In short
- For an eligible 2025/26 self-employment return, enter the trading income allowance in box 10.1 of SA103S or box 16.1 of SA103F. Report gross income separately and claim no more than £1,000 across your relevant activities.
- A payout after a platform deduction is a different figure from the service fees earned before that deduction.
- Choose the tax year and the appropriate return pages before copying any box number.
- Check the adjusted taxable profit, rather than assuming the allowance appears in the first net-profit box.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You have earned money packing orders at home and reached the tax return. The confusing part is often practical: where does the allowance go, and which amount belongs in the income field? This guide follows the official 2026 notes for the return covering 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026, checked on 12 October 2026. It does not describe an unpublished 2026/27 form.
Keep your fee statements beside the return. A screenshot of the current balance will rarely explain a whole year of transactions. The UK allowance overview covers the threshold itself; the task here is turning your records into a return that can be checked line by line.
Which return year and self-employment pages are you using?
The SA103S notes identify circumstances requiring the full pages, including turnover of £90,000 or more, adjusted for a full year where relevant, and several more complex situations. Low turnover alone does not settle every condition. Read the opening checklist before choosing the short version. The online return may present questions rather than the paper layout, so match the field description as well as the number.
Write the tax year at the top of your working sheet. Then mark each source document with the dates it covers. If a yearly platform statement and your bank download cover different periods, reconcile them before entering anything. A payment dated in the next tax year cannot be pulled into the earlier year merely because the order was prepared earlier; the relevant accounting method determines the treatment.
Create two columns labelled included and unresolved. Put unclear transactions in the second column with a short explanation. This is more useful than repeatedly changing the return while trying to remember why an amount moved. Resolve receipt timing from the actual payment arrangements and accounting basis, then retain that reasoning with the calculation.
Where do gross income and the allowance go?
| 2025/26 paper pages | Income entries | Allowance entry | Expense entries when allowance is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| SA103S: short | Box 9 turnover; box 10 other business income where applicable | Box 10.1 | Do not complete boxes 11–20 |
| SA103F: full | Box 15 turnover; box 16 other business income where applicable | Box 16.1 | Do not complete boxes 17–31 |
The full-page notes explicitly distinguish income from another trade: it belongs on separate self-employment pages. A separate activity is therefore not automatically another line in this packing service’s turnover. Keep a source-by-source total and a separate allowance-allocation calculation. Do not let the layout persuade you to combine income that should be identified independently.
Use the allowance field for the deduction, rather than reducing turnover before entering it. Your working sheet should show how the gross income leads to the final taxable result. If software already subtracts the allowance, subtracting it manually from income as well would apply the same relief twice. The preview should make that mistake visible.
How do you reconcile an AirPost fee with a smaller payout?
AirPost’s small-parcel reference fee is €2.25; its payout charge is 3%. Those constants were checked on 12 October 2026. For a hypothetical 40-parcel batch, reference service fees total €90.00, the payout deduction is €2.70, and the amount after that deduction is €87.30. These are euro reference amounts, not a promised UK fee or a sterling conversion.
The example contains three records: the fee total, the charge and the payout. Preserve all three. If you use the allowance, do not also put that charge into an expense field. If you choose ordinary expenses instead, examine the charge under that method. Your bank statement verifies the deposit, but does not turn the deposit into the full service-fee amount.
For a UK return, maintain sterling records using the appropriate treatment of any foreign-currency transactions. Do not compare the euro reference total directly with the £1,000 allowance. Use the currency and amounts on your real fee records, and keep any conversion evidence. A rounding difference is easier to explain when the original transaction and converted entry remain connected.
The earn from home page explains the work: a shop provides products and packaging, and you agree the service. The retail value of goods on your shelf is not the fee you earned. Give stock records and fee records different labels so an inventory total cannot accidentally become service turnover.
What should the final profit calculation look like?
Try a separate, hypothetical sterling tax worksheet: £1,800 eligible gross receipts minus a £1,000 allowance gives £800 before any further relevant adjustments. The £1,800 is an assumed annual receipt total for demonstrating the form, not an AirPost earning forecast. Copy neither amount into your return unless your own records support it.
On the short pages, the notes’ working sheet applies the allowance in the calculation leading to adjusted profit. An earlier net-profit entry can therefore differ from the final taxable-profit figure. Read the calculation through to its final line. A profit figure shown before the relief is applied does not, by itself, mean that the claim failed.
Check the numerical bridge yourself: starting income, allowance, any valid adjustments, final profit. Then compare that bridge with the software preview. If the taxable result is different, identify the extra line instead of overwriting the profit with your preferred answer. Previous losses and other adjustments can change the result; they require their own evidence and treatment.
What is worth checking before you press submit?
Name the year and activity
Confirm that the records cover the return year and identify the packing trade separately from wages and unrelated activities.
Trace the gross figure
Match earned fees, adjustments and payout deductions to the annual total. Record what remains unpaid or uncertain under your accounting basis.
Use the correct allowance field
Match the short or full-page label. Check your combined allocation across relevant activities before entering the amount.
Remove a duplicate deduction
Review expense and capital-allowance fields that conflict with using the allowance. Preserve receipts even when those fields remain blank.
Read the calculation and save it
Check the resulting taxable profit. Save the submitted return, its calculation, your reconciliation and the submission confirmation together.
Eligibility still comes before form entry. If an employer or connected business paid for your service, resolve the exclusion before using the allowance box. If you are comparing deductions, use the existing allowance versus expenses guide. Correct placement cannot make an ineligible claim valid.
Can you fix the return if you used the wrong amount?
GOV.UK allows corrections within 12 months of the Self Assessment deadline. Outside that window, its guidance directs you to write to HMRC. Identify whether the error concerns turnover, the allowance, an expense or more than one entry. A clear correction changes the affected fields and follows their effect through the calculation.
Keep the original and corrected worksheets. Add one sentence explaining the difference, such as a payout deduction previously netted against fees. Then compare the revised bill with the old bill and check any payment instructions. Do not delete the old evidence just because the new total is correct; the difference may be the first thing you need to explain later.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enter the trading allowance on a tax return?
For the 2025/26 paper pages, use SA103S box 10.1 or SA103F box 16.1 after checking eligibility. In software, look for the matching trading income allowance field and inspect the final calculation.
Do I enter income after deducting the allowance?
Enter the appropriate gross income and show the allowance separately. Reducing income first and also filling the allowance field can duplicate the deduction.
Can I claim the allowance and a platform payout charge?
Do not add an expense deduction when using the trading allowance for that income. The gross-fee and net-payout records remain useful for reconciling what actually happened.
Does a box number apply to every tax year?
No. This guide uses the official 2026 notes for 2025/26. Check the published notes and software for the year you are filing instead of assuming later forms are identical.
What if I have already submitted the wrong figure?
Use HMRC’s correction process and retain a calculation explaining the change. Check the amendment window and the revised bill rather than simply replacing your personal spreadsheet.
