In short
- Hold one batch of stock with a verified sender in Italy and every order becomes an Italian domestic parcel: €3.49 for 2 kg, against €13.55 from the Netherlands and €11.05 from Germany (carrier rates measured on 26 September 2026). Add about €3.10 for packing and the platform, and the domestic route is still roughly half the cross-border label.
- Italian customers can pick an InPost locker or a Poste Italiane point instead of the door, and the point service is the cheaper one.
- Domestic services list delivery within 2 to 3 working days; a cross-border parcel adds the border leg on top.
- From the UK every parcel is an import: VAT, a handling fee and, since 1 July 2026, €3 customs duty per product type. From an EU shop there is no customs, but stock in Italy means an Italian VAT registration.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
Italy is a large e-commerce market with a shipping problem for foreign shops: the cross-border label is expensive, and the customer compares your delivery to shops that ship from inside Italy. This article is for European and British online shops that want to sell to Italian customers without renting a warehouse there. It sets out the two routes, what each costs per parcel, which carriers and pickup options exist, and what you need to sort out for VAT and customs.
What a 2 kg parcel to an Italian customer costs
The numbers below are carrier rates without any AirPost fee, taken from the European shipping rates index and measured on 26 September 2026. They are the cheapest service found for that route and weight.
| Route | Carrier rate, 2 kg | Fulfilment | Per order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-border from the Netherlands | €13.55 | Your own time | €13.55 + your time |
| Cross-border from Germany | €11.05 | Your own time | €11.05 + your time |
| Domestic from stock in Italy | €3.49 | ± €3.10 | ± €6.59 |
The domestic rate barely moves with weight: €3.61 at 5 kg and €3.61 at 10 kg on the same index. That is the other half of the argument. A heavier order to Italy gets more expensive across the border, while from local stock it costs almost the same.
What the table leaves out is the bulk shipment that fills the stock. You send one box or pallet to your sender, and that cost is spread over every unit in it. At fifty units it is usually well under a euro per order. The general sum for other countries is in how to ship domestically in Europe without a warehouse.
The domestic route only exists where a domestic service is available to your sender. The list is read from the live rate card and is, today:

Pickup point, locker or home delivery in Italy
Your sender can offer two kinds of delivery in Italy. The first is a pickup at a point or locker: an InPost locker, or a Poste Italiane point with the Shop2Shop service. The second is home delivery, for example Poste Italiane Shop2Home or UPS.
On the services available to senders in Italy, the point service is cheaper than the home service of the same carrier, and a locker cannot miss the customer. Home delivery is what customers expect for heavier or bulkier orders. A sensible default is to offer the locker or point first and home delivery as the choice at checkout.
A cross-border label usually gives you home delivery and a limited point network. That is the practical difference: a parcel that starts in Italy can use the Italian point and locker networks in full. The trade-off per country is set out in pickup point vs home delivery in Europe.
Which Italian carriers your sender can use
- InPost: locker-to-locker for small and medium parcels. The cheapest option on the list, and the one that fits a small parcel best.
- Poste Italiane: Shop2Shop to a point, Shop2Home to the door, and Home2Home for large parcels up to 30 kg.
- UPS: home delivery, including via Access Point.
- DHL and TNT: express and business services, priced for business shipping. Rarely worth it for a small consumer parcel.
Current services and prices per size are on the shipping options page. Which of them your sender offers depends on what they have ticked in their profile, so check that before you send stock.
Delivery time
The domestic services on the shipping options page list delivery within 2 working days for InPost and UPS, and within 3 working days for Poste Italiane. Those are the carriers’ own indications, not a guarantee.
A cross-border parcel travels the same last mile in Italy, plus the leg from your country to the Italian network. From the UK a customs step comes on top. The domestic route removes both, which is why it matters more for delivery time than it looks on the map.
Returns from Italian customers
You choose the address for customer returns. If you agree it with your sender in the chat, returns go back to them as a domestic parcel, and the item goes back into stock in Italy instead of travelling back across a border. A failed delivery follows the return route of the service your sender used, which ends at the sender’s address.
What happens with a returned item, check it, put it back on the shelf or send it on to you, is something you agree with your sender. Put it in writing in the chat before the first order.
VAT and customs
If your shop is in the EU
Cross-border sales to consumers in other EU countries have a threshold of €10,000 a year, across all EU countries together. Below it, you usually charge your own country’s VAT. Above it, you charge Italian VAT on Italian orders and can declare it through the One-Stop Shop (OSS) instead of registering in Italy.
Stock held in Italy is a different case. Moving your own goods there and selling from that stock makes the sales Italian domestic supplies. That generally means an Italian VAT registration from the first sale, with no threshold, and OSS does not cover it. Check with your accountant before the batch moves. The detail is in VAT when you store stock in another EU country.
If your shop is in the UK
Every parcel from the UK to Italy is an import. The customer pays Italian VAT, either at checkout through IOSS or at the door, often with a carrier handling fee. A British business that wants to use IOSS must appoint an intermediary to register for it. Since 1 July 2026 there is also customs duty of €3 per product type in the parcel. A two-product order carries €6 of duty. The full sum is in the €3 EU customs duty explained.
With stock in Italy, you import once. The bulk shipment goes through customs as one commercial import, with you as the importer, and the orders after it are domestic parcels. You then usually need an Italian VAT registration or a fiscal representative. AirPost does not arrange either; a customs broker or the Agenzia delle Entrate does.
How this works with AirPost
Create an account
It takes about 20 seconds with just your email address. No intake call, no contract, no minimum.
Find a sender in Italy
On /en/senders. Every sender’s identity and payout account are checked before they get stock or orders. Look at their parcel sizes, the carriers they use and their reviews.
Send a test batch
Your products and your own packaging, about a month of Italian orders of one product. Your other stock stays with you.
Send the orders
In the chat, with the address and the size, to one sender or to all your senders at once. Whoever responds first ships it, and they only see the address once they take the order. With Shopify, the Airpost Order Link app routes paid orders automatically and sends the tracking code back to your store.
Your sender packs and drops off
They buy the label, pack the order and take it to a point. You pay from your balance. If a parcel is lost or broken in transit, AirPost files the claim with the carrier and passes the awarded amount on in full.
Compare after a month
Cost per order, delivery time, support questions and returns. If it does not work, ask for your stock back and it is returned within 14 days.
Stock at a sender is not insured
Verification and your own stock records lower the risk; they do not insure the goods. Make the first batch small enough that you could afford to lose it, and ask your insurer about cover for stock at another location.

Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to ship a 2 kg parcel to Italy?
On 26 September 2026 the cheapest carrier rate for 2 kg was €13.55 from the Netherlands, €11.05 from Germany and €3.49 inside Italy. From stock in Italy you add the sender’s fee and the platform fee.
Can I ship domestic parcels in Italy without a warehouse?
Yes. A verified individual in Italy holds a batch of your stock at home and posts each order as an Italian domestic parcel. There is no building, so no storage fee and no minimum volume.
Which carriers deliver domestic parcels in Italy?
Senders in Italy can use InPost lockers, Poste Italiane points and home delivery, UPS, DHL and TNT. InPost and Poste Italiane are the ones that fit small consumer parcels.
Do I need an Italian VAT number?
If you hold stock in Italy, usually yes, from the first sale. If you only ship across the border from another EU country, you charge Italian VAT above the €10,000 EU threshold and can declare it through OSS.
What does a parcel from the UK to Italy cost in customs?
Italian VAT, often a carrier handling fee and, since 1 July 2026, €3 customs duty per product type. A bulk shipment into Italian stock is one customs event; the parcels after it are domestic.
