In short
- The UK £1,000 trading allowance is shared across an individual’s relevant trading and miscellaneous income for the tax year. Two platforms, clients or side hustles do not each give you another £1,000 allowance.
- Compare the combined gross income with the threshold before deducting expenses or a platform commission.
- If you elect to use partial relief across relevant trades, the total allowance cannot exceed £1,000 and you cannot also deduct those trades’ expenses.
- PAYE wages, selling personal belongings and property income need their own classification rather than automatically joining the trading total.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You pack parcels for a shop and also earn money tutoring, gardening or making items to sell. Each activity looks small in isolation. The tax question is whether the allowance follows the activity, the platform or you. It follows you, with the relevant income combined. This article focuses on that aggregation problem, using GOV.UK and HMRC guidance checked on 9 October 2026. For the basic allowance rules, see the existing UK side-income overview.
Why do two small activities share one allowance?
GOV.UK refers to annual gross trading income from one or more trades. HMRC’s Business Income Manual explains relief for an individual with relevant income from relevant trades and miscellaneous income, up to the trading allowance. Opening a second profile therefore does not reset the calculation. Neither does working for another shop, changing how customers pay you or splitting your invoices into smaller amounts.
Keep each activity identifiable because the underlying records and calculations still matter. Then bring the relevant totals together for the allowance test. A separate bank account can help organise records, but it is not an extra tax allowance. The useful distinction is between separate evidence for each source and the combined figure used to answer the threshold question.
How do you add parcel fees to another side hustle?
| Original annual example | Combined relevant gross income | Allowance test |
|---|---|---|
| £600 packing fees + £350 gardening receipts | £950 | Within £1,000, subject to eligibility and exceptions |
| £780 packing fees + £420 tutoring receipts | £1,200 | Over £1,000 even though each source is smaller |
| £550 from one shop + £650 from another | £1,200 | Two clients share the same allowance |
| £1,100 packing fees and no second activity | £1,100 | One source alone can exceed the threshold |
For the £1,200 tutoring-and-packing example, an eligible individual choosing the full available £1,000 partial-relief deduction has £200 left as taxable profit under that method. That is not £200 of tax. It is an income figure entering the next stage of the tax calculation. Your other income and the applicable tax rules determine the liability. The table deliberately stops before that separate calculation.
Should you use gross fees or the bank payout?
GOV.UK defines gross income for this purpose as the amount brought into the return before allowances or expenses. A platform payment can have a deduction before the money reaches your bank, so its deposit is not automatically the gross figure. Record the service fee, any separate charge and the money paid out. Reconcile the statement rather than assuming the bank balance contains every component of the calculation.
For AirPost packing, keep your fee records separate from the shop’s stock and the label the shop pays for. You provide preparation and handover services; you are not recording the retail sale of the shop’s product as your own sale. If a payment includes a repayment for supplies you bought, keep the receipt and agreement identifying that item. Ask about its correct treatment instead of silently adding or subtracting it from the gross fee.
Can you allocate the allowance between different trades?
HMRC’s multiple-trades partial-relief guidance allows the deduction to be distributed between relevant trades, with the total restricted to the trading allowance. It cannot create a loss in any trade. The same guidance says you cannot also deduct otherwise allowable expenses in calculating the profits of the relevant trades under that method. Allocating the allowance is therefore not permission to use a full allowance on one trade and ordinary costs on another relevant trade.
An original example makes the limit visible: assume relevant receipts of £900 for one activity and £700 for another. You could allocate £900 of allowance to the first and £100 to the second, leaving profits of nil and £600. Or allocate £300 and £700, leaving £600 and nil. The combined profit before any separately applicable loss rules remains £600. Neither allocation makes the total deduction larger than £1,000.
Do wages and selling old belongings join the same total?
Keep PAYE employment separate from trading receipts. A salary is not another relevant trade simply because it arrives in the same bank account. Equally, HMRC’s digital-platform guidance says selling personal items from your home is unlikely to create a tax liability, while buying or making goods to sell at a profit is likely to be trading. The reason for the transaction matters; the platform name alone cannot classify it.
If you clear unwanted possessions and also offer a paid packing service, label those transactions differently in your records. Do not count every incoming transfer as parcel income, and do not treat a paid service as selling your own belongings. Property income has a separate allowance and separate conditions. If your income mixes these categories, identify each source before attempting a combined trading figure. That avoids a spreadsheet that adds incompatible amounts simply because they are all “extra money”.
Could another activity make you ineligible for the allowance?
Check the connected-party exclusions before using the examples. GOV.UK identifies income from an employer or a spouse’s or civil partner’s employer, a company owned or controlled by you or a connected person, and certain connected partnerships. The trading allowance also does not apply to partnership trading income. A small amount is not enough to establish eligibility when the source itself raises an exclusion.
If you do paid work for the business that employs you, explain that relationship when asking HMRC about the allowance. Do not rename an employer’s payment as independent platform earnings merely to fit the threshold. Keep the agreement and identify the party paying for the service. The same care applies when a family business is involved: the relevant connection needs checking before treating a low total as fully relieved.
What records make the combined test easy to repeat?
- One entry for each service receipt, with the date, activity, client and gross amount.
- Separate columns for deductions and the amount paid into your bank.
- A reference to the invoice, payment statement or other evidence supporting the entry.
- A running total across the relevant activities for the same UK tax year.
- A separate list for transactions whose category or treatment needs checking.
Use that running total when a new statement arrives, rather than waiting until one platform reaches the threshold. The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. If a statement covers a different period, match it to the records for the relevant tax year instead of copying its headline annual total. HMRC’s platform-reporting guidance also explains that a report to HMRC does not automatically mean tax is owed. Reporting information and calculating your liability are different steps.
What should you do once the combined receipts exceed £1,000?
Follow the Self Assessment rules and check whether you need to register. The usual notification date is 5 October after the relevant tax year. On 9 October 2026, that date has already passed for a new filing obligation relating to 2025–26. If that is your position, use HMRC’s current deadlines page and act promptly instead of assuming the next October date covers the earlier year. Registration and payment dates are separate.
For the return, compare the allowance method with the normal calculation of allowable costs across the relevant activities. Save both workings before deciding which applies. Starting parcel preparation also needs a workable agreement with a shop: goods, instructions, fee and handover. The earn from home page and UK packing guide explain that activity. Its tax treatment follows your actual records, not a promised order count.
Frequently asked questions
Do two platforms give me two £1,000 trading allowances?
No. Combine the individual’s relevant income across platforms. A platform account does not create a separate allowance.
What if neither activity earns £1,000 on its own?
The combined figure still matters. In the original example, £780 plus £420 gives £1,200 and exceeds the threshold.
Can I deduct commissions before checking the threshold?
The test uses gross income before expenses and allowances. Keep gross fees, charges and the bank payout separately so the correct figure is visible.
Can I use the allowance for one relevant trade and expenses for another?
HMRC’s multiple-trades partial-relief method does not also allow expense deductions for the relevant trades. Compare the combined methods before electing partial relief.
Does the allowance also hide earnings from Universal Credit?
No. GOV.UK states that Universal Credit income is not affected by the trading allowance. Benefit reporting must be dealt with separately.
