In short

  • Self-employed parcel packing can fit alongside Carer’s Allowance in England and Wales, but your assessed earnings must be £204 or less a week after tax, National Insurance and allowable expenses. You must still meet the care requirement of at least 35 hours a week and the other eligibility conditions; being paid per parcel does not remove the earnings test.
  • Keep records of packing income, business costs and any other work rather than using the amount of one bank withdrawal as your complete earnings figure.
  • Uneven earnings can involve averaging: ask the Carer’s Allowance Unit which period and evidence it will use for your circumstances.
  • The AirPost euro example below is a calculator reference, not a sterling benefit calculation or a promise of British orders.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Caring often leaves irregular gaps rather than a neat spare working day. You may have time while another person provides support, then need to change everything for an appointment. Packing webshop orders at home can use some of that time, but accepting stock creates a practical responsibility. You need a way to finish orders and hand them over without leaving the person you support without suitable care. The benefit calculation is a separate part of deciding whether the work fits.

Does being self-employed change the Carer’s Allowance earnings limit?

GOV.UK includes earnings from both employment and self-employment in the calculation. The current eligibility page, checked on 10 October 2026, gives the weekly limit as £204 after the specified deductions. Do not replace that test with an annual tax allowance or a monthly figure from a work platform. This article concerns England and Wales. GOV.UK directs people living in Scotland to Carer Support Payment instead; you should check that scheme if it is the one you receive.

Start with all your work, not just the new packing activity. Existing employment or another business can matter to the earnings assessment. Tell the Unit what you already do and what the packing arrangement adds. A small separate payment may look harmless on its own while your combined position needs review. Keep the care arrangements in the same discussion: working from home is a location, whereas the required care is something you actually provide.

Which expenses can be deducted from self-employed packing income?

The eligibility guidance lists business costs for self-employed people among possible deductions, along with tax, National Insurance and 50% of pension contributions. It also gives conditions for deducting care costs while you work: up to 50% of earnings, with specified close relatives excluded as the paid carer. These are benefit rules to apply to your circumstances, not a general permission to subtract any household purchase. Ask about a cost if its business purpose or treatment is unclear.

For packing, keep the distinction between what the webshop supplies and what you genuinely pay yourself. AirPost’s copy says the shop supplies packaging and pays for the label. You cannot treat a shop-paid label as a personal outgoing just because you printed it. If you agree to buy material yourself, retain the receipt and the agreement about reimbursement. A record should explain both the expense and any money that came back to you.

How are uneven self-employed earnings assessed?

The official independent review of Carer’s Allowance overpayments explains that earnings can be averaged when they vary between pay periods. That does not tell you to choose whichever average makes your own packing income fit. Ask the Unit which period it needs and how it will deal with your records, particularly if the activity has only just started. A forecast, completed work and an amount available for withdrawal can describe different stages of the same arrangement.

Prepare a dated timeline rather than a single total. Show when the work began, which records exist and whether income is becoming more regular. If the first month is quiet, say so without presenting it as a guaranteed future level. If a shop later sends more work, keep that change visible. An adviser can work with a clear sequence; a statement that you earn “a little now and then” leaves both the amount and the assessment period uncertain.

Likewise, do not assume that waiting to withdraw money automatically prevents it being treated as earnings. Explain the platform balance and the payment process and ask how they are handled. Keep the supporting account information available. Your choice of withdrawal date does not itself answer a benefit question. A practical record should let the Unit understand the transaction without needing access to the webshop’s customer information or unrelated details of the person you care for.

What does the AirPost earnings example actually show?

AirPost describes a shop sending stock to you, with orders that you pack and take to a supported handover point. You agree your fee. Its copy contains a room-sized calculator setting of 50 small parcels a week at the recommended euro reference of €2.25 per parcel. With four calculation weeks, that gives €450.00 before the 3% withdrawal commission and €436.50 after it. Copy and calculation checked on 10 October 2026.

This is a worked calculator example, with the currency stated explicitly. It is not a quote for your UK packing fee and does not establish that the orders exist. The sterling earnings limit cannot be compared directly with that euro result. For your own assessment, provide the actual agreed remuneration, currency and payment records, and ask how any conversion should be documented. There is no assumed exchange rate here, because inventing one would give the benefit comparison false precision.

Even after putting the records into the correct currency, the calculator total still differs from assessed earnings. It covers the platform commission and does not calculate all personal business costs, tax, National Insurance or benefits. Nor is its four-week period automatically the period the Unit will use. Use the example to understand payment per completed parcel. Use your real accounts and the official assessment to decide what the work does to your household income.

What changes must you report when you start packing?

GOV.UK requires you to report changes if you receive or have applied for Carer’s Allowance. The listed examples include starting a job and changes to income. Tell the Unit about your proposed self-employed arrangement with enough detail to make it understandable: when it begins, how remuneration works and what records will be available. Reporting to the platform or mentioning the work in a tax return is not the same as telling the benefit authority.

  1. Describe the work before relying on it

Explain stock storage, packing, printing and handover, plus any other paid work. Give the planned start date and identify which parts of the income estimate remain uncertain.

  2. Ask about the assessment period

Find out which accounts and dates the Unit needs, how irregular earnings will be considered and how to present a platform balance or a payment in another currency.

  3. Keep the original evidence together

Retain order-payment records, withdrawal charges and receipts. A spreadsheet can point to them, but a typed summary should not replace the documents behind it.

  4. Report material changes through the benefit channel

If the work or income changes, use the reporting process and keep the acknowledgement. Review whether your dispatch commitments still fit the care you provide.

Could the decision affect the person you care for as well?

GOV.UK says Carer’s Allowance can affect benefits received by both you and the person you care for. In particular, it describes effects on severe disability additions and on Universal Credit. If several benefits support the household, ask for the whole position to be reviewed before treating packing income as a straightforward extra amount. The new work may be only one part of the calculation, and a decision about one payment can matter elsewhere.

Keep the operational proposal separate from that discussion. The webshop needs to know when you can prepare orders, which formats fit your space and how you will hand parcels over. It does not need your relative’s benefit letters. If travel is the difficult part, the guide to packing parcels without a car in the UK can help you examine the handover routine. Check it against your real caring arrangements, including what happens if a point is closed.

What makes a packing commitment realistic for a carer?

Test the handover as well as the table space. Another person may need to cover care while you leave, and a parcel point’s hours can be less flexible than packing at home. Agree a dispatch pattern you can actually maintain. AirPost’s copy lets you state capacity and availability and decline unsuitable requests. Make a clear arrangement for stock already in your home before taking on more. A quiet week does not prove that an urgent care change and a busy dispatch day will fit together.

You can read the AirPost sender explanation for the tasks and payment model. If an offer arrives elsewhere, use the checks for parcel-packing scams before sharing documents or accepting goods. For this particular decision, a viable start means three things agree: your real care, your real dispatch availability and the earnings assessment. None can be established solely by the attractive monthly number in a calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim Carer’s Allowance while self-employed?

Self-employment is included in the earnings rules. You must meet the weekly earnings test and the care and other eligibility conditions. Ask the Unit to assess your own work rather than relying on the label “side income”.

Are self-employed expenses deducted before the earnings limit?

The guidance allows specified deductions. Keep evidence and ask how each relevant cost is treated. A purchase for the household or a label paid by the shop is not automatically your deductible business cost.

Which accounts should a new parcel packer provide?

Ask which assessment period the Unit needs. Prepare dated remuneration, charges, expenses and other-work records, with original evidence available, even if a full trading year does not yet exist.

Can I spread a busy week across quieter weeks myself?

Do not choose your own benefit average. The official review describes averaging of variable earnings, but the period and treatment need to be established for your case.

Does the euro example prove I am below the £204 limit?

No. It is a four-week calculator example before personal costs and tax, in another currency. Your actual sterling assessment uses the agreed payments, relevant deductions and period determined for your circumstances.
