sources on 19 October 2026. It does not calculate your individual tax bill. It gives a calendar you can use with payroll or your tax adviser, plus a parcel-fee example showing which records to keep. Your actual employment status must reflect the real arrangement.
Which retirement date belongs on your calendar?
Use the government State Pension age checker. It explains that the earliest date for State Pension can differ from the date you can take a workplace or personal pension. A leaving date supplied by an employer is another event again. Write each date beside its proper description rather than using one label, retirement, for all of them.
For someone who left employment at 60 and starts home work several years later, reaching State Pension age is still the relevant age event. Receiving a private pension earlier does not move it forward. Likewise, the date a pension payment appears in your bank is not a substitute for checking the statutory date. Keep the checker result or the official correspondence used to establish it.
What changes if your home work is on payroll?
HMRC tells employers to update payroll when an employee reaches State Pension age. Its operational guidance uses National Insurance category C so employee deductions stop, while employer contributions remain payable. That is a payroll change for the employer to make. Ask which pay statement will show the change and check the employee deductions rather than trying to edit the calculation yourself.
Provide the proof requested through the employer’s secure process. HMRC lists a passport or birth certificate, and existing age-exception certificates can also be used. The guidance says new CA4140 certificates are no longer issued. Keep a short record of the date you supplied the evidence and payroll’s response, particularly if you have recently joined an employer that has not seen your earlier records.
Why can Class 4 continue after that birthday?
The dedicated GOV.UK stopping page gives a different rule for self-employed Class 4: it stops from the start of the tax year after you reach State Pension age. Its example reaches that age on 6 September 2026, ends Class 4 from 6 April 2027 and pays the final bill by 31 January 2028. Those three dates describe one sequence, not contradictory rules.
The practical issue is the period being assessed. A bill paid after the exemption begins may relate to earlier self-employed profits. Do not assume it must be wrong because you are older on the payment date. Equally, do not apply a payroll stopping date to an independent activity. Put the relevant tax year beside each calculation before asking HMRC to review it.
| Event in the GOV.UK example | Date | What to put in your records |
|---|---|---|
| State Pension age reached | 6 September 2026 | Evidence of the statutory age date |
| Employee payroll treatment changes | On reaching State Pension age | Ask payroll to apply the employee rule |
| Class 4 exemption begins | 6 April 2027 | Separate the new tax year from 2026/27 |
| Final Class 4 payment deadline in the example | 31 January 2028 | Bill relates to the earlier liable tax year |
What if you have both a remote job and independent orders?
Make two earnings records. The first contains payslips and the payroll change. The second contains the independent activity’s fees, charges and costs by tax year. Do not describe an employer’s payroll update as proof that the second activity is exempt. If one organisation pays you in different capacities, ask for documentation identifying which payment belongs to which arrangement.
The general UK side-hustle National Insurance guide covers profit bands and low-profit questions. Here the distinction is timing around pension age. When you ask for help, bring both sets of records and the confirmed date. A question supported by the specific class, period and payment is easier to resolve than asking whether pensioners pay insurance.
Where do AirPost parcel fees fit into that record?
AirPost is a network through which shops arrange local order preparation with senders. You receive the shop’s stock, prepare accepted orders, print labels and take the parcels to a handover point. You set your fee per size and agree practical arrangements with the shop. The platform’s earnings example is a fee estimate, not an employee payslip or an HMRC calculation of taxable profit.
For illustration, use the shared small-parcel suggestion of €2.25. Constants retrieved on 19 October 2026 apply a 3% payout commission. Eight parcels a week in a four-week model means €72.00 of gross service fees and €69.84 after that commission. The benchmark stays in euros; no sterling exchange rate is assumed.
| Entry for this assumed four-week batch | Euro amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Gross parcel fees | €72.00 | Show what the service earned before charges |
| Payout commission | €2.16 | Identify the platform deduction separately |
| After-commission amount | €69.84 | Reconcile with the payout record |
| Tax and other costs | Not calculated here | Establish using your complete business records |
Keep the dates of work, statements and payments so your records explain what happened. If you hold a balance before withdrawing it, ask how your accounting method treats the amounts rather than selecting a tax year from the withdrawal date alone. Retain the euro documents and the conversion evidence used for your UK accounts. Do not translate a platform balance into sterling by memory.
Does stopping National Insurance also stop Income Tax?
No. GOV.UK distinguishes the National Insurance change from Income Tax on total income. A pension and new earnings can therefore still require a tax calculation. The same applies to administrative obligations: the stopping guidance says self-employed people still need Self Assessment returns for years they work. Follow the filing requirements applicable to your activity rather than assuming that an age exemption closes the record.
If your question is whether a very small new trade needs registration or a return, establish that separately under the rules for the activity. Keep evidence even while resolving it. The UK trading allowance explanation discusses that different question. National Insurance, Income Tax and benefit assessments use different rules; one result cannot safely stand in for the others.
How do you investigate a deduction that looks wrong?
- Identify whether the disputed amount is an employee deduction, an employer contribution or Class 4 on self-employed profits.
- Write down the verified State Pension age date and the tax year or pay period shown on the document.
- For payroll, ask the employer to check the category and evidence. For self-employment, compare the assessed year with the following-6-April rule.
- Use the official National Insurance refund checker if an overpayment remains; it asks which contribution class is involved.
- Keep the correction or HMRC response with the original statement so the difference can be reconciled later.
Do this before spending money earmarked for a final bill. A delayed payment deadline can make a liability feel remote even when it belongs to completed work. Keep that reserve distinct from the budget for current orders. If no liability arises on the actual profits, record that conclusion with its calculation rather than deleting the earlier estimate without explanation.
Frequently asked questions
Does National Insurance stop when I take early retirement?
Taking a private pension or leaving a job does not itself establish the age exemption. Check your actual State Pension age and the rules for the contribution class.
Can Class 4 be due after I reach State Pension age?
Yes. The exemption begins from 6 April after you reach that age, so the final liable tax year and its later payment deadline still matter.
Does my employer stop paying its contributions too?
HMRC says employer contributions remain payable even when the employee’s payroll category changes and employee deductions stop.
Is an AirPost payout my National Insurance profit figure?
It is a payment record after platform charges. Establish the taxable business result from your complete records and apply the correct tax-year and age rules.
Where do I check an NI refund?
GOV.UK provides a National Insurance refund checker. Have the relevant class, period and evidence available before using it.
