In short
- In Italy a pickup point saved €1.48 per small parcel with Poste Italiane on 29 September 2026: €5.24 to a Punto Poste against €6.72 to the door. The cheapest service overall was an InPost locker at €4.46, but only for flat parcels up to 8.8 cm high.
- UPS and DHL only had home delivery on our rate card, at €9.94 and €14.89 for a small parcel, but in 2 working days instead of Poste Italiane’s 3.
- Italians still expect the door more often than Poles or Czechs do, so offer both and make the point the cheaper choice rather than the only one.
- An InPost locker parcel waits about 3 days and cannot be extended; a Poste Italiane parcel at a point waits 7 days. After that it goes back to the sender.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
Italy sits between the point countries and the door countries. Home delivery is still what many customers assume, while lockers and pickup points at tobacconists and bars keep spreading. For a shop that means the choice is less about habit and more about the parcel: its size, its value and how quickly it has to arrive.
This article compares what point and door cost per carrier, with prices we measured ourselves, and what happens when either goes wrong. It is the Italian part of pickup point vs home delivery in Europe.
How much cheaper is a pickup point in Italy?
The prices below come from our shipping options for parcels sent inside Italy, measured on 29 September 2026. They include our flat €0.85 platform fee, which is the same for every service, so the differences are the carriers’.
| Carrier and service | Point or locker | Home delivery | Listed delivery time |
|---|---|---|---|
| InPost Locker to Locker | €4.46 (max 35 × 25 × 8.8 cm) | No home service | Within 2 working days |
| Poste Italiane Shop2Shop / Shop2Home | €5.24 | €6.72 | Within 3 working days |
| UPS Standard | No point service | €9.94 | Within 2 working days |
| DHL Domestico Espresso | No point service | €14.89 | Within 2 working days |
| Carrier and service | Point or locker | Home delivery | Listed delivery time |
|---|---|---|---|
| InPost Locker to Locker | €4.46 (max 45 × 35 × 8.8 cm) | No home service | Within 2 working days |
| Poste Italiane Shop2Shop / Shop2Home | €8.86 | €9.33 | Within 3 working days |
| UPS Standard | No point service | €10.84 | Within 2 working days |
| DHL Domestico Espresso | No point service | €16.77 | Within 2 working days |
Only Poste Italiane offers the same service to a point and to the door, so it is the only clean comparison: €1.48 cheaper to a point for a small parcel, €0.47 for a medium one. The rest of the table is a choice between networks rather than between point and door.
The InPost price has a catch that the headline hides. Its locker compartments take parcels no higher than 8.8 cm, for both sizes. Clothing in a mailer bag, a book or a phone case fits; a shoebox does not. For anything thicker, the cheapest point in Italy is Poste Italiane at €5.24.
TNT is also on our rate card for Italy, but at a price far above the others for the same parcel; it is not a candidate for a default. Without our fee, the cheapest domestic 2 kg carrier rate in Italy was €3.49 on the European shipping rates index of 26 September 2026.
Punto Poste, InPost locker or courier: what do Italian customers use?
| Network | What the customer collects from | On AirPost in Italy |
|---|---|---|
| Poste Italiane | Post offices and Punto Poste: more than 18,000 tobacconists, bars, stationers, newsagents and supermarkets | Point and door, small and medium; door for large |
| InPost | About 5,000 lockers in Italy, plus InPost points | Locker to locker, flat parcels only |
| UPS | Door delivery on our rate card | Door, all sizes; courier pickup for large parcels |
| DHL | Door delivery on our rate card | Door, all sizes; courier pickup from the sender |
The Punto Poste network is what makes the point workable in Italy beyond the post office: the customer collects at a shop they already visit. InPost’s lockers have no opening hours at all, which suits customers who work late, but there are far fewer of them.
Many Italian customers still expect the door, especially for heavier and more expensive goods. That is why we would not make the point the only option in Italy, as you reasonably can in the Czech Republic.
What should a foreign shop set as the default in Italy?
- Flat, light items: InPost locker. At €4.46 it was the cheapest service in Italy, for both sizes, as long as the parcel is no higher than 8.8 cm.
- Other small parcels: Poste Italiane to a Punto Poste, with Poste to the door as the paid option at checkout. The €1.48 difference is small enough to pass on to the customer who wants the door.
- Medium parcels: Poste Italiane to the door. The point saved only €0.47, not worth an extra errand for your customer.
- When speed matters: UPS to the door. For a medium parcel it cost €1.51 more than Poste to the door and listed 2 working days instead of 3.
- Large parcels: Poste Italiane Home2Home, at €12.64 roughly a third of the UPS and DHL price, if 4 working days is acceptable.
What happens when an Italian parcel is not collected or not delivered?
| Situation | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| InPost locker | The customer has about 3 days from the notification; the period is fixed and cannot be extended. Then the parcel returns to the sender automatically. | InPost Italia |
| Poste Italiane at a Punto Poste, post office or locker | 7 days to collect, within the opening hours of the point. | Poste Italiane, FAQ Scegli Tu |
| Poste Italiane at the door, nobody home | A second attempt the next day; after two failed attempts the parcel goes into giacenza at the nearest post office. | Poste Italiane, FAQ Scegli Tu |
| Poste Italiane in giacenza | Held for 10 working days (Saturday included), then returned to the sender. | Poste Italiane, FAQ shipping and delivery |
The contrast is sharp. A Poste Italiane parcel that misses the customer at home still has more than two weeks to reach them: a second attempt, then 10 working days at the post office. An InPost locker parcel has about 3 days and no extension. For the locker, that short window is the price of being the cheapest.
An uncollected parcel goes back to the sender. With local stock that is your AirPost sender, who is the sender on the label, so the item returns to your stock in Italy. You have still paid for a label that delivered nothing. Put the collection window in your shipping confirmation, especially for locker parcels.
Expensive items: the door, with Poste or UPS
For an item where one returned parcel costs more than the saving on dozens of labels, the door is the safer default in Italy. Poste Italiane’s door gives the customer two attempts and a long giacenza; UPS gives speed.
