In short

  • You may qualify for Carer’s Credit if you are aged 16 or over, below State Pension age and care for one or more people for at least 20 hours a week. Income from small home-based jobs does not itself disqualify you: Carer’s Credit protects your National Insurance record and is not a cash payment.
  • Your income, savings and investments do not affect eligibility for this credit; other benefits have their own rules.
  • If the person you support does not receive a qualifying benefit, a signed Care Certificate may provide the evidence needed.
  • Check credits you already receive before applying or paying to fill a pension-record gap.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Small jobs can make your caring week financially easier without turning it into a conventional working week. You might have time to process a few orders at home while another person provides support, then need to stop for an appointment. The income question is only one part of the decision. If your work is limited or irregular, you also need to know what happens to your National Insurance record.

Carer’s Credit addresses that record. It does not pay for parcels, replace wages or reimburse care costs. This article covers the GOV.UK scheme and its application route, checked on 14 October 2026. For the practical tasks involved in earning from home with AirPost, assess stock handling and dispatch separately. Neither a platform profile nor a small payment tells you whether a particular tax year is already covered for pension purposes.

What is Carer’s Credit actually worth to you?

The GOV.UK overview explains that Carer’s Credit helps fill gaps in your National Insurance record. The what you get page connects those credits to qualifying for the State Pension. Think of it as recognition in a record, rather than money arriving in your bank account. A credit therefore belongs in your pension checks, not in the income line of your weekly household budget.

Do not assume a credit produces a fixed increase in your eventual pension. Your existing record and personal pension position matter. An extra payment from a webshop and a credit for care are not two interchangeable forms of earnings. One pays for work; the other may help protect a year that would otherwise have a gap. Keeping that distinction clear prevents you from treating a pension safeguard as available spending money.

Start by checking what is already recorded. A period of limited work can still be covered by contributions or credits from another source. Equally, doing some paid work does not prove that every relevant week or year is complete. Your own record gives you the starting point. This matters particularly when you move between a regular job, unpaid care and small self-employed assignments during the same tax year.

Does side income create an earnings limit for this credit?

GOV.UK states that your income, savings and investments do not affect Carer’s Credit eligibility. You do not need to squeeze a home-based job below a Carer’s Allowance earnings ceiling just to meet this credit’s income rule. That does not remove the care test, the age conditions or any rules applying to other support you receive. Check the scheme name on each letter before using an earnings figure from another benefit.

Carer’s Allowance is a separate cash benefit. The existing article on Carer’s Allowance and self-employed packing explains that different assessment. Carer’s Credit is not an alternative label for the same payment. You may need to consider a credit when a cash benefit is unavailable, but you should first check whether your circumstances already provide National Insurance credits through another route.

A platform statement also does not decide whether your work income is taxable or how another benefit assesses it. Keep income and business-cost records for the work itself. Then handle the care-credit application with its own evidence. This gives you a clearer explanation if an adviser asks why you have earnings on a tax record while also applying for recognition of caring time.

Can care for more than one person reach the 20-hour test?

The eligibility page refers to caring for one or more people for at least 20 hours a week. HMRC’s National Insurance manual also describes a total care-hours test. You do not necessarily have to provide the whole amount for a single person. Record the people you support and the care you actually provide, rather than using the time you merely spend at home.

Your situationWhat to checkUseful evidence or next action
Care for one person above the weekly care requirementAge conditions and qualifying-benefit evidenceTheir benefit information and your care details
Care for several peopleYour total care and the evidence for each personSeparate care details so the total can be explained
Care recipient has no listed qualifying benefitWhether a Care Certificate can support the applicationAsk an appropriate health or social care professional
Already receiving a benefit that gives creditsWhether the relevant weeks are already coveredCheck your award and National Insurance record
Only a short period of unpaid careWhether the hours and other conditions are met for that periodDates, care details and the claim deadline
The checks concern care-credit eligibility; they do not establish permission to accept a particular job.

The care evidence should describe real support. If your proposed packing time depends on someone else covering care, make that arrangement explicit in your work plan. Do not create a care-hours total by counting every minute of being on the same premises. A work window and a care window can be nearby in the day without being the same activity.

What if the person you care for has no qualifying benefit?

The eligibility guidance gives another evidence route: complete the Care Certificate section of the application and ask a health or social care professional to sign it. The absence of a qualifying-benefit award does not therefore mean you should immediately abandon the enquiry. The certificate supports the care assessment; it is not a form that an online shop or a parcel platform can validate for you.

Before seeking a signature, gather the information the form asks for. Check names, dates and what care is being described. Send personal care information through the official application route. A webshop needs your available processing and dispatch days, rather than a copy of a relative’s health evidence. You can keep the administrative questions and the commercial work agreement separate without losing clarity in either.

Keep a copy of what you submit and any decision received. If your care changes, you will have a useful starting point for explaining the change. GOV.UK says breaks of up to 12 consecutive weeks can still be covered, and you should update the Carer’s Allowance Unit for a longer break. That is a scheme rule about care; it is not a promise that an outstanding webshop order can remain unfinished for the same period.

When should you apply, and when is a new claim unnecessary?

HMRC’s manual gives the normal application deadline as before the end of the tax year following the year for which the credit is claimed. A date example follows from that rule: for care in the 2026–27 tax year, the normal deadline falls at the end of 2027–28, on 5 April 2028. Do not confuse this with a Self Assessment filing deadline. The manual allows further time considered reasonable in the circumstances, but you should not plan to rely on that exception.

The claim guidance says you do not need to apply if you get Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment, because credits are automatic. It also covers Child Benefit for a child under 12 and points foster carers towards another credits route. Check which weeks your existing award covers. Having received a benefit at some point does not by itself explain your whole working and caring history.

If you do need the application, download the official form and complete the relevant evidence. The claim page provides the current return instructions. Keep confirmation of what you sent and when. Where the record or decision remains unclear, ask the responsible office before making a financial choice about filling gaps yourself. An assumption that a low-income year must require voluntary payments can be costly if credits were available.

How do you compare parcel income without turning it into a pension figure?

For scale, the AirPost euro calculator uses a suggested small-parcel fee of €2.25. If you complete 5 small parcels per week at that fee, its 4-week calculation gives €45.00 before the 3% payout fee and €43.65 afterwards. Constants checked on 14 October 2026. This is a conditional euro illustration, not a sterling payout quote or an order forecast.

Use your actual agreed currency and records for your British income. The calculator result is before your own costs and personal tax. You set your fee, and the shop pays the label and provides packaging materials under the AirPost product description. None of these amounts measures a Carer’s Credit award or a pension increase. Assess whether the work is manageable, then keep its earnings separate from your pension-record check.

GOV.UK lets you check your National Insurance record and check your State Pension forecast. Use those services together when deciding whether anything is missing and whether filling it would improve your position. For care-related gaps, establish available credits before paying. For your shop collaboration, offer only the work window that remains after the care arrangements are reliable.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does Carer’s Credit pay?

It is a National Insurance credit, not a cash payment. Its purpose is to help with gaps in the record used for the State Pension.

Can I claim Carer’s Credit while working from home?

Income does not itself affect eligibility. You still need to meet the care and age conditions and check whether credits already arise through another award.

Can a Care Certificate help if my relative gets no disability benefit?

The official guidance provides this evidence route. Complete the relevant section and ask a health or social care professional to sign it; the decision remains with the responsible office.

How do I claim Carer’s Credit for my pension?

Check existing credits first, then use the official application form if needed. Keep care evidence and dates, and observe the deadline for the tax year concerned.

Does a break in caring always stop the credit immediately?

The guidance allows certain breaks of up to 12 consecutive weeks. Report a longer break and ask how the rules apply to your dates and circumstances.
